Partypoker Add Viennese and Canadian dates to 2017 Grand Prix Poker Tour

Partypoker will launch the Grand Prix Poker Tour on a global scale with new dates pencilled in for the Montesino Casino in Vienna and the Playground Poker Club in Montreal.

In 2015, partypoker and their partners in crime Dusk till Dawn (DTD) announced plans to host a series of low buy-in tournaments played out in iconic football stadiums throughout Great Britain. The Grand Prix Poker Tour (GPPT) was born.

Was it a success?

I guess it was because the online giant has announced two more GPPT events in 2017 and they are going global.

Poker Advice From The Stoics: Projective Visualisation

Lee Davy listens to the Stoic Philosophers to see how he can implement their wisdom in today’s poker world. This time the subject is projective visualisation.

Do you know what grinds my gears?

People who honk their horns.

This morning, I was waiting to get out of my driveway when a car decided to do a three-point turn in the middle of the road. The manoeuvre held up traffic for less than a minute. But it was long enough for people to start honking their horns with the ferocity of a seven-year-old kid who has ADHD playing Whack-a-Mole.

Nevada sportsbooks enjoy record Super Bowl betting handle

Nevada sportsbooks enjoyed record betting handle on the 2017 Super Bowl, while grinding out their third-highest win in the past decade.

According to Nevada Gaming Control Board chairman A.G. Burnett, Nevada-licensed sports betting operators enjoyed betting handle of $138.48m on Super Bowl LI, a new record for the books on the US sports world’s single biggest event, easily topping last year’s $132.5m.

Nevada’s handle on the big game has grown by nearly 40% since 2013’s $99m, with mobile wagering playing a major role in that growth. Among the big game’s big losers was the unidentified punter who bet $1.1m on Atlanta via his mobile betting app with a CG Technology-powered sportsbook.

The books kept $10.9m of this year’s betting volume, representing a 7.9% hold. While the total represents the third-highest win in the last 10 years, it pales in comparison to the record $19.7m the books earned from the Seahawks pummeling the Broncos in 2014, or last year’s $13.3m when the Broncos defeated the Panthers.

AI & Poker: how long before we lift the bans on third-party software?

Lee Davy continues to wring as much juice out of the recent artificial intelligence/poker discussion as possible by suggesting that poker rooms may want to allow humans to use third party software in the coming years.

The tree in my garden has bloomed once this year. But this morning, as I stared out of the window deciding whether to believe in God to blame it for the weather, I noticed several new branches emerging from the trunk.

How did I not notice that before?

Life.

Microgaming Poker Removes Waste & Adds Value; Kramer Wins Vienna Event

The Microgaming Poker Network is busy adding value and removing waste, and Kilian Kramer wins the tour’s Viennese Main Event.

When I read about The Microgaming Poker Network (MPN), my cynical attitude vanishes like Aston Villa. Has the gaffer given everyone a copy of the Lean Startup by Eric Reiss? The MPN isn’t a start-up, but they appear to be using Validated Learning to improve their product, straight out of the Eric Reiss playbook.

Take the lobby, for example. The MPN is busy identifying value and waste. In particular, a focus on spick and spam decluttering.

High Stakes Sit n Go (Non-Hold’em) games = waste.

National Harbor usurps Maryland Live as casino revenue king

Maryland has a new number one casino operator after longtime revenue king Maryland Live was dethroned by MGM Resorts’ National Harbor resort in its first full month of operations.

Figures released Monday by Maryland Lottery and Gaming show the state’s six brick-and-mortar casinos generated revenue of $126.2m in January, nearly 43% more than January 2016’s total. However, absent the contributions of MGM’s National Harbor, the five casinos that were open in both Januarys reported revenue down nearly $11m, a 12.4% year-on-year decline.

The new $1.4b National Harbor, which opened to the public on December 8, reported revenue of $48.8m in its first full month of operations, up from $41.9m in December. The property’s gaming revenue was neatly split between table games ($24.5m) and slots ($24.3m).

Former casino king Maryland Live reported revenue of $44m in January, 15.5% less than the property earned in January 2016. Table games were down more than one-fifth to $16m while slots fared slightly better, falling 10% to $28m.

Mr Green to enter Denmark via Dansk Underholdning deal

Stockholm-based online gambling operator Mr Green is preparing to make a Danish market splash via the acquisition of Dansk Underholdning.

On Monday, Mr Green announced that it had acquired all of the shares of Danish-licensed online operator Dansk Underholdning, whose primary business involves casino games, ahead of Mr Green’s plans to launch its own brand in Denmark later this year.

The deal calls for Mr Green to pay €9m upfront, with a possible additional maximum consideration of €650k payable depending on certain performance benchmarks. Pending regulatory approval, the deal is expected to close in April.

Mr Green says it paid cash for the acquisition, and as such the company’s board of directors will recommend that no dividend be paid to shareholders for the 2016 financial year. The board expects the Dansk Underholdning acquisition will have a positive effect on 2017’s earnings and cash flow.
