Turkey’s illegal gambling operators pose as labor unions, political parties
Plans to build a casino as part of a new tourist complex in Turkey are raising objections from nature lovers.
The Dogan News Agency reported that the Kaş municipality in Antalya province plans to launch a tender on Thursday for a redevelopment of the İnceboğaz Beach area. The tender conditions include covering the 65k-square-meter beach with slate, the construction of a 50-ton water tank and, yes, a casino.
This is curious for any number of reasons, most specifically because Turkey banned casinos in 1998. There are a few small-scale operations on the Turkish-controlled northern half of Cyprus, but no casinos within Turkey itself. At least, no legal ones.
Which brings us to those indefatigable Turkish gambling operators who continue to find new ways to frustrate the authorities. On Tuesday, police in the southern city of Adana raided a building on a tip that unlawful bingo games were going on inside. The raids resulted in 89 individuals fined for illegal gambling while 12 organizers were arrested for hosting gambling.

Mixed reaction to Thai casino proposal
A proposal to legalize casinos in Thailand has met with a mixed response from the country’s power brokers.
Earlier this week, a dozen members of the country’s National Reform Council (NRC) proposed authorizing casinos in tourist areas like Pattaya and Phuket to keep Thai citizens from having to cross the border into Cambodia to gamble. The pro-casino group – whose membership has reportedly grown to 25 – also stressed the tax revenue potential of a legal casino market.
The proposal has met with the approval of national police chief Somyot Pumpunmuang, who plans to launch a website to gauge public sentiment on the casino issue. Somyot also suggested a national referendum might not be a bad idea.
Somyot told reporters that he supports the idea of allowing local residents to access the casinos, provided they can demonstrate “strong finances.” However, Somyot suggested that only gamblers from outside the region in which a particular casino is based should be allowed entry. Somyot would also like to see every casino patron photographed and included in a central database of gamblers.

DraftKings applies for UK gambling license
Daily fantasy sports (DFS) operator DraftKings has applied for UK gambling licenses.
As initially spotted by Twitter user @Bigo1_, the website of the UK Gambling Commission (UKGC) currently shows DraftKings’ applications for both ‘gambling software’ and ‘pool betting’ licenses as “in progress.” There is no timeline for when said applications might be processed.
While DraftKings is known to be pinning a lot of its hopes on international expansion, the UK seems an odd place to start. The popularity of DFS in the US is largely considered to be the result of a lack of legal sports betting options, whereas the UK is probably the most competitive online sports betting market on the planet. The current reliance of most DFS operators on the National Football League also gives one pause when considering DFS’ potential in the UK, where the NFL’s following consists largely of American ex-pats.
The application for licenses explicitly containing the word ‘gambling’ also flies in the face of DFS proponents’ longtime fudge that DFS isn’t gambling, per se. At the very least, it will encourage US politicians to consider formally regulating the DFS sector, and no doubt some ambitious US Attorney is itching to launch a Black Friday-style takedown of DFS sites as we speak.
Billionaire who shaped Las Vegas led life behind scenes
His business magic of buying and selling land, selling buildings and buying up others largely played out behind the scenes and shaped the Las Vegas skyline at the same time he was buying and selling the MGM movie studio – twice – and itching to take over automaker Chrysler. Ultimately, the eighth-grade dropout turned boxer who started a small charter airline ferrying travelers to and from Las Vegas built the first modern mega-resort in 1969 and then another and another , each time the world’s largest hotel.
UK advertising watchdog spanks William Hill, Betway
The UK’s advertising watchdog has spanked online operator William Hill and Betway for contravening gambling ad guidelines.
The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) received a complaint regarding three promos issued via Hills’ @WillHillBet Twitter account. One promo featured a child jumping in the air holding a golf club and ball, with the accompanying text “#TheMasters has started! #yippee”.
The two other ads were promoting prop wagers on the gender of the latest royal baby and featured images of two teddy bears wearing crowns riding around on the back of a truck. The accompanying text read “Seen our teddy bears around London today?” while offering a free bet on the Grand National to anyone who took a photo of the bears and tweeted it.
The complainant felt the ads were “likely to be of particular appeal to children” and the ASA determined that the ads violated the rules prohibiting the use of children or young people in gambling marketing. Hills copped to the fact that the images weren’t acceptable and said it had taken steps to ensure there would be no repeat performance.
Amaya Gets Infusion with $280M from PointState Capital Hedge Fund
Amaya is still the “it” girl of business investments, it appears. At least if a major buy in from a multibillion hedge fund is any indication, that is. PointState Capital, a US hedge fund that manages a portfolio of investments worth $14.2 billion, has just bought a stake in Amaya, the owner of Rational Group, […]

Betfair enjoys across the board double-digit gains in fiscal 2015
UK-listed online gambling operator Betfair saw double-digit gains across the board in its fiscal 2015 results.
On Wednesday, Betfair turned in its preliminary results covering the 12 months ending April 30, which showed revenue up 21% to £476.5m, earnings up 32% to £120.2m and operating profit up 53% to £94.3m.
Betfair says the earnings figure would have risen 53% but for the UK’s new 15% online point-of-consumption tax (POCT), which didn’t kick in until Dec. 1 but still took a £19.2m bite out of 2015’s numbers. Betfair warned that it would have taken a £47m hit had the POCT and the new Irish online betting tax been in place the whole year.
Betfair CEO Breon Corcoran (pictured) called fiscal 2015 an “excellent” year for the company. Corcoran said the excitement surrounding last summer’s FIFA World Cup had allowed Betfair to “engage with many new customers and gain trading momentum” that has continued through the rest of the year.
