Unauthorized Macau UnionPay transactions reach $626M in 2016: report

Despite the government’s tightened grip on the rampant, unauthorized use of China UnionPay’s card system, authorities are reporting that the number of retail transactions using unregistered UnionPay point-of-sale terminals in the city state has more than quadrupled in 2016.

The city state’s Judiciary Police estimated that unauthorized China UnionPay transactions have reached MOP4.995 billion (USD626.5 million) last year, GGRAsia reported. That amount is about four times more than that MOP1.22 billion (USD153 million) calculated for the full year of 2015.

Macau police told the news outlet that they have conducted a total of 25 investigations involving unregistered UnionPay handheld terminals last year—20 of which were forwarded to the Public Prosecutions Office “for further action,” while the remaining five probes didn’t move forward as cases due to “lack of evidence.”

The police linked 53 people in the investigation: 14 from Macau, 38 from mainland China and one from Hong Kong, according to the report.

Wynn Macau premieres new 25 gaming tables for 2017

Casino operator Wynn Macau has finally received the 25 extra gaming tables for its Cotai resort in Macau.

In an email to GGRAsia, the gaming operator confirmed that “it has applied for and been granted” the additional “new-to-market live-dealer gaming tables,” which it was entitled to. The company, however, did not specify when it made the request or when the tables had been granted.

The announcement came almost two weeks after Macau casino regulator, the Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau (DICJ) revealed that Wynn Macau had yet to request the extra gambling tables for its Wynn Palace resort. Meanwhile, Sands China—via Venetian Macau Ltd.—has already requested and subsequently granted 25 new-to-market tables for its Parisian Macao property.

Wynn Palace was awarded 100 mass gaming tables before it opened in August, to be followed by 25 more tables on January 1, and another 25 tables in 2018.

In his speech at the celebratory evening concert on Thursday night, the real estate mogul and reality television show star said, “We are going to make America great again. And I’ll add, greater than ever before.”

First Cagayan vows tech boost to retain online gambling licensees

First Cagayan Leisure and Resort Corporation plans to spend millions to boost its technical infrastructure in the hope of retaining its online gambling licensees, but it may be making beds in a burning house.

This week, online gambling operators licensed in the Cagayan Economic Zone Authority (CEZA) began receiving letters from First Cagayan President Francis Hernando outlining the corporation’s new “strategic direction,” which is intended to help operators craft their “short and long-term business plans.”

Hernando says First Cagayan’s new direction places a “particular focus on data and telecommunications facilities.” Specifically, First Cagayan is pledging to spend approximately $4m to upgrade its existing data center in Cagayan Cyberpark inside the Cagayan Freeport, while a further $3m will go toward upgrading data infrastructure outside the Freeport.

Hernando claims the upgrades will make First Cagayan’s hosting and connectivity capabilities on par with “established international gaming jurisdictions.” It’s also having discussions with unnamed parties regarding a project “to supply stable electricity to the Freeport.”

Oakland Raiders file paperwork for Las Vegas move

After decades of shunning Las Vegas, the NFL is finally moving closer to having a team in the Sin City.

Oakland Raiders have submitted paperwork with the NFL to move from Oakland to Las Vegas, the league announced on Thursday.

“The application will be reviewed in the coming weeks by league staff and the Stadium and Finance Committees. The relocation of a franchise requires the affirmative vote of three-quarters of the NFL clubs,” the league said in a statement. This means that the Raiders need to receive approval from at least 24 of the 32 teams, and the earliest the owners are expected to vote is during their Annual League Meeting in late March.

Major sports leagues, including the NFL and the National Hockey League (NHL), were previously against having their teams play in a city where sports betting is legal—until Oakland Raiders owner Mark Davis started discussing his plans to relocate the team to the Sin City. The league said it is open to put a team in Las Vegas, but only if the city comes up with a good stadium deal.
