PokerStars and their buddies continue their relationship with the seven-time World Snooker Champion, Stephen Hendry, with BetStars sponsoring him for the 2017 Seniors World Championships in Scunthorpe.

Seven-times World Snooker Champion, Stephen Hendry MBE, has extended his partnership with the PokerStars family business after their sports betting arm BetStars announced plans to sponsor him at the upcoming 2017 Super Star Online World Seniors Championships.

The first time the pair climbed into bed with one another was at the PokerStars Festival in London where Hendry appeared in the £990 buy-in Main Event. The former World Champion didn’t make the money but did take home the consolation prize of winning the media event, and that’s not a bad score when you consider PokerStars Team Pros Jake Cody, Liv Boeree, and Felipe Ramos were throwing chips around in that one.

The Seniors World Championships takes place March 22 – 24 at The Baths Hall in Scunthorpe. The event is classic golden oldies event featuring non-tour players aged 40+. The winner not only picks up a £10,000 purse but a wildcard entry into the World Championship Qualifying Rounds.

Two of the four top seeds in the 2017 NCAA Tournament will be in action on Thursday when betting action tips off in Buffalo and Salt Lake City.

And while the defending national champion Villanova Wildcats (31-3) await their opponent from Tuesday’s First Four, the Gonzaga Bulldogs (32-1) will try to prove their naysayers wrong and begin a run for their first-ever Final Four appearance.

The Bulldogs are listed as massive 22-point favorites as the No. 1 seed in the West against the 16th-seeded South Dakota State Jackrabbits (18-16), who won the Summit League in an upset. Gonzaga has gone 20-5-1 against the spread in its last 26 games while South Dakota State is 6-1 straight up so far this month with a longer current winning streak than its opponent at six.

It’s anyone guess if the troubled Baha Mar resort casino in the Bahamas will make its latest scheduled opening date, but they continue to assemble the necessary team just in case.

The new owners of the oft-delayed $3.5b Baha Mar project announced their new casino executive team on Monday. Alex Pariente will serve as executive VP of casino operations and marketing, while John Zaremba is the new VP of casino operations.

Until recently, Pariente was chief gaming officer for Hard Rock International’s Punta Cana resort in the Dominican Republic and before that worked at Wynn Encore in Las Vegas. Zaremba was VP of gaming operations at the Cosmopolitan in Las Vegas and has also done stints at Las Vegas Sands’ Nevada properties.

Baha Mar’s first casino employees reportedly began their training regimen this weekend. The 100k-square-foot casino floor plans to boast 1,100 slot machines and 125 gaming tables when it opens to the public. Note: we said ‘plans to’.

A new problem gambling study is making headlines in the UK but the headline going unreported is just how similar it is to previous studies of its type.

A new study released by the British Journal of General Practice surveyed 1,058 individuals who paid visits to 11 different GP clinics in Bristol. The researchers wanted to determine whether the patients were suffering from problem gambling in addition to the original reasons behind their visits.

The survey found that 0.9% of these patients qualified as problem gamblers, while 4.3% reported problems that were “low to moderate in severity.” These ratios are similar to those previously reported in multiple jurisdictions, including the UK, British Columbia, Singapore and Macau.

The survey also found that risky alcohol use was associated with a nearly threefold increase in problem gambling symptoms while drug use was associated with a fivefold increase. Here again, multiple studies have confirmed that problem gamblers have difficulty saying no to lots of things besides gambling, most likely due to mounting evidence that their brains are wired differently from ‘normal’ people.

Vietnam has handed down sentences to 64 individuals accused of acting as local agents for online gambling operator Dafabet.

On Monday, the People’s Court of Ho Chi Minh City sentenced 38-year-old Singapore resident Wong Boon Leong to 14 months and 24 days in prison for acting as the ringleader of a gang of local agents drumming up business for Dafabet.com, which holds a license issued by the First Cagayan Leisure and Resort Corporation in the Philippines.

Wong’s sentence matches the time he’s spent behind bars since he and his cronies were arrested in December 2015. The net result is that Wong was allowed to walk free following his sentence, which also required Wong to pay a fine of VND 100m (US $4,400) and forfeit another VND 500m he earned from his Vietnamese dealings.

Wong arrived in Vietnam in December 2014, where he liaised with three Ho Chi Minh City residents, who in turn recruited another 60 locals to arrange bets, collect losses and distribute winnings to bettors. At the time of the 2015 arrests, police said the ring had handled wagers worth around VND 1t ($45m).

Connecticut’s Attorney General says there are “not insubstantial” legal risks to allowing the state’s two gaming tribes to build a third casino off their tribal lands.

Last week, Connecticut Gov. Dannel Malloy asked his AG George Jepsen (pictured) to provide an analysis of whether the third casino joint venture proposed for the East Windsor region would survive a legal challenge by rival casino operator MGM Resorts as well as a possible review by the federal Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA).

MGM has challenged the legality of the state legislature awarding the MMCT joint venture of the Mashantucket Pequot and Mohegan tribes an additional casino license without inviting other operators to bid on the project. The tribes say the East Windsor casino is necessary to fend off competition from MGM Springfield, which is set to open next year just across the Massachusetts border.

The Connecticut legislature is currently mulling a bill that would formally authorize the MMCT project but Jepsen’s reply to Malloy’s request says that “it is foreseeable that any legislation resulting in approval of the joint tribal entity’s operation of casino will be challenged” for violating the US Constitution’s commerce and equal protection clauses.
