Synot Tip scraps all sports sponsorships in protest over Czech gambling tax hikes

Czech gambling operator Synot Tip has cancelled its high profile sports sponsorships in protest over the country’s new gambling tax hikes.

On Thursday, Synot Tip issued a statement saying it was scrapping “most of its sponsorship and advertising activities” with Czech sports organizations. The company says it is doing so due to the “sudden increase in taxes in the lottery industry.”

Czech legislators recently approved a new gambling tax regime, which saw them shift from a flat 20% on all gambling winnings to a tiered rate, with lotteries and sports betting taxed at 23% and slot machine tax rising to 28%. The increase was the second rate hike in the last four years.

Neofytos Neofytou, director of Synot Tip International Ltd, claimed to be “shocked” by Czech legislators’ “unprofessional and populist approach” to revenue generation. Neofytou said the new tax would cost Synot Tip “hundreds of millions of crowns” and thus it “simply can not support” sponsorship activities any longer.

Decision on NHL expansion could be a couple of months away

If you’re one of the people asking, “What happened to the NHL’s expansion?” We might have an answer for you: Nothing yet.

The member of the National Hockey League executive committee met in New York on Wednesday to have an update on the expansion application review process. A source told the Review Journal that although both bids were discussed, no decision was made.

Lead investor in Las Vegas NHL franchise Bill Foley is not surprised and said that the final decision is still a couple of months away and he is patiently waiting for it.

“I think it will be March or April, and then we can start putting one foot in front of another,” Foley told LVRJ. I feel we’re in a very good position at this point. We’re respecting the process and hoping for a positive outcome.”

The Road To Super Bowl 50 Goes Through Carolina and New England

When we talk about the Road to Super Bowl 50, we’re inevitably discussing multiple pathways to achieve something great. It’s not a highway with 32 teams all trying to get out ahead of each other. It’s a winding network of different routes.

The same goes for the four quarterbacks who will be featured in these games. Carson Palmer, Cam Newton, Peyton Manning and Tom Brady, have each taken a different route to stardom. For some, the road has been a lot cleaner than others.

It all comes down to luck (note: not Andrew Luck).

Palmer went from a Heisman Trophy winner, to a first overall pick, to the injury reserve, to bitching his way out of Cincinnati, to landing in Oakland, to winning four games in two years in Oakland, to finally ending up in Arizona, to winning his first playoff game in thirteen seasons.

Anthony Martial Could Cost Man United Upwards of £60m

Anthony Martial, the most expensive teenager in the history of the game, could cost his club Man United upwards of £60m after a French news outlet leaked the details of his deal.

If you wondered why Louis Van Gaal’s philosophy at Manchester United was to pass the ball sideways and backwards, I believe I have found the answer.

It’s to prevent Anthony Martial from scoring a goal.

The French star joined United from Monaco in the summer for a reported £38m. At the time it was a world record signing for a teenager breaking their own record of £27m when they signed left back Luke Shaw from Southampton a season earlier.

Pete Rose heads to Reds Hall of Fame

For what it’s worth, Pete Rose is getting a hall of fame induction… in the Cincinnati Reds’ team hall.

Bypassing its usual voting process, Reds announced that it will induct Rose into its Hall of Fame this summer.

During the press conference, Reds’ chief executive Bob Castellini said Tuesday that MLB commissioner Rob Manfred approved the plans to honor Rose. The June 24-26 events will retire Rose’s No. 14 and feature a 40-year reunion of the 1976 world champion Reds.

The Reds Hall of Fame had the same rule that the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum has had since 1991, which barred any players on baseball’s permanently ineligible list from induction, but the board of directors voted unanimously to change the bylaws and elect Rose.

The Newest NFL Head Coaches Are Doomed

One of the best coaching hires of the NFL offseason happened right under everyone’s noses. It wasn’t Chip Kelly in San Francisco, or Hue Jackson defecting to Cleveland. The best one was actually a re-hire, and it had nothing to do with filling a suddenly vacant head coaching position.

One of the sneakiest moves was San Diego re-hiring Ken Whisenhunt to be their offensive coordinator.

I know what you’re probably saying or thinking. But there’s a difference between hiring Whisenhunt to be a head coach to run your entire show as opposed to enlisting him as a guy who has a specific duty. As the main man, Whisenhunt is a gong show. In his last two seasons with a bad Titans team, he went a dismal 3-20 and was fired by the team halfway through last year.

But as an offensive coordinator, the guy is a genius and he’s proved that everywhere he’s gone as the signal caller on just one side of the ball. Look at the evidence:

Texas Rangers’ Yu Darvish in hot water following brother’s gambling arrest

Sho Darvish’s baseball betting arrest has become a family affair.

On Tuesday, several news outlets reported that Darvish’s older brother, Texas Rangers pitcher Yu Darvish is now being investigated by Major League Baseball for his potential involvement in Sho’s alleged gambling ring.

According to The Japan Times, there are no charges—yet—for Yu Darvish at this point, but the MLB is conducting a probe “to find out if there is any link between the ace and the reason for his younger brother’s arrest.”

In an email to the Japanese news outlet, MLB VP for communications Michael Teevan said: “We are aware of this situation and are looking into it, per our standard protocols.”

Sri Lanka cricket suspends bowling coach over match fixing allegations

Sri Lankan test cricket is in the spotlight amid an alleged attempt to fix a test against the West Indies.

Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) handed Anusha Samaranayake a two-month ban on Monday over his relationship with net bowler Gayan Vishwajith, who allegedly approached national team players to underperform during a Test match against West Indies in October.

Sports Minister Dayasiri Jayasekera said that Vishwajith had a link to a bookmaker and offered the players 10 million Sri Lanka rupees ($108,000) to lose the match.

The players rejected the offer and Sri Lanka won by an innings and six runs after veteran left-arm spinner Herath took 10 wickets.

South Korea fines new Cardinals pitcher for gambling

The newly-signed St. Louis Cardinals reliever Seung Hwan Oh gets another fine for his gambling escapade in Macau and this time from his country South Korea.

A Seoul court has fined Oh KRW 10 million ($8,300) for breaking South Korean laws by gambling at a Macau casino, according to spokesman Joon Young Maeng at the Seoul Central District Court on Tuesday.

Former Chicago Cubs pitcher Lim Chang-yong, Oh’s ex-teammate with South Korean club Samsung Lions, was also fined the same amount.

Oh and Lim were recently ordered by the Korean Baseball Organization (KBO) to pay a fine of KRW 7 million ($5,800) after prosecutors decided their actions constituted a summary offense. Both were also hit with half-season bans if they decide to return to the KBO League.
