Delaware casinos loving their early sports betting returns

Delaware’s legal sports betting market is off to a roaring start, with one of the state’s three casino sportsbooks emerging as the clear winner.

According to figures issued by the Delaware Lottery, total sports betting handle has hit just over $7m in the first 20 days after Gov. John Carney took the state’s first legal wager on June 5. Carney’s wager marked the first legal single-game wager outside Nevada following the US Supreme Court overturning the federal betting ban in May.

All told, the state’s three operators held $1m of the $7m wagered, for a win rate far in excess of the average 5% hold reported by most books. Scientific Games Corp, which already powered the Delaware Lottery’s parlay sports betting offering, reaped vendor fees of $125k from these winnings.

Carney made his inaugural wager at the Dover Downs Hotel & Casino, which accounted for $1.18m of the state’s betting handle, while the Harrington Raceway took in wagers of just over $590k. But Delaware Park’s sportsbook was the clear wagering winner, handling bets of $5.23m and collecting the lion’s share ($653k) of the betting revenue.

Global financial market turmoil may undermine Macau recovery: report

The looming global trade war and the continued depreciation of the Chinese yuan may stymie the two-year recovery of Asia’s premier gambling hub.

According to Bloomberg, some Chinese high rollers have decided to stay away from Macau for the past two weeks in anticipation of the brewing financial market turmoil that was triggered by the trade tensions between the United States and China.

Junket operator Suncity Group Holdings Ltd. executive director Andrew Lo noted that some of its clients have opted to stay in the sidelines and wait until the market conditions become favorable.

“The market conditions have more uncertainties, including the potential trade war escalation,” Lo said, according to the news outlet. “High rollers are more cautious, betting less or reducing trips to Macau.”

Spanish gov’t slashes iGaming taxes to 20%

The Spanish parliament has implemented a 5 percent tax cut on gross gaming revenues (GGR) of licensed iGaming companies in the country.

Starting July 1, taxes imposed on online gambling operators’ GGR will be reduced from 25 percent to 20 percent after the Spanish parliament approved the country’s 2018 budget, according to the Gambling Insider report.

Taxes on pari-mutuel sports betting is reduced to 20 percent from 22 percent, while taxes on pari-mutuel horse racing and pari-mutuel betting will rise to 20 percent from 15 percent. The new tax rate cut doesn’t include iGaming companies located in the Spanish autonomous cities of Ceuta and Melilla in North Africa, which enjoy 10 percent GGR tax rate.

A recent study conducted by consultancy firm Ficom Leisure forecast Spain’s annual online gambling and betting revenue to hit €1 billion (US$1.22 billion) to €1.5 billion ($1.84 billion) in the next three to five years.

“When the unexpected meets with the unprepared, there we find the greatest astonishments!”

― Mehmet Murat Iklan   (Turkish Playwright)

In the USA, state after state is gearing up to legalize sports betting, following the Supreme Court decision in Murphy v NCAA, which, as we all know, struck down the federal law known as the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA). But even as they do so, a number of unanswered questions are coming home to roost.

Cherry secures Polish sports betting license

According to a press release from the company, Cherry Online Polska, a subsidiary of Cherry AB, is now officially a sports betting entity in Poland. On June 28, the company became the ninth operator to be licensed by the country’s Ministry of Finance (MoF), and only the second to receive a license under the recently implemented sports gambling regulations. While the licensing process lasted six months, Cherry certainly feels that the wait was worthwhile.

In the press release, Patryk Włodarski, a business consultant who submitted the license application on behalf of Cherry, said, “We are proud to be the one of the first companies that were granted the licence. Poland is a fully regulated market and since the 2017 amendment to the gambling bill, it became our priority to obtain a licence, allowing us to offer our services online in full respect to the current laws. Now with a company in Warsaw holding a licence, Cherry is in position to introduce its first online sportsbook brand to the Polish customers very soon.”

In having its license application approved, Cherry joins the ranks of Fortuna, E-Toto, forBET, TotoLotek SA, Milennium, LV Bet and TotalBET, all of which were already issued licenses by the MoF.

New gambling laws in Poland took almost a year to be accepted, finally being approved as of April 1, 2017. They are touted as being the key to freeing the industry and will present attractive opportunities for international operators to launch activities in the country in a regulated environment. The new framework allows for sports betting, casino games, bingo and poker; however, sports betting is the only one that is not monopolized by state-run Totalizator Sprotowy.

Poker pro Eugene Katchalov trades cards for controls in eSports move

Ukraine-born poker pro Eugene Katchalov had a successful run at the tables. He racked up over $9.2 million in live-tournament action before slowly fading out of the limelight. He has still participated in tournaments, but not as often as before. His last cash at a tournament was in the WSOPE NLHE High Roller for One Drop last November, where he made it to 13th place before being eliminated. He now showed up in Vegas for the WSOP Crazy Eights tournament, but struck out before making it to the money. His departure from the felt hasn’t come from boredom, but, rather, an interest in another competitive activity – eSports.

The WSOP bracelet winner and WPT champion has taken a vested interest in eSports, an industry he sees as the future for online competitors. In a Twitter post, he promoted a blog about his activity, saying, “I wrote a short blog about my Poker career and what I’m up to today. Thanks for checking it out!” He also posted a link to the blog, which was published on Twitter and can be found here.

Katchalov, who has always been a fan of video games, talked to PokerNews after being sent to the rail in the Crazy Eights tournament and shared some of his insight. He said that he started to take eSports more seriously about four years ago after becoming good friends with fellow poker pro and eGamer Luca Pagano. Katchalov sees a lot of similarities between eGames and poker, stating, “Especially in terms of competitions and psychology, you can see it on how the kids approach the game in terms of being a poker pro.”

The two competitors began attending more eSports events, including one in Vegas that centered around the game League of Legends. Katchalov said of the event, “There was just so many people and energy in the crowd, even more than what you see in regular sports.”

Jeff Karp tapped to head Aristocrat’s social gaming arm

Last November, Aristocrat purchased Big Fish Gaming (BFG) for almost $1 billion. Since then, the Australian company has invested a lot of resources in expanding its operations, while at the same time also experiencing obstacles. Now, to help the company further its social gaming agenda more, it has turned to an industry expert to lead the way.

Jeff Karp, an executive with a long list of experience in the industry, has been tapped to run the helm of BFG. He has over 15 years’ experience as a senior executive with several companies, including Zynga, Electronic Arts and GSN Games. He has also provided a great deal of assistance in building what became multi-billion-dollar franchise games, including Farmville, Bingo Bash, the entire SIMS franchise, Words With Friends, EA SPORTS, GSN Casino, among others.

Karp moves to BFG from Sports Illustrated Play (SIP), where he held the role of CEO. SIP is a youth sports digital platform that provides sports league management software. SIP was recently acquired by Comcast/NBC and Karp built platforms with the company that supported over 17 million users each month.

In his new position, Karp will serve as the managing director and president of the company, while helping to continue the expansion of BFG around the globe. Aristocrat’s chief digital/chief strategy officer, Jeff Goldstein, said, “I am delighted to welcome Jeff Karp to Big Fish. Jeff’s expertise in growing games into global entertainment franchises is unsurpassed. His proven track record and deep experience in the games industry make him the ideal person to drive Big Fish’s growth strategy, and ensure the business delivers its full potential.”
