Berjaya Corp. launches lottery operations in Vietnam

Malaysia’s Berjaya Corporation Bhd has finally rolled out its first lottery product in Vietnam.

On Monday, the Malaysian company’s joint venture in Vietnam—Berjaya Gia Thinh Investment Technology Joint Stock Company (Berjaya GTI)—launched its first game, Mega 6/45 Lotto Jackpot Game, The Star reported.

“Within the first month of operations, 800 point of sale terminals for Mega 6/45 tickets will be available throughout Ho Chi Minh City with some 10,000 point of sale terminals planned nationwide within the next five years,” the company said in a statement.

In 2010, the Malaysian firm proposed a lottery project to the Vietnamese government, but it took almost six years before Vietnam finally decided to award Berjaya and the Vietnam Computerized Lottery One Member Limited Liability Company (Vietlott) an exclusive contract to invest and operate a nationwide computerized lottery for 18 years.

Federal judge tosses Draftkings’ petition back to Tennessee court

A federal judge has thumbed down the request of daily fantasy sports (DFS) provider DraftKings to hear the lawsuit filed by a wife of a gambler who has lost over $40,000.

Judge Harry S. Mattice has remanded the case of Erica Miller against DraftKings to the Chancery Court of Greene County, Tennessee. According to gambling news website Legal Sports Report, Mattice’s decision represents one of the first formal rulings against the DFS provider.

In his June 30, 2016 decision, Judge Mattice stressed that the DFS failed to convince the court that Mattice’s case should be tried in a federal court given the fact that the amount involved in the lawsuit exceeds $75,000.

By rule, federal courts only hear cases worth $75,000 or more. Smaller cases stay with state-level courts.

Turkish lira in trouble: Will bitcoin save the day?

A new wave of crisis is threatening the already fragile global financial market.

Last week, the Turkish lira dropped 5 percent against the U.S. dollar—a worrying trend for a major currency—less than 24 hours after news broke out that the military has taken over the government of Turkey. The violent uprising, which left at least 161 people dead, caused the iShares MSCI Turkey ETF to decrease significantly in value as well.

So far, it appears things have already calmed down in Turkey. But it remains impossible to tell how the matters will unfold in the coming days. The uncertainty in the country has already prompted consumers and investors to rush to bank ATMs to withdraw their cash, putting a strain on the local economy.

On a global scale, the events in Turkey could deal another blow to the international financial market, which is still reeling from the effects of the Brexit vote. So where does digital currency fit into all of these?

Tribes expand gambling clout in Washington, South Dakota

Tribes continue to cement its footprint in the US gambling industry with a series of casino expansions across the country.

Our first stop takes us to Washington State, where the Spokane Tribe of Indians announced its plan to break ground this fall a $400 million casino in the suburb of Airway Heights.

The Associated Press reported that the Tribe targets to open the first phase of the casino project, which will have 450 slot machines and 12 game tables, in 2017. Tribal Chairwoman Carol Evans said that the new off-reservation casino will help lift their members out of poverty and benefit the entire region.

The project, which will be developed by phases over 10 years, has won the final approval from Gov. Jay Inslee last month after the U.S. Department of Interior approved it last year.

Taking Stock of Gaming Stocks, Midyear Review

The world feels increasingly like a structurally faulty roller coaster. There are so many potential fault lines that just seem to keep getting more intense on both monetary and political fronts. Existing political unions are disintegrating, at least on paper if not in actual practical fact. Attempted coups in politically tricky nations are shaking up NATO and could end up redefining the global balance of power. Terrorist attacks are getting increasingly worse especially in Europe, cop shootings are peppering the United States, lead political candidates are set to “declare war” on ISIS whatever that means practically, and the Italian banking sector looks to be on the verge of collapse.

These conditions have to make any investor anxious, which is not necessarily a bad thing. Tempered sentiment is usually good for sustaining bull markets with the so-called wall of worry, and monetarily we are now in a definite boom phase. With the minefield in mind, let’s see where we can navigate for the second half of 2016, which will definitely prove interesting if scary as…Winter is Coming.

United States

The US currently looks like the safest place to put money for the next few months. The dollars are flowing, the markets are breaking new highs, and Las Vegas is right next door to the core of new Federal Reserve money which seems to be amplified in California. We went back into MGM on June 28 and we are now at an 8.6% gain there. Almost any US gaming stock will do well in the months ahead except the ones in existential danger like Caesars. MGM is just easier to hold because it is the least volatile.

Gambling industry stingy with U.S. presidential candidates

What can the gaming industry expect from what is considered to be the wildest and most unpredictable of U.S. presidential elections? Not much, if the presidential campaign contributions are any indication.

Filings with the Federal Election Commission showed a smattering of relatively minor contributions to the presidential candidates’ coffers. As of June 21, the gambling industry has contributed a total of $513,121 across the entire field of candidates—a pittance compared to the millions of dollars that the operators, particularly Sheldon Adelson, shelled out five years ago.

The biggest individual donor so far is Wynn Resorts Chairman and CEO Steve Wynn, who has given $65,800, mostly to Republican hopefuls who have since dropped out of the race. Of the total amount, $25,000 went to a super PAC that supported New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie; another $25,000 went to a super PAC supporting Carly Fiorina; $7,700 to the Marco Rubio’s Rubio Victory committee; $5,400 to the campaign of Texas Sen. Ted Cruz; and $2,700 to Democrat nominee Hillary Clinton’s campaign.

Las Vegas Sands Corp. chairman Sheldon Adelson was more frugal this time around, with a total of $18,300 to the presidential campaign donations so far—a far cry from the estimated $92 million he blew on Newt Gingrich and Mitt Romney five years ago. This time, Adelson’s money went to Rubio ($10,200), Jeb Bush ($2,700), Cruz ($2,700), and Sen. Lindsey Graham ($2,700), according to Las Vegas Review-Journal.

Fitch: Evolving US gambling regulations put Atlantic City casinos at-risk

As the U.S gambling industry starts to evolve due to the introduction of bills aim to regulate other forms of gambling, credit debt watcher Fitch Ratings sounded alarm bells that such progress will come with a hefty price.

Fitch warned that Atlantic City casinos will feel the full brunt of these pending gaming regulations in the near term even though other casinos across the US will also face a changing regulatory landscape

Among the challenges that Atlantic City has to face includes the surge of public’s interest in iGaming and daily fantasy sports, and the casino expansion in North Jersey. New Jersey residents is expected to put to vote on whether to legalize gaming outside the Atlantic City in November.

Should New Jersey residents vote in favor of the construction of new casinos in North Jersey, Fitch pointed out that more Atlantic City casinos will be shuttered.

With the World Series of Poker Main Event playing down to the November Nine, Lee Davy gives you a blow-by-blow account of all the action of the final day level-by-level and here is Level 34.

Four players lost their tournament lives in the previous level: Jeff Hakim, Matthew Moss, Kakwan Lau, and Thomas Miller. Each of them received $269,430. The person unfortunate enough to lose their way in 18th position will get a pay jump to $338,288, and I don’t think any of them will care.

Cliff Josephy ended the level as the chip leader; James Obst ended it as the short stack.

Five simple considerations to improve your online casino’s product positioning

With the constantly expanding provider & games list to choose from, deciding where to position & how to display your online casino game content is a common strategic conundrum you can face as a casino operator. Below are some basic tips to help you.

1. Order Your Content Effectively

Prioritise your content according to market and player. Big Joker 2000 might perform exceptionally well in Norway, but might not achieve great results in other markets. Understand what works in what market and make sure you prioritise your content onsite accordingly.

Australian bookies, TV execs protest proposed gambling advertising limits

Australia’s bookmakers and television networks are hitting back against efforts to restrict their ability to advertise.

Australia’s recent elections left longtime anti-gambling politicians Nick Xenophon and Andrew Wilkie with new capacity to further their agenda, including banning bookmakers from advertising on TV during live sports broadcasts and ‘G-rated’ family-friendly time slots.

Tim Worner, CEO of Australian media giant Seven West Media, slammed the proposed ad ban as “draconian and unnecessary.” Worner said broadcasters already had “extensive restrictions in place” and claimed that the effectiveness of these restrictions meant that “the incidence of complaints from our viewers on sports betting ads is actually low.”

Ten Network CEO Paul Anderson echoed Worner’s concerns, saying free-to-air television was “not seeing complaints or concern from our audience.” Anderson also reminded pols that FTA TV was already “by far” the most restricted advertising platform.

Social sports betting app uses Uber-style ratings to shame losers into paying up

A new app is looking to merge real-money sports betting with Uber-style user rankings, all while trying to avoid earning the ire of US law enforcement.

Bait, a new app created by Chicago resident Ian Peacock, attempts to satisfy Americans’ desire to bet on sports while not resulting in jail time for either bettors or its creator. The app, which is currently in beta release, hopes to make its official debut before the start of the upcoming 2015 NFL season.

Bait works by accessing a user’s phone contact list. Bettors can set up head-to-head wagers – straight up, over/under, against the spread – with friends and family using Las Vegas betting lines. The app will initially offer wagers on college and pro football, basketball and hockey, while golf will likely be added in a few months.

Once the outcome of the wager is known, Bait automatically notifies each sides of the bet. The losing bettor is then asked to click the app’s ‘pay’ button, which takes he/she to the winner’s account on Venmo, the mobile payment subsidiary of PayPal.
