Why gambling start ups fail

This is a guest contribution by David McDowell, CEO of FSB Tech. If you would like to submit a contribution please contact Bill Beatty for submission details. Thank you.

A lot has been written recently about how and why online gambling start-ups fail. The premise being that the gaming industry is somehow more difficult to crack than any other established, regulated and competitive industry. This I disagree with.

The bottom line is most start-ups fail, the accepted rule of thumb is 85% of start-ups will fail in the first two years. But to stay specific to the gaming industry I would suggest a few reasons as to why start-ups fail:

Access to capital

NetEnt seals Planet of the Apes license agreement

NetEnt, leading provider of digital gaming solutions, has signed an agreement with 20th Century Fox Consumer Products to exclusively license the Planet of the Apes film franchise for online casino gaming.

The partnership covers the entire Planet of the Apes brand – which has a rich heritage spanning more than 50 years – and will see the multi-media brand used for the first time in online casino gaming.

NetEnt’s Planet of the Apes slot is set to create a huge buzz among film fans and players when it is released in the second half of 2017. The game will feature stunning graphics and unique game mechanics that will bring to life the power and excitement of the brand.

The simian franchise originates from the novel La Planète des Singes. In 1968 the first movie based on the book premiered, and spawned the cherished series. The most recent releases – Rise of the Planet of the Apes (2011) and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (2014) – have both been critical and commercial successes.

World theatre of gaming opens in London

The world’s media assembled at the ExCeL Centre in London’s Docklands this morning for the official ribbon cutting ceremony to mark the opening of the 2017 edition of ICE Totally Gaming. Respected gaming industry journalist David Snook, who is celebrating 50 years reporting on ICE and its predecessors, and Åsa Bredin, CDO at NetEnt and a leading advocate of recruiting more women to senior positions within gaming, had the honour of opening the world’s most prestigious gaming technology event, alongside Kate Chambers, Managing Director of Clarion’s Gaming Division.

Speaking at the event, Kate Chambers said: “David first reported on the premier event in gaming, when it was held at London’s Alexandra Palace in 1967. The industry, powered by advances in technology is now a vastly different business. We are indebted to David as we are to the entire community of gaming media for their ongoing support of ICE.”

She continued: “When David first reported on the industry, there would have been little, if any discussion on diversity! I’m pleased that times have changed, if not at the pace that we would all wish to see.

“Diversity is an issue which is close to my heart and that of Åsa Bredin. It is due to the pioneering work of organisations such as Global Gaming Women and the professional achievements of women such as Åsa, who hold positions of real influence, that it is now firmly on the agenda, including at ICE, where Clarion’s Head of Content, Ewa Bakun, has organised a seminar dedicated to the issue.

Blockchain will fundamentally transform exchange business – Funderbeam CEO Kaidi Ruusalepp

“Blockchain can radically transform exchange sector”, believes Kaidi Ruusalepp, CEO at Funderbeam (exchange for startups) and former CEO at the Estonian Nasdaq subdivision. On March 9, she will speak at Blockchain & Bitcoin Conference Tallinn.

Being experienced in managing Nasdaq, Kaidi founded Funderbeam – an investment and research platform for finding investors and startups.

At the end of 2016, Funderbeam team started creating a blockchain-based exchange. As envisioned by founders, the exchange should be an open platform for trading participants. Several companies and two private investors (one of them is Skype founder Jaan Tallinn) supported the project financially. Total amount of investments has already exceeded 2.5 mln dollars.

Kaidi Ruusalepp is sure that blockchain implementation will solve the problem of transparency in the trading process and become “a financial engine of companies’ growth”.
