SkyCity staffer’s six-figure pledge to VIP gambler costs him his job

A former SkyCity Entertainment Group casino staffer who made six-figure promises to a VIP gambler that the company declined to honor has lost his wrongful termination suit.

Longtime SkyCity employee Keith Hayashi was dismissed in May 2016 after the company determined that he’d overstepped his authority in offering rebates to a high-roller without checking with his superiors.

The incident occurred in February 2016, when Hayashi was an operations manager at SkyCity Auckland. Hayashi had been informed that the table limit for certain baccarat side wagers in a specific area of the international VIP section had been capped at $25k.

An unidentified woman had been playing baccarat at the casino for nine days in a salon where bets were capped at $20k. Hayashi, who mistakenly believed the $25k limit applied to her salon, calculated that the women could have won an additional $310,400 had she been allowed to play to what he believed was the ‘correct’ limit during her entire nine-day run.

Israeli police told to steer clear of legal casinos in other countries

Police in Israel have been ordered to police their desire to gamble in casinos, whether at home or abroad.

Casino gambling is currently illegal in Israel and local police tasked with eradicating illegal gambling operations know better than to be caught patronizing such establishments. But Israeli cops have now been told that all casinos – even those located in foreign jurisdictions where gambling is legal – are explicitly off limits.

Haaretz reported that Israel Police Chief Roni Alsheich issued an order to his top brass, instructing them to inform all officers that visiting a casino is now extremely detrimental to one’s career, regardless of where that casino is located.

Understandably, Alsheich’s new order is causing some resentment in the ranks from officers who feel they’re being treated unfairly. But Alsheich reportedly believes that Israeli police need to hold themselves to a higher standard than ordinary citizens, who remain free to get their gamble on while on holiday abroad.

Mybet reach €11.8m settlement with Westlotto over cartel claims

German online betting operator Mybet has reached an out-of-court settlement in its decade-long legal fight with a rival operator over alleged cartel infringement.

On Monday, Mybet announced that it had reached an €11.8m settlement with Westdeutsche Lotterie GmbH & Co. OHG (Westlotto) over what Mybet insisted was the “illegal boycott of its business by the German Lottery and Pools Organization, in breach of competition law.”

In 2014, a Düsseldorf court awarded Mybet subsidiary SWS Service GmbH damages of €11.5m plus interest. Westlotto appealed the ruling, but the German Federal Supreme Court recently referred the case back to the Düsseldorf court. The settlement calls for Mybet to retract its claim, thereby ending the matter.

Mybet said it expects the €11.8m payment to be made sometime this quarter but Mybet will only receive around €4.9m of this sum, due to the requirements of the interim financing with profit participation deal the company entered into with an undisclosed third party last autumn.

SportPesa ink biggest shirt deal in Everton FC history

Kenyan sports betting operator SportPesa has confirmed its new shirt sponsorship with English Premier League footballers Everton FC.

On Monday, SportPesa confirmed rumors that have swirled for months regarding the company’s tie-up with Everton. The club’s new kit, which will be unveiled on Tuesday, will feature SportPesa’s brand on its front as of June 1.

Terms of the five-year deal weren’t disclosed, but the club called it the “biggest commercial partnership” in its 140-year history. In January, Everton CEO Robert Elstone told investors that the new shirt deal represented a “threefold” rise over the club’s previous deal with Thai brewery Chang, which was worth £16m over three years, suggesting SportPesa could be paying up to £9.6m per year.

Elstone hailed SportPesa as “an ambitious and growing global company” that is “committed to significant investment not only into Everton through this partnership but also in the city.” SportPesa recently announced plans to shift its European HQ to Liverpool, a move that is expected to create around 100 local jobs.

Sportbet’s ‘putting the roid in Android’ TV spot tests negative

Australian online betting operator SportsBet is catching heat for an advertisement that critics claim makes light of athletes’ use of performance enhancing drugs (PED).

Sportsbet debuted a new 90-second television commercial this weekend featuring former sprinter Ben Johnson, the Canadian who won gold in the 100m sprint at the 1988 Seoul Olympic Games, only to have his medal rescinded days later after drug tests revealed the presence of anabolic steroids in Johnson’s system.

The ad (viewable below) promotes Sportsbet’s new “juiced up” Android app, which the voiceover hails for “putting the ‘roid in Android,” while Ben himself hails the app for “testing positive for speed.”

The spot also features a blazingly fast American cyclist who may or may not be intended to remind you of drugs cheat Lance Armstrong, along with a surprisingly buff female swimmer (complete with visible Adam’s Apple) and a weightlifter who doesn’t want anything going up his back passage.
