Busted police chief issues mea culpa in Vietnam illegal gambling case

For the most part, police officers are law-abiding, upstanding citizens. The public turn to them to protect their homes and their lives, and, in very rare cases, illegal million-dollar businesses. At least, that’s what happened in Vietnam, as another high-ranking police official has been busted for protecting an illegal online gambling ring worth a reported $420 million.

Phan Van Vinh, formerly the director of the General Police Department at the Ministry of Public Security (MPS), has been arrested in Vietnam’s Phu Tho province for abuse of power. Investigators determined that Vinh worked with another individual in the MPS, as well as outside players, to create the gambling ring. The others were identified as former MPS Director of Cyber Crime Nguyen Thanh Hoa and Nguyen Van Duong, the chairman of CNC, a tech security development company. In addition to the arrest of these three, Phan Sao Nam, formerly the board chairman of online communications giant VTC, was also detained.

According to one unidentified source, Vinh knew from the beginning about the illegal gambling ring, but didn’t do anything to stop it or to report it to the MPS. Investigators have indicated that he will be held for a minimum of four months while the investigation continues. His house in the Nam Dinh Province, located over 100 miles from Phu Tho, was searched, but investigators reportedly only seized several documents and a small amount of cash.

For his actions, Vinh has reportedly only admitted, “I was wrong,” a source told Vietnam Express.

Macau gamblers increasingly break casino no-smoking rules

We all get it. Gambling is a stressful activity. There’s a lot riding on the line—perhaps a few hundred dollars or even as much as a wife or a house. Smokers who gamble find themselves in an anxiety-riddled environment, all too often feeling the urge to light up to curb their addiction and calm their nerves. Unfortunately for gamblers in Macau, recent anti-smoking regulations make it next to impossible to satisfy that need while inside a casino. However, rules are meant to be broken.

Previous legislation in Macau prohibited smoking anywhere in casinos. This was changed, however, in 2014 due primarily to a sharp decline in casino attendance. That year, the law was amended to allow smoking in certain designated lounges inside casinos and VIP rooms, but it was still outlawed on casino mass floors.

The laws were again changed in 2017, banning smoking in the VIP rooms. The law was to be applicable as of January 1, 2018, but casinos were given a grace period to set up VIP smoking lounges that would move the effective date to January 1, 2019. Recent inspections, however, have shown that the casinos aren’t living up to their end of the bargain.

In the first quarter of 2018, violations of anti-smoking laws accounted for 27.8% of all the infractions levied against the casinos, according to local media reports quoting Macau Health Bureau data. A total of 236 inspections were conducted, and detection of unlawful smoking had increased by 138.6%. The increase was due in part to a greater number of inspections being performed at the casinos.

Astros overtake the Dodgers on World Series odds

The old saying is that a team can’t clinch a playoff berth with a strong April, but it can essentially end its postseason chances with a horrid first month of baseball. Thus, you can probably write off struggling 2018 clubs like the Tampa Bay Rays, Cincinnati Reds, Miami Marlins and San Diego Padres still competing in October. Not that they were ever expected to be very good.

Earlier this spring, the Los Angeles Dodgers were the +500 favorites to win the club’s first title since that Kirk Gibson/Orel Hershiser team in 1988 upset Oakland in the Fall Classic. The Dodgers have been uneven in the early going, however, and appear to miss All-Star third baseman Justin Turner more than most experts expected.

Los Angeles is too talented to keep struggling much longer and is still at +500 on those MLB futures but is now trailing the team that beat it in the 2017 World Series, the Houston Astros (+425).

Microgaming backs All-in Diversity Project as founding member

ISLE OF MAN – Microgaming has joined the All-in Diversity Project as a founding member to help spearhead progress towards a more inclusive gaming sector.

Established in 2017, the All-in Diversity Project is an industry-driven initiative that aims to measure and facilitate an open discussion about diversity, equality and inclusion across the global betting and gaming sector. Microgaming joins the project as a founding member alongside leading names in the industry.

Formed by gambling executives Kelly Kehn and Christina Thakor-Rankin, the initiative’s primary objective is to establish a global industry standard index designed to be the definitive benchmarking tool for measuring diversity and inclusion in the sector. The initiative will provide annual reports on progress, in addition to providing best practice recommendations to improve diversity and inclusion within the industry in areas such as corporate governance, recruitment and equal pay.

John Coleman, Microgaming CFO, comments: “Our diverse workforce helps keep us strong, dynamic and moving forward. It is important that we identify industry-specific barriers to inclusion and diversity so we can continue to work on areas where we can help diversity thrive. We look forward to working with All-in Diversity and being part of the driving force aimed at creating a more inclusive environment within the industry for years to come.”

First shirt sponsorship deal paid in Bitcoin Cash (BCH)

…and paid for with profits from BCH appreciation

Bodog drops Ayr United as a new sponsor steps in: Bodog’s seven-year association with Ayr United has come to an end with CoinGeek.com, a supporter of both The Honest Men and Bitcoin Cash (BCH) coming in to take over the shirt branding of Ayr United.

CoinGeek.com is the backer behind the deal but the club shirt will be physically branded by the cryptocurrency Bitcoin BCH, the only true blockchain coin, in a true global first.

Ayr United’s Commercial Director Graeme Miller explains: “We were initially approached to see whether we could accept sponsorship payment in BCH. It was a big learning curve for us but we are very happy to be the first club to accept not just payment by BCH but also to promote the cryptocurrency to a wider audience.”

To Hustle or not to hustle: a question for professional poker players

After reading an excellent blog post by the marketing guru, Mark Schaefer, questioning the impact that Gary Vaynerchuk’s Hustle mentality has on the world, Lee Davy, applies the lesson to the world of poker.

A friend sent me this text, yesterday.

“I saw your Instagram video this morning. You are a fucking eader.”

A smiley yellow cartoon face with tears flying out of the eyes followed.

888Poker’s 8-Team WSOP promo returns with a new team and a new set of rules

888Poker’s 8-Team World Series of Poker Promotion returns for a second season, this time with a new team, a few new team captains and a new set of rules.

888Poker and the World Series of Poker (WSOP) are like Cagney and Lacey. I can’t remember a time when the pair wasn’t joined at the hip. Last year, the online poker room made the most of that union through their 8-Team WSOP Promo, and they believe it’s worth another shot.

Backstory.

In the months leading up to the 2017 WSOP, 888Poker announced the inaugural 8-Team promo. The online poker room would send five teams of three players to the WSOP (Captain, Wingman and Online Qualifier). The job of the Captain and Wingman was to do everything in their power to ensure their qualifier lasted the longest.

Here are some of the most significant scores earned throughout the world in the past 24-48 hours.

We will begin in Barcelona, and the partypoker LIVE MILLIONS Grand Final. Yesterday, I shared the news that Andreas Eiler had defeated 88-entrants to take the €700,000 first prize in the first of four Super High Rollers, and now I can inform you that Belgium’s finest poker export, Davidi Kitai, has beaten 90-entrants to win the second event for the same amount.
