Silver Heritage accused of hiring illegal foreign workers in Nepal

Australian-listed casino operator Silver Heritage Group is in hot water in Nepal after its ex-local partner blew the whistle on alleged illegal labor practices inside the Tiger Palace Bhairahawa resort.

The Kathmandu Post reported that Silver Heritage’s former Nepali partner, Rajendra Bajgain, accused the casino operator of hiring 22 foreign nationals in Tiger Palace without securing the necessary working permits from the government.

Under Nepal’s labor code, foreigners who want to work in the country are issued with tourist visas that are valid for 150 days. Within the period, foreigners may be able to apply for a working visa.

Bajgain also claimed that the salaries of these foreign staffers are deposited in Hong Kong-based accounts instead of going through Nepal’s financial institutions. The ex-Silver Heritage partner noted that 17 out of the 22 illegal foreign workers had already left the country after his exposé.

Macau $3.2B March GGR beats analysts’ estimates

Macau casinos roared back to life with a 22-percent increase in gross gaming revenue (GGR) for March, catching many financial analysts by surprise.

Data from the Macau’s Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau (DICJ) showed that Macau raked in a MOP25.9 billion (US$3.2 billion) as a result of a sustained demand for gambling in the former Portuguese enclave.

The latest monthly result placed the market’s accumulated 2018 year-on-year growth at 20.5 percent, or MOP76.51 billion (US$9.46 billion). The March GGR also represents a 6.79 percent improvement from the MOP24.30 billion (US$3 billion) registered in February 2018.

The March GGR exceeded the 13-18 percent growth expectations of different brokerage firms and marked the 20th consecutive month of gains for Macau, following 26 months of year-on-year declines.

Why do grumpy people look so grumpy?

I’m in Starbuck. I’ve just shifted seats into the corner (old poker habit, I don’t want anyone looking at my cards), and I had to dump the mess onto the counter. Grumpy #1 wasn’t happy at all.

I order one of this newfangled tea things. It arrives, looking like something the Loch Ness monster would swim in. I take a sip and swallow a congealed lump of something green. I take it back. Grumpy #2 explains that the fault is mine for requesting almond milk instead of the stuff from the udders.

The Battle for Relegation

Haryana Hawks win MIPL S2; Kundra wants IPL reprieve; Sethi AIGF role

You have to look hard to find it, but the Haryana Hawks have won the Match Indian Poker League Season 2, Raj Kundra is looking for an Indian Premier League reprieve, and Muskan Sethi joins the All India Gaming Federation.

Anyone can win the cup. You learn that from a very young age. You need skill, yes, but the luck element comes through in a good old-fashioned knockout competition.

But a season?

Now, that’s when the elite rise to the top of the food chain.

Bratislava to host non-stop poker festival

For those looking for a change of poker scenery, this could be the perfect answer. The Banco Casino in Bratislava will be holding its first-ever Cash Game Festival (CGF) this week. The series of tournament events will be held in conjunction with Unibet, the online gaming portal.

The non-stop action will take place from April 4 through April 8. Live broadcasts will be provided from both the tables and special events, and can be followed on the Cash Game Festival Twitch channel. There will be a variety of games, including NLHE, Chinese, super dealer’s choice and Pot-Limit Omaha. There will be games with buy-ins ranging from €1-€50.

There will be a second, similar festival of tournaments held in Bratislava later in the month, as well. The Olympic Park Casino in Tallinn will host that series from April 25 through April 29. As with the CGF to be held at the Banco, the games are the same and the buy-ins will also be from €1-€50.

The CGF has its roots in Estonia on the Baltic Sea. The first series was held there in 2014 before expanding to its first international location in 2016. When it made its international debut, it traveled first to Aspers Casino in London before jumping out to the Mediterranean island paradise of Malta. From there, it traveled to Bulgaria before heading back to London before visiting Olympic Park for the final series.

Hong Kong, Macau now joined by ‘bridge of death’

Nine years of construction involving 420,000 tons of steel and more than $15 billion. That’s what it took to create the world’s longest sea bridge, which now connects Hong Kong and Macau over the Pearl River Delta region. If everything goes according to plan, the bridge will be paid for by increased gambling in Macau. If not, at the very least the travel time will have been reduced by a staggering 60%, from four hours to 45 minutes. But first, the bridge has to overcome its name—the bridge of death.

The six-lane, Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge is 34 miles long and includes an underwater tunnel that goes for four miles. It was first conceived back in 1983 and completed in November. Its official inauguration is scheduled for some time this year, but the ribbon-cutting ceremony has yet to be established.

Although it has been touted as a wonder of the modern world, not everyone has been enamored with the project, including the principle planning manager, Gao Xingling. He was recently quoted saying, “There were many nights where I couldn’t fall asleep, because there were too many difficulties during the construction. Linking the 80,000-ton pipes under the sea with watertight technology was the most challenging.”

It’s not called the “bridge of death” for nothing. Hong Kong lawmakers have repeatedly called out the project for the number of fatalities that were seen during the bridge’s construction. In total, 10 deaths and anywhere from 234 to 600 injuries were reported. Many are saying that the price, both in life and economically, was too high for what the bridge would ultimate be able to deliver. Fernando Cheung, a member of Hong Kong’s Labour Party, said during a special meeting at the legislature last year: “The project is known as the ‘bridge of blood and tears’ and we are only talking about the Hong Kong side. We don’t even know what is happening in China. I suppose the situation could be ten times worse than that in Hong Kong.”

3 Barrels: PokerStars SCOOP events in NJ, France & Spain; Staples wins in Reno

3:Barrels of a PokerStars flavour with plans to run Spring Championship of Online Poker Series in New Jersey and the newly formed French/Spanish alliance, and Jaime Staples wins at RunItUp Reno.

I’m walking down the street, dodging dog shit, listening to the Feeling Good Podcast (not feeling very good) when the co-host Fabrice Nye said, “I apologise in advance if the sound quality is poor during this episode, it’s raining outside.”

The heavens opened.

The gods pissed on my head.
