Minnesota Lottery’s online scratchers in the sights of new anti-online legislation

The Minnesota Lottery’s first-in-the-nation online scratch tickets appear headed for a fall after state legislators advanced bills intended to bring the lottery offline. On Wednesday, the House Commerce and Regulatory Reform committee approved two bills that would kill the online scratchers and scuttle another lottery program allowing ticket sales at automatic teller machines and gas station pumps.

Neither bill would affect the Lottery’s ability to sell online tickets for draw games such as Powerball or MegaMillions. But state pols believe the online scratchers, which debuted last February, represented an overreach by lottery officials. Rep. Tim Sanders, who authored one of the bills, said the online launch was the result of a “lottery-gone-wild” and those damnned uppity officials “need to have authorization” in order to offer new products.

Lottery director Ed Van Petten has always maintained that launching the scratchers was within his mandate. But he struck a more conciliatory tone on Wednesday, telling legislators his office had “learned our lesson” and that he wanted to “work with this legislature” to avoid future squabbles. Van Petten proposed alternative language that would require legislative okay for future launches of new products.

But Van Petten remains opposed to ending the online experiment, saying cancelling the online scratchers would cost the state sorely needed revenue. There’s also the issue of compensation for technology provider Scientific Games Corp, who have said they would likely sue for over $4m in unrealized revenue if the state prematurely scrapped the scratchers.

Van Petten said online sales accounted for about 1% of total lottery sales, while the ATM and gas pump options have brought in less than $50k. There are 135 locations offering ATM sales and 58 gas stations currently pumping out lottery tickets.

Politicians passed similar legislation by wide majorities last year but Gov. Mark Dayton vetoed the bill once the legislative session had concluded, leaving politicians with no recourse but to wait until 2015. Dayton believed Van Petten deserved the opportunity to prove his case that the online scratchers were a promotional tool that would boost, not cannibalize, retail sales. Shortly before Christmas, Van Petten offered evidence that backed up his predictions, but legislators aren’t listening and Dayton is powerless to stop them this time.

Minnesota is one of just four US states currently offering some form of online sales. Illinois went first, followed by Georgia, while Michigan went live last year. Kentucky is promising to launch its own iLottery this year.

Wink Bingo – The Art of Rebranding

This is a guest contribution by Wink Bingo & Winkly Magazine’s Marketing Manager Eitan Gorodetsky. If you would like to submit a contribution please contact Bill Beatty for submission details. Thank you.

Branding is one thing, rebranding is another.

The first is all about who you want to be. A new company trying to establish itself in the marketplace has to cultivate an appearance, creating an impression of what it’s about even as it’s in the process of discovering that for itself. It’s about finding out what the customer wants, and the ways in which you can communicate that that’s what you’re all about. It’s tricky; a deceptively complex hurdle that trips up a lot of fledgling companies.

Rebranding is very different. For an established company it’s not about forecasting what you want to be about, it’s about recognising and demonstrating what you’re already about. When your brand already means something then any attempt to change its presentation has to first and foremost address those pre-existing values. Accurately represent the idea of your business and customers will see the truth behind the aesthetic, but miss the mark and you risk turning them away in droves.

Wink Bingo is one of the longest standing bingo brands in the country, and a name that instantly springs to mind when you think of online bingo. When we began the rebranding process we knew that alongside top quality gaming our customers chose us because we provided a specific look and feel that other sites didn’t. The mission was to build our new look around those unique factors.

Extensive research gave us the three core features of our brand:

Penn National, Mohegan Sun results; Maryland casinos swap slots for tables

Regional casino operator Penn National Gaming lost $250.4m in Q4, but the numbers were laid low by a $316.5m non-cash impairment charge. The company, which operates 26 gaming facilities across 16 US states and one Canadian province, reported revenue of $651.4m (+!%) while earnings fell nearly a quarter to $64m in the three months ending Dec. 31. For 2014 as a whole, revenue fell over 11% to $2.56b, while earnings tumbled nearly 60% to $285.1m.

Discounting the effect of that impairment charge, Penn CEO Timothy Wilmott heralded his company’s Q4 performance, which was also negatively impacted by $4.3m in unplanned lobbying expenses ahead of the Massachusetts casino referendum. Wilmott said Penn’s new slots parlor in Plainsville is set to open in June and the $360m Hollywood Casino-branded property outside San Diego on the Jamul Indian Village land will open in mid-2016.

MOHEGAN SUN’S FIRST REVENUE GAIN IN THREE YEARS

The Mohegan Tribal Gaming Authority (MTGA) reported a healthy turnaround in its fiscal Q1. Revenue in the three months ending Dec. 31 nudged up 1.2% to $316.7m, which sounds minimal until you realize it’s the largest gain since Q1 2012. The MTGA operates its flagship casino in Connecticut and the new Mohegan Sun Pocono in Pennsylvania, which just completed its first full year of operation. The MTGA also manages the Resorts Casino Hotel in Atlantic City.

Slot revenue was basically flat at $197.9m but table games were up 4.6% to $79m. The $14.8m in quarterly profit was a welcome change from the $67.3m loss in the same period the previous year, which was saddled with a $62.1m debt payment. Cost cutting was a big factor in this quarter’s profit, as the company has about 400 fewer employees from the same time last year.

MTGA CEO Mitchell Etess told analysts that “one quarter does not make a trend” but the company was “nonetheless encouraged” by the results. The MTGA will soon break ground on a second hotel in Connecticut, adding 400 rooms to its existing 1,200. Etess said the property is often forced to turn guests away because they’re fully booked, resulting in “hundreds of thousands” of missed booking opportunities over the course of a year.

WSOP Drop PokerNews as the 2015 WSOP Live Reporting Team of Choice

PokerNews lovers will have a sour face this morning as news break out that the World Series of Poker will be looking to take their live reporting in-house for the summers festival.

In a move that can be viewed as either ballsy or backward, the World Series of Poker (WSOP) have decided to say thanks, but no thanks, to the PokerNews live reporting team when it comes to this summer’s spectacular.

The eyeballs at F5Poker were more focused than most as they spotted the following tweet from Matthew Parvis, Head of Content at IBus Media (PokerNews).

As we won’t be doing official live coverage what are some features you want to see on @PokerNews during the WSOP?

— Matthew Parvis (@MatthewParvis) January 27, 2015

They reached out to WSOP Vice-President of Corporate Communications, Seth Palansky, to confirm the tweet, and the hand went up to do just that. PokerNews will not be bringing you the blow-by-blow account of the 2015 WSOP.

So why the change of heart?

SWAT Team Raids Poker Game in Great Falls

A SWAT team has raided a well-known poker game in Great Falls, Virginia, making eight arrests, and seizing $150,000 in the process.

Attorney General Eric Holder’s decision to change the controversial ‘Equitable Sharing’ Civil Forfeiture law is going to have one of its first high profile tests after a SWAT team from the Fairfax County Police Department burst into a poker game in Great Falls and allegedly seized over $150,000 from the players, and host, of the game.

The reason a Civil Forfeiture case may well result, is those initially charged have been told that if they stay clean for six months, the gambling charges will be dropped. The money, however, will not be returning to the owners. A stipulation of the deal is that 40% of the money will remain with the police department.

Reports suggest that the game is not exactly a secret. The Washington Post suggested that Phil Laak and Antonio Esfandiari have played in the game that allows a minimum buy-in of $20,000, and rebuys when the first $20,000 has bitten the dust.

The alleged crime (as a UK citizen I find this laughable) is a Class 3 misdemeanor of illegal gambling. The word ‘illegal’ stands up here because there was a 1.5% rake to pay for dealers and assistants such as waiters and massage therapists.

Only eight of the ten players were arrested after ski mask, rifle-toting policeman raided the room shouting, “Does anyone have a weapon?” And asking for people to lay their hands down on the table. The rumors that someone had to lay down a Royal Flush have not yet been clarified, and thank God a ski mask wearing Phil Laak wasn’t actually playing or all hell would have broken loose.

The reason only eight players were arrested is because one lucky bleeder was waiting for a seat, whilst another ‘new’ player to the game is believed to be an ‘informant’. The Washington Post reports that this individual was interviewed separately and later not charged.

Japanese porn stars big draw for rich Chinese businessmen in Macau

Macau casinos hold little appeal for Hong Kong residents these days, at least, according to recent visitation stats. The number of overall visitors to Macau may have risen 7.5% in 2014 but those coming from Hong Kong fell 5%. Hong Kong visitor numbers peaked in 2011 at over 7m, falling to just 6.43m last year.

Macao Government Tourist Office Maria Helena de Senna Fernandes believes the thrill of the new is wearing off for Hong Kong’s gamblers. “They might have fresh interests in coming to Macau a few years ago when many big projects were opened” but now these same tourists are wondering “what can still attract them.”

Recent studies have revealed how the phenomenon of ‘adaptability’ has resulted in lower rates of pathological gambling in Macau. The study’s authors warned that the two new major projects opening in 2016 – Melco Crown Entertainment’s Studio City and Phase 2 of Galaxy Entertainment’s Galaxy Macau– may temporarily boost the problem gambling numbers and they may also give some life to Hong Kong’s tourist numbers.

Some enterprising women have done their part to provide Macau with a dose of the new – or possibly just the dose for some of their customers. The Shukan Taishu reported that many Japanese adult video (AV) actresses are making regular trips to Macau to offer wealthy Chinese businessmen the chance to sleep with the girl of their video dreams.

A source told the paper that Japanese starlets are hired by brokers who ferry the girls to Macau and set them up in five-star hotels. There they stay for a ten-day period, during which time the girls are expected to service up to five clients per day. For this, they receive a minimum of ¥500k (US $4,200) ranging up to ¥2m, with bonuses paid in the event of a three-way.

Prostitution schemes are nothing new in Macau, as evidenced by the recent bust of Stanley Ho’s nephew. The Shukan Taishu’s source said on average, blonde Russian girls fetch the top prices while most Asian girls are (not quite) dime a dozen. But Japanese AV stars “are at another level – they are extraordinary.”

Japanese porn is immensely popular in China and rich businessmen “come [to Macau] with the one intention of sleeping with these girls.” One star prompted a rich client from Beijing to bring along his collection of DVDs featuring the actress so that he could recreate certain scenes, which hopefully didn’t include any in the bukkake genre, cuz that would be one nasty cleanup for the maids.

Turkish political party denies it’s a front for illegal gambling

Where there’s a will, gamblers will find a way. On Jan. 9, police in Turkey raided the provincial headquarters of a political party, detaining 12 individuals, including the party’s leader Öztürk Sezer. The authorities claim the Raising of the Nationalist Will Party (MIY) is not a political movement but a front for illegal gambling activity, specifically, bingo games.

The raid in Adana province resulted in 238 individuals being fined for gambling offenses, while others were charged with earning money for providing a venue for illegal gambling activity. The Hurriyet Daily News quoted a police official saying they’d found vouchers in the office of MIY’s provincial chief indicating that MIY had paid the fines imposed on gamblers from previous raids.

This was the third raid of a MIY establishment this year and the 11th since it was founded in late 2014. MIY began life following the demise in September of the Trust Party, whose establishments were raided 44 times under similar circumstances. Despite the harassment, Trust would regroup after each raid and carry on as normal, as only the nation’s Supreme Court has the power to completely shut down a political party’s activity.

Following the Jan. 9 raid, Sezer did his best Claude Rains from Casablanca “Shocked!” routine, claiming he was only at the provincial HQ because he was “curious when I read media stories that people gambled in my party. I was waiting for the provincial head and then the police came in.” Turkey’s legal gambling options include a national lottery and some sports betting but other forms of gambling are strictly forbidden.

Meanwhile, the country’s Directorate General for Religious Affairs (Diyanet) has attempted to clarify whether Islam frowns on gift draws. In a fatwa issued earlier this month, Diyanet doubled down on its stance that the lottery is forbidden for Muslims because it involves some people winning money while others lose. But gift draws organized by shops, which require no upfront payment to qualify for a prize, are acceptable.

Shifting topics, the fatwa said Turkish men should stop wearing earrings because it would make them effeminate. Most non-Muslims might say the same thing about men playing bingo. But hey, whatever floats your fez.

Rank Group online profit jumps 75%, inks platform deal with Bede Gaming

UK-listed gaming operator Rank Group posted decent profit gains in its fiscal H1 despite only a modest growth in revenue. The company reported revenue of £361.7m in the six months ending Dec. 31, up less than 3% over the same period the previous year. But earnings rose 14.5% to £62.1m and operating profit rose by a quarter to £40.8m.

Rank’s Grosvenor Casinos drove the gains, with revenue rising 6% to £205.6m. The Mecca bingo brand was flat at £143.3m while the Spanish-facing Enracha bingo brand dipped by a fifth to £12.8m. Overall operating profit would have been much higher were it not for £14m in costs stemming largely from Rank’s efforts to beef up its online infrastructure.

Rank’s online operations reported revenue up 16% and operating profit up 75% year-on-year. Grosvenor’s online operations saw revenue surge over 70% to £9.9m, while turning in an operating profit of £1.9m versus a £900k loss in the comparable period a year ago. Mecca’s digital revenue rose a more modest 5.7% to £31.5m but profit rose nearly 24% to £8.4m. Nearly two-thirds of Mecca customers play via mobile devices, generating 37% of Mecca revenue.

Rank also announced it was shifting its core online platform to one provided by Bede Gaming, who beat out incumbent OpenBet for the contract. However, OpenBet will remain a key content provider for Rank and will continue to provide its remote gaming server for specific game integrations.

The Rank deal marks the first ‘tier one’ operator deal for the Newcastle-based Bede, which currently serves over 20 casino and bingo sites and won Bingo Supplier of the Year at the most recent eGaming Review Awards. The deal allows Rank the option of taking an equity stake in Bede via a convertible loan.

Rank says it plans to sequentially migrate all three of its brands to the Bede platform, with the first brand to accomplish the move this year. The new platform will allow the introduction of new games content from IGT, Playtech, Bally, WMS, Novomatic and other firms. Rank’s H2 plans include the formation of a shared digital marketing team and a single digital agency for all three brands. Former William Hill and Ladbrokes veteran Colin Cole-Johnson was recently appointed to tne newly created role of Group Director of Digital and Cross Channel Services.

Revel gets big tax breaks; ratings agencies dump on Atlantic City

It took almost three years and numerous trips to bankruptcy court, but finally, Revel was on the receiving end of some good news. The former Atlantic City casino reached a settlement with the city that will reduce its property tax assessment for 2015 from $625 million to $225 million. Likewise, its quarterly tax payments, which are due this weekend, have been reduced from almost $10 million to just under $2 million while its municipal tax rate for the year could drop from under $40 million to $7.5 million.

Chris Filiciello, a spokesman for Atlantic City Mayor Don Guardian, defended the settlement from critics angered by the way AC’s casinos have successfully appealed their tax payments, depriving local municipalities of badly needed revenue.

To quell the growing concern, state lawmakers are laying out a plan that would allow casinos to make payments in lieu of taxes for 15 years in exchange for dropping plans to file tax appeals. This proposal would give casinos cost certainty in advance while also ensuring the city a guaranteed revenue stream.

According to Filiceillo, if the senate approves the alternative payment plan, Revel’s tax settlement would become a moot point after the first quarter payment of $2 million is received.

CREDIT AGENCIES TAKE AC TO THE WOODSHED

Meanwhile, AC’s financial struggles led two credit ratings agencies to lower their ratings for the city. Moody’s Investors Service was the first to take action, cutting its rating six notches deeper into junk territory. A few days later, Standard & Poor’s Ratings Services took a similar step, cutting its rating four notches to junk at ‘BB’.

The two rating agencies are particularly concerned by New Jersey Governor Chris Christie taking the unprecedented step of appointing an emergency management team for the city and ordering it to consider the possibility of debt restructuring through bankruptcy.

Forged document puts spotlight on bingo parlor in PH’s summer capital

The Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corp. (PAGCOR) has found itself indirectly involved in another controversy after documents signed by city officials in Baguio City allowing the opening of an electronic bingo parlor were found to be erroneous.

The documents, which were “endorsed” by Mayor Mauricio Domogan, indicated that the city did not object to the opening of the bingo parlor last year. But the documents have now been deemed a “misrepresentation of the city government’s position.”

Vice Mayor Edison Bilog revealed earlier this week that the resolution, dated March 25, 2014, was actually fake and contained forged signatures from Bilog himself.

According to a separate document, Domogan wrote to PAGCOR chair Cristino Naguiat Jr on April 14, 2014, endorsing the company’s application to operate e-bingo in Baguio. Such a document is required to be submitted to PAGCOR, although gaming applicants could also attach forms of certificates of no objections from communities in the event actual certifications can’t be produced. Domogan was reportedly misled into believing that the resolution was legitimate.

Councilor Betty Lourdes Tabanda claimed the resolution, which carried a note that read “duly received by the council,” was never actually approved by the city council. Tabanda pointed out that the date the resolution supposedly passed couldn’t have happened because that was a Tuesday and the city council holds its regular sessions on Mondays.

Fellow councilor Richard Cariño backed up his colleague’s statements, saying the proposed resolution to bring an e-bingo parlor to Baguio never got off the ground.

While not explicitly calling out the operator, Vice Mayor Bilog did say that the operator of this parlor, a Laguna-based company, was tasked to come up with the certificate that has since been questioned by the city council.

Sri Lanka officially scuttles three proposed integrated resort projects

Casino operators’ hopes for building large-scale integrated resorts in Sri Lanka bit the dust on Thursday as the country’s newly elected government officially put the kibosh on three pending projects. Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe told parliament that the new administration had “decided to ban such approval for casinos,” fulfilling a campaign promise by new president Maithripala Sirisena.

The previous government had offered operators like Crown Resorts significant tax concessions to help attract large-scale development but the plans were strongly opposed by other political parties and the nation’s influential Buddhist leaders. Sri Lanka has around five small casinos that operate in a legal grey area and the previous government had planned to dodge the issue of authorizing new casino licenses by allowing these operators to transfer their licenses via partnerships with large developers.

In addition to Crown’s $400m project in Sri Lanka’s capital Colombo, property developer John Keells Holdings and local politician/businessman Dhammika Perera had proposed similar projects, although none of these had yet to begin construction. The government insists all three operators can build resorts if they so choose, but casinos cannot be a part of the entertainment options.

Sri Lanka is also casting a fresh eye on its existing small-scale casinos. Cabinet spokesman Rajitha Senaratne said all current casino licenses will be reviewed because government officials “want to see the legal basis of those operations.” A new one-time casino tax of Rs 1b (US $7.5m) will be demanded of all current license holders. Finance Minister Ravi Karunanayake said the tax must be paid by April 15 or the whip would come down.

Senaratne also revealed that plans are underway to restrict casino gambling to a specific area of Sri Lanka. The previous government had designated its own gaming zone in the D.R. Wijewardena Mawatha area of Colombo but Senaratne said the exact location of this new gaming zone had yet to be determined.

Betway boosts sponsorship portfolio with major UK racing sponsorships

The online gambling operator, who had no previous connection to the sport before announcing in October that they would be sponsoring the two-mile championship race, have added the Lincoln, Chester Cup, Yorkshire Cup and Great Voltigeur to their portfolio.

Betway, replacing William Hill who supported the Doncaster highlight for several years in the 1990s and from 2006, is supporting the traditional Flat season curtain-raiser, the Lincoln Handicap at Doncaster on March 28th

The firm is then sponsoring two high profile races at York, the Group 2 Yorkshire Cup at York’s Dante Festival on May 13th to 15th and the Group 2 Great Voltigeur Stakes on August 19th during the Welcome to Yorkshire, Ebor Festival.

The company has already boarded on a number of other National Hunt racing sponsorships in recent weeks. Saturday’s Welsh Champion Hurdle and the supporting card at Ffos Las will be backed by Betway. The first race officially run under the Betway banner will be the 12.55pm Betway Novices’ Hurdle, a race subsequent Betway Champion Chase winner Sprinter Sacre took in 2011 when it was first run.

Betway is also sponsoring Chepstow’s Winter Beer Festival Raceday on 21st February and their Irish Raceday on 7th March. In addition they have taken a race on Newbury’s popular Greatwood Charity Raceday on 28th February.

In 2015, Betway-sponsored races will total to over £1million, in prize money, with a commitment to more as further opportunities arise.

“Betway wanted to continue investing heavily in UK racing after taking over the Champion Chase and are thrilled to be visiting some of the country’s finest courses over the season for a number of the calendar’s most historic contests.” said Betway Spokesman Alan Alger.

Aussie Millions Update: Davor Derek is Mixed-Maxed and Ole Schemion Leads $100k Final Table

Another Aussie Millions update that recaps on Davor Derek’s victory in the Mixed-Max event, and another sterling performance by Ole Schemion, as he leads the final eight players in the $100,000 Challenge.

One of the things that makes the Aussie Millions such a wonderful event is the world’s greatest players are all attracted to the allure of a $10,600 Main Event, $100,000 Challenge and $250,000 LK Boutique Challenge.

Two of these three events are currently in full effect. The Main Event attracted 648 players and as we move into the third day of action Brian Rast is performing well at the head of the final 58-players.

The $100,000 Challenge has reached the final table and once again it’s that German battering ram, Ole Schemion, who is leading the way. This guy is something else. The conqueror of Phil Ivey (KQs>AJo) holds 1.8m chips, with Jason Mo and Erik Seidel the only other two players sitting behind chips stacks towering over a million.

Day 1 saw 63 entrants leap through the gate and Mo was the chip leader when all was said and done. David Steicke bought in nice and fresh on Day 2, and the likes of Fabian Quoss, Richard Yong, Sorel Mizzi, Bryn Kenney, Brian Rast and Doug Polk all fired a second bullet – only Yong will turn that investment into a profit.

The field size ended up reading 70-entrants, six down on 2014’s number. The final eight players are all guaranteed $310,000, and the winner will bank $1.8m.

Singapore Remote Gambling Act to take effect Feb 2

Singapore Ministry of Home Affairs announced on Wednesday that websites that provide, facilitate, advertise or promote remote gambling service effective Feb 2.

The Remote Gambling Act (RGA) has been passed in Parliament October 7 last year Singapore’s government and law makers concern that online and mobile gambling facilitates crime such as money laundering and creates social problems through problem gambling.

The objectives of regulating remote gambling are to maintain law and order and to minimize the potential harm of remote gambling, especially to young persons and other vulnerable persons, Singapore’s Ministry of Home Affairs said in a statement.

Under the new law, companies that organize, manage or supervise remote gambling services and make them available to Singapore consumers could face fines of up to SIN$500,000 ($400,000) for undertaking those activities without authorization to do so.

There are exemptions to the rule. Operators can obtain certificates allowing them to provide remote gambling services to consumers in Singapore where this is considered to be “in the public interest”. Factors such as where operators are based and the subsequent ease with which any conditions of certificates of exemption can be enforced is one of a number of factors Singapore’s government could consider when carrying out the ‘public interest’ test.

Where remote gambling services are exempted, operators will only be able to accept bets on sports events and to run lotteries, although the scope of activities permitted under the exemption could be extended by the Singapore government.

Media Development Authority (MDA) also clarifies that the RGA passed does not cover games which do not allow players to receive money, or convert in-game credits to money or real merchandise.

Rivalry Games offers Super Bowl fantasy football on IOS and Android; DraftKings snaps up Pittsburgh Steelers partnership

FanDuel and DraftKings may have the lion’s share of the daily fantasy sports market, but upstart Rivalry Games is prepared to offer something it claims neither FanDuel nor DraftKings currently has in their menu.

The maker of Rivalry Fantasy Sports has announced that its mobile app will be the first to offer Super Bowl fantasy football. The app is available on iOS and Android devices, thus creating an avenue where fantasy football players can compete for points or cash during Super Bowl XLIX.

“Millions of Americans watch the Super Bowl, but normally, only a small percentage of viewers really care about the outcome,” Rivalry Games co-founder and CEO Justin Bauer said in a statement.

According to the company, Rivalry Fantasy Sports allows players to select six-man teams during the game. Players can either play for free or sign up and join cash games ranging from $1 to $100. All of Rivalry Fantasy Sports’ Super Bowl XLIX tournaments will carry a cap of around 10 to 100 players, ensuring participants a bigger chance of winning the tournament.

“Whether you play for pride or cash, Rivalry Fantasy Sports will make the Super Bowl way more exciting than usual,” Bauer added. “Pick your fantasy team, root for your players and hopefully earn some cash.”

Speaking of DraftKings, the daily fantasy sports site has signed up another NFL team to its roster of professional sports team partnerships. After securing the signatures of the New England Patriots and the Denver Broncos, DraftKings has added the Pittsburgh Steelers to its list of NFL partners.

“Fantasy sports are an increasingly important part of the fan experience for Steelers fans,” the Steelers’ Director of Corporate Partnerships and Sales Ryan Huzjak said in a statement.

Super Bowl XLIX: Top Storylines

Is it just me or has the lead-up to this year’s Super Bowl been just one endless loop of discussions surrounding DeflateGate? It’s weird because the media seems to have just zeroed in on this one issue and left every other narrative out in the cold. You would think that somebody would’ve gone against the grain and talked about something else, right?

Well, that’s what I’m going to do, or at least try to because the stink of DeflateGate is still prevalent so I still have the dedicate some space talking about it.

But other than that, Super Bowl XLIX is actually teeming with juicy plots and subplots, some of which I’m going to highlight only because, more than anything else, I just want to move past talking about deflated balls.

DeflateGate

For better or for worse, the saga surrounding those deflated balls from the AFC Championship game has dominated the headlines leading up to the Super Bowl. It’s a good thing because even without talking about the actual game itself, Super Bowl XLIX has remained relevant. That’s an easier feat to do these days, but it still doesn’t take away from the fact that everybody seems to be so fixated on DeflateGate that little attention is being paid on what actually matters more. You know, like the game itself.

The New England Head Coach Connection

If you peel off the ad naseum talk surrounding DeflateGate, you’ll realize that there are a number of narratives surrounding the game that can be dissected even more. This one is one of my favorites because not a lot of people are giving it the attention it deserves. Did you know that since Robert Kraft became the owner of the New England Patriots in the mid 90’s, he’s only hired two head coaches. We all know who one of them is, but not a lot of people remember that the other one was actually Pete Carroll, the same guy coaching the Seattle Seahawks and is one win away from winning his second straight Super Bowl.

In 2013 Random Consulting was selected after an international call by the Division of Gaming Enforcement to advise and assist in the roll-out of online gambling in the state of New Jersey and David Rebuck, Director of the DGE has said “New Jersey could not have implemented i-gaming without Mario’s assistance.”

Galea himself acknowledged that “after the legislation came into force, New Jersey set an aggressive launch target of November 2013.   This meant that Random Consulting had less than six months to ensure that all aspects of the regulations were in place and every licensed operator went through a rigorous testing procedure that included a number of new challenges such as the introduction of geo-location, real-time KYC and massively expanded responsible gaming measures.”

Since 1998 Galea has held different roles spanning across the gambling industry from system development, management, operations, including setting up gaming policy and regulatory policy.  All this experience was put to test in the rollout for New Jersey. “Working with the team at the DGE was challenging and satisfying on equal measure.  I spent 18 months in New Jersey, and I couldn’t be more proud of what we all, as a team, achieved.  There’s a long road ahead, but New Jersey was the first US state to go live with interactive gambling and I’m fully sure that it’ll be a force to be reckoned with for a very long time- New Jersey is now the gold standard for online gaming.”

Prior to his time at the DGE, Galea was the CEO of the Maltese Lottery and Gaming Authority for five years which, during his tenure, saw the Island become the world’s central hub of online gambling with a total to date of 200 operators licensed.
