Swedish bettors still favor int’l online gambling sites

Swedish-facing international online gambling operators continued to outpace domestic operators’ revenue growth in 2016.

Figures released this week by Sweden’s Lotteriinspektionen gaming regulator show the overall domestic regulated market enjoyed net revenue of SEK 17.1b (US $$1.93b) in 2016, 3% higher than in 2015. Meanwhile, international online gambling sites serving Swedish punters are believed to have seen their Swedish market revenue jump 16% to SEK 5.1b.

The international online revenue growth is greater than that reported by state monopoly Svenska Spel, which reported overall revenue flat at SEK 9b, with land-based revenue falling 3% to SEK 7.07b and online revenue up 14% to SEK 1.92b. Svenska Spel’s FY16 report showed mobile gambling sales up 57% year-on-year, thanks in part to the Q4 launch of a new mobile bingo product for both phones and tablets. Svenska Spel’s operating income inched up 1.3% to SEK 4.8b last year.

The ATG horseracing monopoly’s overall revenue was up 9% to SEK 4.07b, driven primarily by its online betting operations, which rose 16% to SEK 2.1b. The Postcode Lottery was flat year-on-year at just over SEK 2b, while the People Games lottery rose 10% to SEK 680m.

Slots the star of Spain’s regulated online gambling market

Slots was the star and poker the ugly duckling of Spain’s regulated online gambling market in Q4 2016.

Figures released this week by Spanish gaming regulator Dirección General de Ordenación del Juego (DGOJ) show healthy gains in the online gambling market in the three months ending December 31, with overall turnover rising one-fifth to €2.9b, while operator revenue rose nearly one-third to €125.6m.

Sports betting continued to rule the turnover charts, but just barely. Online sports wagers totaled €1.27b in Q4, up 7.7% from Q4 2015, while casino turnover surged 54% to €1.2b. Bingo enjoyed more modest spending gains, rising 16.7% to €18.8m while poker fell nearly 7% to €415.6m.

Sports betting enjoyed much greater dominance in the Q4 revenue standings with €69.8m (+30.6%), well ahead of casino’s €36m, although the casino vertical’s year-on-year growth was far greater at 58.8%. Bingo revenue was up one-fifth to €2.2m while poker eked out a 4.6% gain to €15.2m.

Irish National Lottery chief denies tax advice claim

The Irish National Lottery has found itself at the center of a controversy stemming from a claim of a previous lotto winner that the agency gave an advice on how to avoid tax.

Lotto boss Dermot Griffin took on a defensive stance on Tuesday amid calls from Senator Kevin Humphreys for the state tax revenue agency to investigate whether or not the National Lottery have helped people to defraud Ireland’s tax system.

It would be recalled that the National Lottery was dragged into the issue after Mary Walsh, who won the €3.4 million (US$3.62 million) lottery winner Mary Walsh, claimed that the firm running the National Lottery advised her at the time of her win that getting family members to sign the ticket would mean she could avoid gift tax.

Speaking to the Irish Sun, the National Lottery insisted that its claims procedure was “in accordance with our statutory and regulatory obligations.”
