Wynn secures key victory in battle vs Curtatone over Everett casino

Wynn-1, Somerville-0.

Somerville Mayor Joseph A. Curtatone’s appeal against Wynn’s proposed $2 billion casino in Everett—the Wynn Boston Harbor—has been dealt a major blow last week after a state environmental officer recommended the casino operator’s needed environmental license be granted, state news outlets reported.

Jane Rothchild, a hearing officer for Massachusetts’ Department of Environmental Protection, came out with a 50-page decision that backed Wynn’s plans for the casino resort, albeit with some revisions that include adding ferry services, a fishing pier, and a kayak and canoe launch near the complex.

Rothchild pointed out that the casino project will bring back “to useful life” the 33 acres of land that has been contaminated for decades with lead, arsenic and other pollutants.

Brandon Shack-Harris: Watching Whales Fly

Lee Davy sits down with Brandon Shack-Harris, to talk about his early life, his passion for music, and a why he sometimes feels the urge to watch whales fly.

Richard Branson, founder of the Virgin Group, and Ingvar Kamprad, founder of Ikea, both suffered from dyslexia. Cristiano Ronaldo was born with a racing heart, lost his father due to alcoholism when he was 20 and grew up in abject poverty. Oprah Winfrey also grew up in poverty, was molested in her teens, and suffered the heartbreak of the death of her child.

All of these people went on to become real success stories in their chosen field. Being raised under difficult circumstances is challenging. We all know that. But we also know that it’s through adversity that we see human beings truly excel.

And as I watched a Polar Bear tearing people a new asshole in yet another World Series of Poker (WSOP) final table, that’s exactly what I saw.

WSOP ME Day 5 Review: Wong, Suchanek and Hallaert Lead Final 80

Day 5 of the World Series of Poker Main Event is in the books with Jerry Wong, Jan Suchanek, and Kenny Hallaert leading the final 80 players. Dan Colman, Griffin Benger, and Max Silver also had an enjoyable day.

Bryan Piccioli went to bed knowing he had more chips than anyone at the end of Day 4 of the World Series of Poker (WSOP) Main Event. Five tough levels have passed since then. The action folds to him in the hijack seat. Piccioli looks down at his cards and opens to 140,000. A few folds later and Jerry Wong three-bets to 405,000 from the small blind. Back to Piccioli and he moves all-in for his last 2.6m. Wong makes the call. The dealer motions for the players to allow their cards to see the roof.

To crash and burn on Day 1 hurts, but it’s a paper cut compared to the shotgun wound to the head you feel when you tumble out on Day 5. By this time you have begun to believe. The dream has dared come alive. And then in a blink of an eye, it’s gone, and you know you may never find it again.

6,737 players ponied up the $10,000 required to enter this magical kingdom. That meant 107,833 entrants had competed in the 47th Annual WSOP, and it was the most they have ever witnessed. Those players had raised $221,211,336 in prize money. $8m was waiting for the winner of the final tournament of what has been another fantastic series.
