Four dead after dispute between Taiwan online betting rivals

A dispute between unauthorized online gambling operators in Taiwan has led to the deaths of four individuals, according to local media reports.

Last week, the Taipei Times reported that two men and one woman had died of “execution-style” gunshot wounds to the head at an office building in Taoyuan’s Jhongli District on June 22. A third man, Chang Chun-hao, the alleged culprit behind the killings, died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head after being cornered by police while trying to flee the scene of the crime.

According to the report, Chang ran a profitable but highly illegal online sports betting operation from his residence and a private office. Police found a total of 15 computers at the two locations, and believed Chang was netting between NTD3m-5m (US $98k-164k) per month from thousands of betting clients.

In March, around 1k of Chang’s clients reportedly defected to a rival online betting outfit run by two of the shooting victims. Rumors had circulated that Chang’s operation was in financial difficulties and Chang suspected that the rival operation was the source of these rumors.

Teddy Sagi cuts Playtech stake to 6.3% following £340m share sale

Playtech founder Teddy Sagi has sold off another major chunk of his holdings in the gambling technology firm.

On Tuesday, Sagi sold shares equating to 11.5% of the UK-listed Playtech, raising roughly £340m in the process. The sale of the 36.5m shares came after the stock hit an all-time high of £10.15 on Friday. Playtech shares fell 3.1% following Sagi’s selloff, closing at £9.62 on Tuesday.

It’s the third major Sagi selloff since last November, which has boosted his cash pile by £782m while reducing his stake in the company from 33.6% to just 6.3% as of Tuesday.

Sagi’s investment vehicle Brickington Trading Ltd has promised not to sell any further Playtech shares for at least 180 days but, given the hectic pace of Sagi’s divestment, one should likely expect another major share sale within hours of that lockup’s expiry.

Hard Rock selling stake in Cyprus casino project to Melco Int’l

Casino operator Hard Rock International (HRI) has quietly exited its Cyprus integrated resort joint venture, according to stock market filings.

On Monday, the government of the Republic of Cyprus officially signed its contract with a consortium consisting of HRI, Hong Kong-listed Melco International Development and local firm Cyprus Phasouri (Zakaki) Ltd, to build Europe’s first integrated resort project in the Limassol region. The consortium was granted the lone Cyprus casino license late last year.

But Monday also saw Melco file papers with the Hong Kong Stock Exchange indicating that it had entered into an agreement to purchase HRI’s interest in the consortium. Melco and HRI each held a 35.37% stake in the joint venture but the deal will see Melco’s share rise to 70.74%, effectively putting it in the driver’s seat for all future decisions regarding the project.

The price HRI will receive for selling its stake in the Cyprus project to Melco wasn’t disclosed and the ownership change is subject to approval by the Cypriot government. HRI has yet to issue any statement of its own regarding the sale but the imminent exit from its Cypriot JV follows just days after the HRI-Melco tandem officially withdrew a similar tandem bid on an integrated resort project in Spain’s Catalan region.

Lottery betting site Lottoland fined £150k for misleading consumers

The UK’s gambling regulator has slapped a £150k fine on lottery betting operator Lottoland for misleading customers as to what they were betting on.

On Tuesday, the UK Gambling Commission (UKGC) announced it would require Lottoland to make a £150k contribution to socially responsible causes after determining that the operator “did not make it clear to consumers that they were betting on the outcome of a lottery draw and not actually taking part in a lottery.” Lottoland was dinged a further £9k to cover the costs of the UKGC probe.

In February, the UK Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) spanked Lottoland over a radio advert that the watchdog felt misled consumers as to whether they were in fact directly participating in a EuroMillions lottery draw rather than betting on a lottery outcome.

The UKGC says its own investigation found that Lottoland’s website, social media and third-party marketing promotions “failed to make it clear” that customers were in fact betting on the outcome of a lottery draw.

Bombay High Court reaffirms game of rummy is not gambling

The Nagpur bench of the Bombay High Court came to the rescue of a businessman who was charged with gambling after he was seen playing a game of rummy in his club.

Gajendra Kedia, a businessman in the city of Amravati in Maharashtra, filed a petition asking the high court to quash the charges filed at the Rajapeth Police Station last year.

Kedia, who runs an ice factory, rented out his property to the Shivleela Sporting and Recreational Club, of which he was also a member, “to promote social and recreational activities, including sporting games such as carom, chess, hockey, football, cricket, card games and rummy,” the Times of India reported.

According to the report, the club sought permission from the police commissioner of Amravati to run a card room, table tennis and rummy on its premises. But in May 2016, police raided the club and accused Kedia and 27 other of indulging in gambling activities at the Shivleela Sporting and Recreational Club at Amravati, and booked all the accused under Sections 4 and 5 of the Maharashtra Prevention of Gambling Act, 1887.

Bodog sponsor Ayr United for 7th year

Last year Bodog’s topless body-paint kit launch got into hot water but continuity is vital in football and so the decision has been taken at the highest level to continue as before.

Founder of the Bodog brand, Calvin Ayre, explained: “After the controversy of last year’s kit launch we felt we should change our strategy; so this year we are using a body-painted model in the away strip rather than the home one. We hope the pictures will give The Honest Men the boost they need for promotion and a good Cup run too. ‘Mon Ayr!”

Ayr United Football Club added: “It’s a big season for the club and its great to have Bodog on board again. In the modern era its pretty rare to have such a long-term sponsor and there’s aplenty to be positive about the season ahead as we strive for promotion once more.”

Ayr United was formed in 1910 and they play in the Scottish First Division. Bodog also sponsor The Corinthian Steamrollers in Brazil and have previously been shirt sponsors of English Premier League Club West Bromwich Albion and Asian betting partner to Arsenal FC.
