Finnish teen that scammed Malta gambling site sentenced

The Finnish teenager who scammed a six-figure sum from a Malta-based online gambling site has been convicted, along with his parents.

Last month, Finland media reported on the bizarre case of an unidentified 16-year-old male Finn who’d discovered a glitch in the unidentified gambling site’s software that allowed him to cancel other gamblers’ withdrawal requests and redirect the outgoing cash to his online wallet.

YLE News reported that the teen appeared in Häme District Court on Monday to receive his suspended sentence of 20 months. The teen apparently got off lucky due to the fact that he was a minor at the time the crimes were committed between April and May 2017.

The YLE report also appeared to lower the total amount that was scammed from the site. Originally reported as over €250k, Monday’s article indicated that the teen was ordered to repay €132k and to pay €3k to cover the gambling operator’s legal fees.

DraftKings wins court order to unmask DDoS attackers

Daily fantasy / sports betting operator DraftKings is taking legal action to unmask the perpetrators of a distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack against its website.

Last Thursday, DraftKings filed a complaint with the US District Court for Massachusetts alleging that 10 unidentified defendants launched a DDoS assault that knocked DraftKings’ website offline for 26 minutes on August 8. The company insisted that no confidential company or customer data was accessed during the attack.

DraftKings traced the source of the data bombardment to a number of internet service providers (ISP), and asked the court for the right to subpoena these ISPs to uncover the identities behind the IP addresses that launched the attacks.

DraftKings says the first DDoS attack came on August 7, but the company’s digital defenses were able to blunt this attack. A larger attack was launched the following day that involved three times the normal volume of requests the site usually handles.

Kenya MPs reject proposal to cut gambling tax from 35% to 15%

Kenya’s betting operators have lost their latest attempt to roll back the nation’s new 35% tax on gambling revenue.

On Saturday, local media outlet Daily Nation reported that members of parliament had voted against a proposed amendment to the country’s Finance Bill that would have reduced the 35% tax on gambling revenue to 15% while also reducing gambling operators’ payments to social causes.

On January 1, Kenya’s new uniform 35% tax on all gambling revenue kicked in, creating a harsh new economic reality for the nation’s betting, lottery, gaming and competition operators, who previously paid tax rates as low as 5% (lotteries) or 7.5% (betting).

State treasurer Henry Rotich was said to have personally lobbied MPs last week to reject the amendment recommended by the National Finance and Planning committee. Rotich’s efforts wouldn’t have come as much of a surprise, given that he originally supported a 50% gambling tax before cooler heads prevailed.

Union Gaming raises Macau’s GGR forecast on better results

Gross gaming revenue (GGR) in Macau has risen 17.5% and is now at $3.3 billion according to the city’s gaming regulator, DICJ (for its Portuguese initials). This has been helped by better weather this over last, which saw Typhoon Hato decimate various parts of Asia, as well as an additional day in the year. The improved performance has led to Union Gaming revising its third-quarter forecast and expects things to get even better going forward.

Grant Govertsen, an analyst with Union Gaming, indicates that gaming volumes in Macau have remained positive for the six weeks following the FIFA World Cup competition. He adds that mass market gaming is still on track to increase by more than 20% and VIP gaming increases will probably remain the same as they have been, around the 15% mark.

Govertsen asserts that there is “cause for optimism” based on the strong performance seen last month. Additionally, he states, “While last year’s weather, which included two big typhoons within one week of each other, made for a very favorable calendar this August and hence nice [year-on-year growth], the reality is that the absolute level of GGR this August was the highest of the entire year, and only second to February (benefiting from Chinese New Year) on a GGR/day basis. This is cause for optimism as trends have accelerated into the end of summer.”

The analyst continues, “Based on recent conversations we’ve had with VIP junkets, we get the sense that business remains good and is maintaining a mid-teens trajectory despite fears to the contrary. To date, there has been no negative reaction (or even precautions) taken by VIP customers as it relates to trade wars and the potential impacts thereof. By and large, VIP and other premium customers have not changed trip frequency or their wallet size.”

Sinitic and Goldblue target customer service pain points for Asian iGaming operators

iGaming customer support in Asia faces unique challenges. First, there is a wide variety of languages and dialects spoken throughout the region. There’s also the preference for instant chat-based support, and the growing number of iGaming brands spanning these languages. Another issue is the secondary use of support agents for direct sales across these brands, invariably need to use multiple aliases.

It’s not shock that customer support costs currently make up between 50% and 60% of an Asian iGaming company’s Costs of Goods Sold. This high cost is due to these unique market factors, especially since companies tend to centralize their operations in the few regulated markets, which, in turn, requires importing a large number of staff for multilingual customer support teams.

The usual pain points for customer support of an Asian iGaming operator include registration and signup abandonment, deposit and transaction completion, and Know-Your-Customer (KYC) problems.

Natural language processing (NLP) company Sinitic addresses these pain points for Asian-facing iGaming operators with its artificial intelligence (AI)-enabled chatbots — conversational assistants that aid human customer support staff — which allow businesses to control and even reduce these operational costs while expanding profits.
