Australian Open in-play betting could speed up IGA review

High level of in-play betting on the Australian Open is expected to put pressure on the Australian Government to speed up Interactive Gambling Act review.

William Hill has become the first ever bookmaker to partner with a Grand Slam tennis tournament. Its sponsorship with Australia Open, which was according to reports to have cost $4 million, is part of the William Hill’s effort to extend the range of its in-play products to tennis fans.

“Tennis is a key product for In-Play and William Hill Australia will continue to extend its product range to include the ability to live-stream matches and bet in-play around these events,’’ William Hill said in a statement.

As part of the agreement, electronic advertising boards, similar to those around the MCG and Etihad Stadium, have been installed inside Rod Laver Arena, Margaret Court Arena and Hisense Arena. The boards will show William Hill’s ads during breaks in play as well as commercials from other sponsors.

Indian cricket team banned from visiting casinos in Australia

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is keeping a close watch on its players, even from a continent away.

The Indian cricket team, led by Mahendra Singh Dhoni, was in Australia over the weekend to play the One Day International against the Aussie team. And to—possibly—boost the team’s morale, the BCCI announced the team that they are banned from visiting casinos while they’re in the country, One India reported.

The unprecedented instruction was relayed to the team during their bus ride from Brisbane to Melbourne, where the tournament was held.

According to The Sunday Express, BCCI President Shashank Manohar and Secretary Anurag Thakur were worried that the cricket players would meet the “wrong people,” or be seen at a place not suitable for a national player, especially since the team is staying in five-star hotel in Melbourne that houses one of the country’s most famous casinos.

Australian Open kicks off with match-fixing allegations

Secret files showing that international crime syndicates have organized match fixing at the top level of world tennis have come out in the Australian Open.

A joint investigation by the BBC and BuzzFeed News has found that more than 70 players appeared on nine leaked lists of suspected fixers, in which 16 players ranked in the world top 50 including Grand Slam champions and doubles winners at Wimbledon.

According to reports, which was published as the first major of the 2016 Grand Slam—the Australian Open—kicks off Monday; players are being approached in hotels and offered $50,000 (AUD73,100) or more to fix their matches. Gambling syndicates in Russia, Italy and Sicily have made “hundreds of thousands” of British pounds betting on the scores of matches right up to the top level, including Wimbledon and the French Open.

The leaked files came from the 2008 probe, which was triggered by a match in Poland in August 2007 between Russia’s Nikolay Davydenko and Argentine player Martin Vassallo Arguello. The game attracted millions of dollars’ worth of highly suspicious bets from Russian-based accounts. It also showed that Arguello exchanged 82 text messages with the suspected ringleader of an Italian gambling syndicate.

Bitcoin rift widens: Developer declares the digital currency a failure

One of Bitcoin’s long-time supporters and developers is walking away from the digital currency. His reason: the Bitcoin experiment has failed.

Mike Hearn is a devoted Bitcoin enthusiast who quit his job at Google to work on the cryptocurrency’s technology full-time. But last week, Hearn wrote a lengthy blog post on Medium, explaining why he has decided to turn his back on it.

“The fundamentals are broken, and whatever happens to the price in the short term, the long-term trend should probably be downwards,” he said. “I will no longer be taking part in Bitcoin development and have sold all my coins.”

In his post, Hearn offered a detailed explanation of why he has lost faith in Bitcoin and its community, which actually boils down to one thing—internal politics. The developer admitted the decentralized blockchain technology has some shortcomings that have caused problems for users, which is further aggravated by infighting within the community.

BCLC sued for misleading casino developer on gaming projects for First Nations

A casino and gaming developer is taking the British Columbia Lottery Corporation (BCLC) to the court, claiming the corporation led it on the possibility of opening gaming facilities on North Shore, only to award the exclusive to another company.

Pinnacle Gaming Solutions is owned by North Vancouver resident David Moretto. In his lawsuit filed last Jan. 8, Moretto said his company was retained by several First Nations, including the Tsleil-Waututh, in October 2007 to help them with “the prospect of developing gaming facilities on their lands.”

According to a North Shore News report, which quoted the lawsuit, Moretto and the Tsleil-Waututh had an agreement that Pinnacle will be its agent in developing a casino in their land. Among Pinnacle’s responsibilities is to talk to BCLC and go through the necessary process for licensing. If the development pushes through, Pinnacle will receive a percentage of the casino’s gross revenues.

From 2008 to 2015, Pinnacle representatives met with their BCLC counterparts, including BCLC presidents Michael Graydon and Jim Lightbody, to talk about the gaming facilities project for the First Nations, according to a The Province report.
