Gambling marketing musings: 888, WPT, Aspers & the white triangular bin

In another instalment of Gambling Marketing Musings, Lee Davy takes a look at the partnership between 888Poker, the World Poker Tour and Aspers and how the three connect through brand story.

If you’re European, it’s 10% likely that you were conceived in an IKEA bed. I’m not sure of the odds you own one of the triangularly shaped bins in your bathroom, but I bet you do.

If you’re from Sweden, you know that Ingvar Kamprad founded IKEA in 1943, smack bang in the middle of Hitler’s little party. Kamprad’s entrepreneurial skills began aged five when he sold matches to friends.

Suffering from dyslexia, Kamprad’s father rewarded him financially for doing well at school, and he used the money to start a small mail-order business called IKEA (an acronym of his name, and the farm and town where he grew up Ingvar Kamprad Elmataryd Agunnaryd).

Taxi for Pardew: WBA boss becomes the Premier League’s 10th casualty

The 2017/18 Premier League season has equalled the record for the number of managers sacked in a season as Alan Pardew becomes the tenth manager to lose his job after West Brom fired him this week.

Those who know more than me believe Alan Pardew will never again manage a top-flight club after somebody woke up the West Brom board and told them they were bottom of the league with six matches left.

Taxi!

Oh no, the team stole it.

SportPesa rethinking Kenya sponsorship moratorium?

Kenya’s leading sports betting operator SportPesa appears to be rethinking its decision to rescind local sports sponsorships to protest the government’s gambling tax hikes.

SportPesa scrapped all its sponsorships of Kenyan sporting bodies and teams in January, making good on its threat to respond to the government hiking gambling revenue taxes from 7.5% to 35%. SportPesa had sponsored the Kenyan Premier League (KPL), as well as KPL teams Gor Mahia FC and AFC Leopards, among numerous other pacts.

But local media quoted sources saying SportPesa has offered to renew its KPL sponsorship before the end of the current season, which got under way in February. However, SportPesa is reportedly offering to pay Sh80m (US$792k) per season, down from the Sh93m per season the company had paid under the original deal.

SportPesa is reportedly also interested in renewing its individual team deals with Gor Mahia and Leopards. The two clubs had earned a combined Sh100m annually from their SportPesa deals, but it remains to be seen what new offers may be forthcoming.

Spieth, McIlroy leads betting lines for 2018 Masters

If one were to tell any golfer in North America, or the world for that matter, that they could have a choice of playing one golf course in the United States, it’s a lock the vast majority of them would chose Augusta National. It’s on the Mount Rushmore of USA sports locations alongside places like Lambeau Field, Fenway Park and Wrigley Field.

Augusta is also just about the most exclusive club there is, so most mere mortals won’t ever get to play the course. However, one week a year any fan can go visit and that’s for the Masters, the most prestigious golf tournament in the world.

This year is the 82nd version of the first major championship of the season, also a sign that spring has arrived in the USA. The Masters is also the only one of the four majors played at the same course every year. Augusta National is a par-72 measuring 7,435 yards. A total of 87 players are set to tee it up starting Thursday, the tournament’s smallest field this century. The Masters always has the smallest field of the majors.

WSOPC Planet Hollywood: Wins for Ben Zamani and Joseph Cheong

It’s a wrap for the World Series of Poker Circuit in Planet Hollywood. Benjamin Zamani won the Main Event, and Joseph Cheong won the High Roller.

Someone took my spot this morning.

I couldn’t believe it.

The place opens at 7.30am. I am usually waiting outside like a lager lout at 11:59 am as Sunday morning is about to spill its guts into Sunday afternoon. Only this morning, I forgot to put the bins out. Ten-minutes it took, but that’s all she needed. And the look she gave me.

Vietnam busts online betting ring as World Cup crackdown looms

Asian nations are ramping up their crackdowns of illegal gambling activity ahead of this summer’s FIFA World Cup betting bonanza.

This week, authorities in Vietnam’s Vinh Phuc province announced the filing of charges against 22 individuals for their association with a betting ring that processed wagers online via the password-protected betting site 3in1bet.com. Six individuals were taken into custody, including the alleged ringleader, Luu Van Nam.

Police said their investigation concluded that the ring had handled wagers worth VND200b (US$8.7m) in the last half of 2017 alone. During their raids, police seized 21 mobile phones, three computers and around VND400m in cash.

The bust follows the much larger bust of a major online gambling operation with ties to the nation’s former top cybercrime cop and a pair of highly successful technology businessmen.

Brazil’s Winfil casino has license revoked over real-money slots

Brazil’s pesky Winfil casino may have been shut down for good following its latest attempt to offer real-money slots play in defiance of local laws.

On March 29, authorities in the city of Porto Alegre in the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul ordered the closure of Winfil, a nightspot operated by Catalan-based gaming operator Grupo Pefaco. Once again, the venue was accused of offering real-money slots play over the strident objections of local authorities.

Winfil launched last October, offering hundreds of slot machines configured to operate in free-play ‘demonstration’ mode only. Before the month was through, police raided the property after getting word that Winfil’s slots were now allowing real-money play. Several hundred of the offending machines were duly confiscated, along with the cash they contained.

Winfil’s attorneys claimed to have received authorization from a local court to make the switch to real-money play, but even the judge who handled the case rejected Winfil’s interpretation of her ruling, saying she’d only suggested that the cops had no authority to confiscate the free-play machines.

Melco Int’l 2017 profit tumbles despite revenue surge

Casino operator Melco International Development Ltd has showered over $5m in new shares on chairman/CEO Lawrence Ho for helping to steer the company to a record performance in 2017.

The Hong Kong-listed Melco turned in its 2017 financial report card last week, reporting revenue up 70% year-on-year to HK$41.2b (US$5.25b), while adjusted earnings shot up 80% to HK$9.8b. However, profits tumbled from HK$10.4b in 2016 to just HK$474m last year.

The profit tumble can be explained by the HK$10.4b one-off gain Melco enjoyed in 2016 via the dissolution of Melco Crown Entertainment, its former joint venture with Australian casino operator Crown Resorts. With Crown’s shares having been purchased and cancelled, Melco is now majority owner of that venture’s successor, Melco Resorts and Entertainment (MRE), which operates casinos in Macau and Manila.

MRE provides the overwhelming majority of Melco’s revenue, and a detailed breakdown of its 2017 performance was released earlier this year. But Melco boss Ho nonetheless expressed relief that MRE’s operations in Macau had overcome “several years of … headwinds,” leaving Melco “a stronger, more focused and better positioned company.”
