Yokohama citizens thumb down casino resort in the city

A whopping 94% of Yokohama residents have a negative opinion on the idea of putting up a casino resort in the city, according to a GGR Asia report.

This was based on a survey conducted by the Yokohama City government from May 14 to June 22 regarding the city’s “mid-term, four-year plan.” The survey involved 830 respondents who were asked about a range of topics on public policy, where about 20% of opinions provided had to do with the hosting of a casino resort.

It was only last July that the Japanese Diet passed the Integrated Resorts (IR) Implementation Bill, which provided for the building of three large-scale gaming venues in as-yet undetermined locations. The bill had its share of opposition, and the dip in Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s popularity last June was attributed to his government’s push for the bill’s enactment.

A 2017 study by Japanese brokerage Nomura looked at Yokohama, along with Osaka, as ideal spots for construction of integrated resorts, due to a large flow of tourists, wherein gross gaming revenue generated by casinos was estimated at $7 billion.

Intertops, Juicy Stakes Casino offer Malta Poker Festival satellite tourneys

Select players of the online poker portals Intertops Poker and Juicy Stakes Casino could be in a seat at the Malta Poker Festival (MPF) in November. The sites are offering a chance for several lucky winners to earn a trip to participate in the NHLE Grand Event, which will run from Nov. 1-6 at the Portomaso Casino and offers a guaranteed prize pool of €500,000.

Beginning Sept. 5, the sites will run four satellite tournaments daily. The tournament champions will win a prize package worth $2,500 that includes the event buy-in, a 5-night stay at the Hilton Malta Resort, two tickets for an exclusive MPF VIP Player party, travel money and additional gear.

The MPF has its starts in the Battle of Malta (BOM) tournament. However, a legal dispute with the owners of the BOM brand forced the event founder, Ivonne Montealegre, to change the name. In announcing the MPF, Montealegre stated, “With an operation like the one we have at Portomaso Casino, breaking records for the past seven years, it makes sense to take the tournament to the next level. We have been listening to our clients and have recalibrated the entire operation to focus on good quality poker in the most spectacular destination in Malta.”

According to tournament director Danilo de Bernardis, the Portomaso is the only casino that could be considered for this type of event. He said when the MPF was first announced, “Portomaso Casino is the only venue on the island capable of hosting an event of this magnitude. We have both the manpower and the facilities to create a comfortable, ethical, and professional environment to conduct an unforgettable poker experience. Our team is as strong as it gets after working together for 7 years.”

Denmark approves MRG for sports betting

Online gaming operator MRG has been given the green light to start offering sports betting in Denmark, according to a press release.

MRG CEO Per Norman said, “It’s great that we now can introduce our strong Sportsbook offering also in Denmark.” The company already has a sportsbook license in Ireland. Two weeks ago, MRG, through its newly acquired iGaming company 11.lv, also signed a multiyear extension of a contract with Gaming Innovation Group for provision of odds-making tools and other sports-betting services.

The company already operates iGaming sites bingosjov.dk and bingoslottet.dk in Denmark. Only last December, the Danish government granted MRG a casino license. “The company’s casino has grown quickly and is a success in Denmark,” MRG said in its statement.

MRG is known for its brands such as Mr Green, Redbet and MamaMiaBingo. The company’s revenue for the first half of 2018 was $86.7 million, 40.8% higher than the same period in 2017, with earnings before interest, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA) of $10 million.

Canada’s eSports tournament creates its own cryptocurrency

A Canadian eSports company is the latest to try and offer its own cryptocurrency. Canada Cup is introducing the eSports ecosystem (ESE) digital token (because, apparently, it couldn’t be creative enough to come up with a unique name), which will reportedly empower all gamers through the creation of a digital eSports currency specifically for the community.

ESE will offer a medium to transfer value, reward both casual and professional players and compliment the current fiat-based payout structure. The token is designed, as described by Canada Cup, to fill a gap that prevents a number of casual gamers from being rewarded for their participation.

ESE token holders can passively earn more tokens through Canada Cup’s “staking rewards” program. This will provide an additional income source to both gamers and organizers, which will help them finance future participation. An ESE Loyalty Nodes program is also anticipated, and is designed to provide stability to the token award program above and beyond the passive awards users can accumulate. The staking rewards and Loyalty Nodes programs won’t be ready until sometime during the first quarter of next year.

A community wallet, representing 17% of the token’s initial supply, will be used to give back to the community. It will offer a variety of prize pools, player and team sponsorships, scholarships, charity donations and eSports advertisements.

College Football week 2 betting preview

Week 1 around college football was chock-full of marquee matchups, but Week 2 is a bit of a downer in that regard with one game standing apart as ranked Pac-12 foes USC and Stanford meet on the “Farm” in what could be a Pac-12 Championship Game preview.

Odds courtesy of OddsShark.com

The Cardinal are 4.5-point favorites despite going 0-2 against the Trojans last year, losing in Los Angeles and then in the Pac-12 title game. Both schools won their season openers. Stanford beat San Diego State despite just 29 yards rushing on 18 carries by preseason Heisman favorite Bryce Love. Southern Cal beat UNLV as true freshman J.T. Daniels looked polished in throwing for 282 yards and a touchdown.

Another good matchup is Clemson at Texas A&M. The two head coaches, the Tigers’ Dabo Swinney and the Aggies’ Jimbo Fisher, know each other very well from all those Clemson-Florida State wars in the ACC. Fisher left Tallahassee for A&M after last season. Swinney has a bit of a QB controversy on his hands because true freshman Trevor Lawrence outplayed senior starter Kelly Bryant in the opening blowout of cupcake Northwestern State. Swinney says both will play again. Clemson is -12.

The Mouthpiece: Everybody wants to regulate sports betting

“Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it is time to pause and reflect.”

 Mark Twain

There have been many twists and turns since the U.S. Supreme Court overturned the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA) in the recent case of NCAA v Murphy. Some were new twists and turns, some were not, but together they make a very interesting picture.

Strange bedfellows

Master Classics of Poker coming to Amsterdam

The 2018 Master Classics of Poker (MCOP) is a little more than two months away and it’s time to start making plans. The series of events will be held at the Holland Casino in Amsterdam from November 21 through December 1 and this year will see a first for the NLHE events. They will all use the big blind ante format, following a trend seen lately in the poker world.

This will be the 27th year that the MCOP has been held. There will be a total of 21 events, including a number of high-stakes games. There is a €10,300 High Roller tourney on top, as well as a €25,500 Super High Roller event. Other tournaments are available with buy-ins ranging from €330 for a Main Event satellite to €1,100 for a NLH Hyper Turbo Freezeout. The €4,500 Main Event will wrap up on November 30.

Last year’s Main Event champ is Claas Segebrecht out of Germany. He outlasted a field of 285 entries to take the title and pocket over €235,000 (US$272,157). It was his second largest purse after the $468,594 he took home when he came in fourth at the 2014 WSOP Monster Stack.

The usual suspects will be included this year. There are several NLHE tournaments with variations, Pot Limit Omaha events and bounties. A number of the tournaments are single-entry events, while many others allow for one re-entry.
