Don’t Trust the Rumors of an MGM Wynn Merger

“A lot of times when I was positioned short, meaning I needed [the market] down, I would create a level of activity beforehand that could drive the futures. It doesn’t take much money. Or if I were long and I wanted to make things a little bit rosy, I would go in and take a bunch of stocks, make sure that they’re higher, maybe commit $5M in capital to do it and I could affect it… No one else would ever admit that, but I don’t care…You aren’t allowed to foment, but you can do it anyway because the SEC doesn’t understand it. You can call a bozo reporter and tell him that a competitor is going to come out with a great product, and that can keep the stock down as well…”

Jim Cramer, Founder and Chairman of TheStreet

On June 4, rumors started spreading about a possible merger between Wynn and MGM. Wynn’s stock jumped from $102 to $109 that day, or 7%. Guess what? We’re back down to $102 again. MGM also jumped on the reported rumors. But now the stock is down below pre rumor level. I guess the rumor mill died down.

The really interesting thing about this particular rumor, however, is that the only source for it is Jim Cramer, who simply blurted out that there were “rumors” on his Mad Money show on CNBC that day. Then, Cramer’s site TheStreet published a piece highlighting the fact that Cramer had said there were rumors about a possible merger between Wynn and MGM, on the same day. TheStreet even highlighted the Wynn move as its “Move of the Day” with a little 57-second video ditty about it.

Plus500 second largest shareholder to vote against Playtech £460M bid

Plus500’s second largest shareholder Odey Asset management said that it would vote against Playtech’s proposed £460m acquisition bid.

London-based hedge fund Odey Asset management, which has increase its stake in Plus500 from 13% to 25% over the past three weeks, said that the proposed 400p per share is an “opportunistic bid exploiting current regulatory issues and risks.

“In our view 400p materially undervalues Plus500 and we do not intend to vote in favour of the cash acquisition of Plus500 at this price,” said the Odey Asset management in a statement. “Even considering the current regulatory issues and near term risks, we believe the intrinsic value of the business on a longer term view is materially higher than 400p.”

“We understand that this cash acquisition may make sense for Plus500′s management and staff, whom we expect could be further incentivized by Playtech after the acquisition has completed. However, for independent shareholders we believe the current offer represents too great a discount compared to intrinsic valuation as a standalone entity,” added Odey Asset.

Betfred named as third bidder for Ladbrokes Irish business

Irish business news sources have revealed that UK bookies Betfred is the third bidder of Ladbrokes’ Irish business in the ongoing examinership, following Boylesports and Paddy Power.

The Irish Times have reported that Betfred is studying a potential bid for the troubled retail betting division, however the newspaper has questioned whether Betfred will place a firm offer.

Same with Paddy Power, who was reportedly preparing for a £1.6b bid for Ladbrokes, Betfred remains discreet with its bid and chose not to give any comment. Unlike Boylesports who have publicly showed a strong will to invest an eight figure sum in the division, should they be granted approval for takeover.

Owned by Fred brothers and Peter Done, Betfred is based in Cheshire and was established in 1960.

WSOP Day #12 Review: Hellmuth in Contention for 14th WSOP Bracelet; Busquet Leads a Pro Heavy Field in Millionaire Maker; Negreanu Makes Day 2 of the Limit Hold’em Six-Max

Lee Davy brings you the news, and some of his views, on the 12th day of the 46th Annual World Series of Poker, including Phil Hellmuth’s march towards his 14th gold bracelet, Olivier Busquet leading a pro heavy field in the Millionaire Maker, and Daniel Negreanu makes it through to Day 2 of the Limit Hold’em Six-Max event.

Phil Hellmuth Jr. loves proving people wrong. There was a time when he walked around the Rio with the words ‘one trick pony’ sewn into the inside of his baseball cap. He’s going to have unstitch that label. The most successful player in World Series of Poker (WSOP) history, is becoming a two trick pony.

Razz is his new thing. In 2012, he won the $2,500 version of the event, last year he lost a dominating chip lead position to finish runner-up to Ted Forrest in the $1,500 version of the game, and this year the $10,000 Razz Championship is the event we start talking about his 14th gold bracelet attempt.

There are 12-players remaining from a starting field of 103 (a 9% drop in field size year-on-year). Hellmuth poised nicely in third spot. His skills aside, he is by far the most experienced player in the world when it comes to the deeper end of a WSOP event. He knows how to close these things out better than anyone.

Connecticut Guv to Sign Casino Bill into Law

Gov. Dannel Malloy intends to sign a bill into law, which would call the state’s two federally recognized tribes to create a multi-step process for the launch of a new jointly operated casino.

Connecticut guv spokesman Mark Bergman announced that the bill was to be signed on Friday, but the bill was not ready.

Under the proposed legislation, the Mohegan and the Mashantucket Pequot tribes would have to prepare a request for proposals from municipalities that are interested in hosting a casino which would compete gambling venues in neighboring states, particularly Massachusetts’ MGM Springfield.

In March, tribal chiefs announced that the property is likely to be located along Interstate 91 in the north-central part of Connecticut.
