Elaine Wynn fails to win re-election to Wynn Resorts board of directors

Elaine Wynn has lost her bid to regain her seat on casino operator Wynn Resorts board of directors.

Wynn Resorts held its annual meeting of stockholders in Las Vegas on Friday, where the makeup of the board of directors was put to a vote. The board’s director nominees John Hangenbuch and Edward Virtue were re-elected while Elaine failed to garner the necessary support.

The 72-year-old Elaine was unceremoniously turfed from Wynn’s board in March. Undaunted, Elaine nominated herself for re-election based on her contention that she had helped build the company into a global player. Elaine also claimed the Wynn board lacked diversity and that she was the only member who could talk plainly to chairman/CEO Steve Wynn, to whom she was twice married and divorced.

Wynn Resorts countered Elaine’s claims by accusing her of passing $10m of her Wynn shares – she holds a 9.4% stake in the company – to her charitable foundation to sell during a blackout period. The board also diminished her contributions to Wynn’s growth, saying her efforts were “more appropriately matters to be handled by the company’s highly trained and professional staff.”

Iowa Lottery boss says online lotteries “socially acceptable:’ Minnesota online lottery has three weeks to live

The CEO of the Iowa Lottery says the business faces a lot of red ink unless it starts selling tickets online.

Iowa Lottery boss Terry Rich appeared before the state’s House Government Oversight Committee on Thursday to discuss the Lottery’s future. Rich told legislators that the 2011 Department of Justice opinion indicated that the Lottery had the authority to conduct “internet gaming.” However, Rich assured legislators that the Lottery wouldn’t proceed “without having discussions with you, working with the other gaming entities.”

Rich warned that the Lottery faced a bleak future unless it adapted to “player expectations for convenience and use of technology.” Rich noted that the Lottery had no hope of engaging with millennials unless it embraced mobile technology. Rich also believes that it’s only a “matter of time” before online lotteries become “socially acceptable.”

Earlier this month, Rich, who also serves at president of the North American Lottery Association, told Stateline.org that lotteries “don’t want to be the post office. Gaming, and especially the lottery, is one of the last things you can’t do on your mobile phone.”

Betsson revenue record; Svenska Spel mutters; Sweden drops App Store purge

Swedish betting operator Betsson AB has continued its positive momentum from 2014 by posting a new quarterly revenue record.

Betsson released a trading update on Friday showing revenue up 24% to SEK 847.4m (US $98m) and net income up 42% to SEK 224.1m in the three months ending March 31. Mobile revenue was up 131% to SEK 233.3m, representing 28% of the overall pie. Betsson’s dominant casino vertical saw revenue rise 28% to SEK 585m while sports betting turnover was up 60%. Customer deposits rose 43%.

Much of the gains are attributable to the February 2014 acquisition of the Dutch-facing Oranje and Kroon casino brands but Betsson says organic revenue growth was up 14%. Betsson’s Q1 operating margin of 28.1% was its highest figure in three years.

Betsson CEO Magnus Silfverberg claimed the results validated the company’s “multi-brand strategy of migrating a number of brands to one shared technical platform.” The Techsson platform is currently responsible for 87% of group revenue and the stragglers will be migrated before the year is through. Betsson recently shuttered its DanmarksAutomaten and Maximo brands and merged their customer databases with Casino.dk and CasinoEuro respectively.
