Solid Opener Set for Oaklawn Park Jan. 9
The nine-race Jan. 9 opening-day card at Oaklawn Park drew 92 entries, three more than the corresponding date last year and seven more than in 2013 at the Hot Springs, Ark., Thoroughbred track.
Sunday Racing to Return at Laurel Park
Laurel Park and the Maryland Thoroughbred Horsemen’s Association have decided to race Sundays in February and March. MJC officials said the Maryland Racing Commission signed off on the schedule changes.

NYRA Working on Facility Improvements
As a new year begins and live racing continues at Aqueduct Racetrack, a host of capital improvements are under way at Belmont Park in preparation for the upcoming spring meet. Live racing returns to Belmont April 29.
Portland Meadows Adds a Monday Program
Portland Meadows will add a live racing program for Feb. 9 to make up for a weather-related cancellation Dec. 30, 2014. The schedule change was approved by the Oregon Racing Commission.
Sports Creek Raceway closing after 29 years of horse racing
fter 29 years of horses running through Sports Creek Raceway, the Swartz Creek entertainment facility is shutting its doors.
Chris Locking, general manager of the harness racing track, said on Tuesday, Jan. 6, that the raceway is closing and is seeking any interested buyers.
“It’s time to go another direction and hopefully it will turn out to be on a brighter side,” Locking said.
On Jan. 1, the facility had to close according to the Michigan Gaming Control Board because the raceway lacked a contract with the Michigan Harness Horsemen’s Association.
PokerStars Adds Its First Pros from India and Japan
PokerStars has signed Aditya Agarwal and Kosei Ichinose to Team Pro contracts, it announced yesterday via the PokerStars Blog.
The pair are the first Indian and Japanese grinders, respectively, to receive sponsorship deals with the site.
Both players have been playing on the site for many years and found considerable success at the tables, both online and live. Their career highlights include Agarwal finishing 212th in the 2013 World Series of Poker Main Event, and an outright victory for Ichinose in a 2013 Asia Pacific Poker Tour event.
