Confusion Surrounds China Nanjing Millions Shut Down as Local Authorities Declare Event “Criminal”

The APPT Nanjing Millions was shut down last week before the second day of the reportedly PokerStars-backed tournament festival’s main event: that much everyone can agree on. Beyond that, however, there seems to be plenty of dispute about exactly what went down and who was responsible for what was likely the most ambitious poker event […]

Deutsche Telekom launch German-facing sports betting site Tipp3.de

Telecom giant Deutsche Telekom (DT) has launched its new German-facing online sports betting site Tipp3.de.

The Tipp3 betting site began taking wagers on Wednesday, with a focus on football betting but basketball, hockey, tennis and Formula 1 racing are also on the menu. Tipp3 says it will limit its offering to pro sports events, with no markets for amateur or youth matches.

DT head of digital media Matthias Schmidt-Pfizner, said the telecom firm meant to establish itself in the growing sports betting market as “a trustworthy online provider with a maximum focus on security, quality and the customer experience.”

DT announced its online sports betting plans in February after acquiring a 64% stake in Austrian sports betting operator Deutsche Sportswetten (DSW), which operates the Austrian-licensed Tipp3.at site. DSW’s minority partner is Österreichische Sportwetten, part of the Casinos Austria Group.

China lottery sales fall in first month since suspension of online sales

Lottery sales in China took a tumble in March, the first month since the government suspended online lottery sales.

The Ministry of Finance reported overall lottery sales of RMB 30.8b (US $4.97b) in March, a decline of 6.3% from the same month last year. Welfare lottery sales fell 5% to RMB 17.8b and sports lottery revenue was off 8% to RMB 13b. For the first quarter of 2015, overall sales are up 18.5% to RMB 98.8b.

Lottery sales had been on a tear in 2015, with double-digit increases in both January and February. Then China announced it was instituting a ‘temporary’ suspension of online sales, which followed an audit of provincial lottery administration centers.

The online suspension was sparked by reports that some operators weren’t registering all online sales, thereby depriving the state of revenue. The recent joint statement by eight government ministries strongly suggested the suspension wouldn’t be lifted anytime soon.

New Banking Merchant Category Codes No Miracle Solution to Online Gambling SNAFUs, Says Expert

Last week’s launch of new Merchant Category Codes (MCC) for online poker card transactions brought with them hopes of a new boost for US regulated markets. Ladbrokes to accelerate operational review following disappointing Q1

UK-listed bookmaker Ladbrokes plans to accelerate its company-wide review after turning in a disappointing Q1 trading update.

Ladbrokes posted earnings before interest and tax of £14.3m in the three months ending March 31, down 23% from the same period last year. Overall revenue rose 3.3% but a combination of a “weak” Cheltenham festival, punter-friendly football results and some hot-handed high-rollers conspired to erase those revenue gains.

Lads also blamed its poor showing on “externally imposed headwinds,’ i.e. the new online point-of-consumption tax and Lads’ withdrawal from certain ‘grey’ markets to comply with the UK’s new online licensing regime. Lads shares fell over 3% on Wednesday to close at 102.7p.

Lads’ digital division reported revenue up 9.5%, but this was due to a 132% rise in its Australian operations. Stripping aside the Aussie numbers – which got a boost from the April 2014 acquisition of Betstar – Lads’ online revenue was down 6.8% year-on-year.

Kids' center leaving Franklinton for Hilltop

The Boys & Girls Club that has served as an anchor, beacon and all-around fun place for generations of kids plans to move from its 67-year-old home in Franklinton. Shifting neighborhood demographics and the cost of maintaining a century-old building are luring the organization’s largest clubhouse west – by just a few miles – to the Hilltop area.
