EPL Gameweek #23 review

With a full EPL schedule taking place this midweek, it was vital that the weekend brought a victory. Amazingly, just half of the games resulted in any win at all, with clubs such as Tottenham, West Ham, Everton and Arsenal all drawing. That left the door open for other clubs to thrive, however.

Norwich managed to get a vital win against Bournemouth to prolong their bid for survival into the New Year and Burnley triumphed over an out of sorts Leicester side missing the midfield protection of Wilfred Ndidi at Turf Moor. Elsewhere, some ribbons were almost applied to the Premier League trophy itself, as Manchester City’s stumbling draw at home to Crystal Palace was punished by Jurgen Klopp’s might Liverpool side.

Southampton 2-3 Wolverhampton Wanderers

To appreciate just how good a job Nuno Espirito Santo has done at Wolverhampton Wanderers is to simply look at the table in awed wonder. The Portuguese manager has guided Wolves to the same points total as Manchester United with considerably less of a net spend. Not only that, but the Midlands side have a vibrant, attacking spirit about them that is breathtaking to watch at times, and all this in their first season in European competition for some years.

Detroit casinos set new revenue record for second straight year

Detroit’s three commercial casinos set a new gaming revenue record in 2019 while the state continues to prepare for the imminent launch of legal sports betting.

Figures released Tuesday by the Michigan Gaming Control Board show Detroit’s three casinos generated combined gaming revenue of $1.454b in 2019, beating the previous record of $1.44b set just one year earlier. The three casinos closed out the year by posting revenue of $127.8m in December, up a mere 0.3% from the same month last year.

MGM Resorts’ MGM Grand Detroit enjoyed a property revenue record in 2019 with $623.5m, up 0.7% from 2018, its previous high-water mark. The privately held MotorCity Casino enjoyed its own record-setting performance last year with revenue of $493.6m, up 0.8% from 2018.

Greektown, which is owned by a combination of Penn National Gaming and VICI Properties, saw its 2019 haul rise 0.6% year-on-year to $337.2m, although this failed to eclipse Greektown’s previous best of $352.8m set way back in 2011.

A look at the EPL history between Chelsea and Arsenal

This week sees a classic fixture come to us like a present we weren’t expecting, in a midweek Premier League game. Midweek EPL Fixtures are special anyway. There always seems to be a shock result, goals seem to fly in and, of course, it all happens under the lights.

Back in the day, the English Premier League’s classic fixtures numbered few. Arsenal and Manchester United wasn’t really a huge rivalry yet, while Liverpool v United was a mismatch, the Red Devils too good for their North-West foes. Manchester City were rarely in the Premier League.

The Early Days of a Capital Classic

Chelsea vs. Arsenal was always tasty. A year into Arsene Wenger’s tenure at Highbury & The Emirates, Arsenal travelled to Chelsea with players such as Gus Poyet, Dennis Wise and Graeme Le Saux in their team welcoming an Arsenal side marshalled by Patrick Viera and led by a fearsome partnership between Ian Wright and Dennis Bergkamp up front.

Super Bowl 54 Niners vs. Chiefs: Odds & trends

In Super Bowl LIV on February 2 in Miami, the AFC champion Kansas City Chiefs and NFC champion San Francisco 49ers will meet in a postseason game for the first time ever. The Chiefs are back in the big game for the first time in 50 years – that’s the longest time in between Super Bowl appearances in league history. The 49ers, meanwhile, look to tie the New England Patriots and Pittsburgh Steelers with a record sixth Super Bowl title.

Odds courtesy of OddsShark.com

Kansas City opened as a 1.5-point favorite and all indications are that the early money is on Patrick Mahomes and Co. There have only been three other Super Bowls where the spread was 1.5 points or fewer. The last was SB XLIX when the Seattle Seahawks were -1 and lost to the New England Patriots 28-24 on a last-second interception at the Pats’ goal line.

The 49ers were not challenged in either of their two playoff games, easily handling both the Minnesota Vikings and Green Bay Packers. This will be the first time this postseason that San Francisco is an underdog. It has lost seven straight playoff games (1-6 ATS) as a dog away from home; obviously not a true road game, but Kansas City is the designated home team in Miami.

Scottish coach confesses to gambling problem, partnerships at risk

A January 30 hearing will determine the fate of Hamilton Academical head coach Brian Rice, as he has reported himself to the Scottish FA for violating the league’s rules regarding betting. This comes after Rice acknowledged that he had relapsed as he has been recovering from a gambling addiction.

According to the SFA, Rice self-disclosed his violations to the agency, acknowledging that he bet on football contests between July 2015 and October 2019. In a statement provided by the head coach, he acknowledged that it seemed the sensible thing to do was to come forward and report his violation:

“I wrote a letter to the Scottish FA self-reporting my gambling and did so as an admission that my disease has returned, in order that I commit to recovery. I have apologized to those at the club in whom I have sought counsel and I apologize today to the players, fans, and colleagues I have let down through my gambling addiction.”

Despite the violation, Hamilton is standing by their coach. Chairman Allan Maitland acknowledged being informed of the violation but stated that they were intending to help Rice “through this” process.

Super Bowl LIV prop bets – a look at the odd odds

Super Bowl LIV will be held on February 2 and the biggest NFL game of the year is poised to see a lot of action, both on and off the field. The championship game is always the biggest sports gambling event in the U.S. and, now that more states have legalized the activity, even more money is expected to flow through sportsbooks across the country. Gamblers aren’t just looking at whether or not the San Francisco 49ers can beat the Kansas City Chiefs and by how much, but also some odd prop bets that are spicing things up.

Jennifer Lopez, better known as J-Lo, is set to perform during the halftime show this year and is the center of attention in more ways than one. Gamblers can take a chance on a little “butt cleavage” action, with BetOnline oddsmakers strongly believing that no risqué shots will be seen. The odds of J-Lo revealing “minor exposure of the buttocks and the intergluteal cleft between them, often because of low-rise pants” is getting -1000 that it won’t happen, and +500 that it will. Putting up a little money on it happening could prove lucrative, in more ways than one.

J-Lo is also getting odds on which song she’ll sing first. Some of the options include Let’s Get Loud, On The Floor, Get Right and Waiting For Tonight. Chances are, just like the odds aren’t good for butt cleavage, her song Booty won’t be in the lineup.

Take a piece of the action on the coin toss. This is always a favorite with gamblers and, even though there’s a 50-50 chance of making the right call, tails deserve a little more attention. Tails have won out 53% of the time and five of the past six Super Bowls. Right now, each is getting -105.

An open letter to Dominic Cummings on the UK gambling credit card ban

I hope you’re reading this, Dominic Cummings. You recently came out with a blog post looking for assorted weirdos to help out with a complete overhaul of Downing Street. I applied under the “weirdo” title just for the hell of it. I’m writing to you now because you seem to have a brain and can listen. I’ve been waiting for someone like you to take the reins behind the scenes for years – someone with a deep mistrust of the political establishment and the strategic strength of mind of to take it on with courage. Your goal to flip the U.K. government on its head and gut Downing Street is exciting, and I’m watching your moves with much interest. Please don’t mess this up, Cummings.

I’m pretty lousy at a lot of things, but one thing I’m exceptionally good at is spotting dishonesty and policy sleight-of-hand. Here I’m talking about a new directive by the Gambling Commission to ban gambling with credit cards by April. Let’s talk about that in the broader context of the casino that nearly all capital markets have become over the last 12 years. Admittedly, the issue of whether punters can use their credit cards for gaming is a relatively minor one, but nevertheless it epitomizes what you and your team need to be on the lookout for in a broader sense in the years to come, if you are to have even a slim chance of success.

If gutting and cutting dangerous bureaucracies is your modus operandi, and I sincerely hope that it is, I recommend that you get rid of the Gambling Commission entirely. If you can’t do that outright because of the political repercussions to your boss, then at least defang the thing, let them write their reports and recommendations, let them keep their paychecks so they don’t whine too loudly, tell them reassuringly that you’re considering everything they say, and then feed all of it through a paper shredder.

Let’s go over this little announcement of theirs with a blunt-tooth comb. We need not even waste a fine-tooth comb on it. Or better yet, a rusty fork out of a dumpster will suffice. The key justification for this credit card ban is the following paragraph:
