Sands China to strip Sands Macao of gaming tables to boost Parisian property?

Casino operator Sands China is reportedly considering converting its Sands Macao property into a non-gaming facility in order to transfer scarce gaming tables to its newer venues.

During a speech at the Venetian Macao on Thursday, Las Vegas Sands chairman (and Sands China CEO) Sheldon Adelson said there simply aren’t enough hotel rooms in Macau to handle an influx of truly large Meetings, Incentives and Conferences and Exhibitions (MICE) clients. Adelson, who led the push to develop the MICE business in both Las Vegas and Macau, said he’d submitted an application to Macau authorities for a new 2,500-room hotel project.

Adelson offered no specifics as to what form this project might take, but Union Gaming Research analysts have come up with a theory. The theory has its roots in Macau’s infamous cap on new gaming tables, which calls for a 3% annual compound growth limit from its current total of roughly 5,700 tables.

Macau officials, who had previously suggested that there was some flexibility in the cap, have since reverted to their previous stance about enforcing the 3% limit until the last Macau casino concession expires in 2022. However, they’ve also suggested that the total number of new tables could be issued in advance of their annual delivery schedule depending on operator need, so it’s anybody’s guess what rule applies.

Mohegan Sun announces South Korean airport casino proposal

Connecticut tribal casino operator Mohegan Sun has confirmed it is seeking a South Korean casino with local partner Incheon International Airport Corporation (IIAC).

On Tuesday, the Mohegan Tribal Gaming Authority (MTGA) announced it had signed a memorandum of understanding with the IIAC to develop a “first of its kind gateway entertainment city” in South Korea. The parties hope to have a finalized concept agreement by June 30 and a scope of work proposal by the end of 2015.

The plan is to develop a 3.2-square-kilometer parcel of IIAC-owned land at the Incheon International Airport that would include an 18,500-square-meter foreigners-only casino with 250 gaming tables and 1,500 slot machines. Non-gaming amenities would include 1,000 hotel rooms, retail and dining options, a film studio, a 20,000-seat arena and an indoor-outdoor amusement park with high-tech rides.

The project isn’t shy about its desire to attract a ritzy clientele, as 300 of its hotel rooms will be six-star quality, with the remaining 700 holding five-star designation. The project also plans to trade on its location by offering the “first and only private jet terminal in the world connected to an integrated resort.”

Sportech ‘first European company’ to get full gaming-related license in New Jersey

The US subsidiary of UK pool betting operator Sportech PLC is celebrating after officially receiving its New Jersey license.

On Tuesday, Sportech announced that its Sportech Racing subsidiary had received a Casino Service Industry Enterprise License from the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement (DGE). The license supersedes the transactional waiver that Sportech Racing has been operating under for the past four-plus years. Sportech claims this represents “among the first, if not the first, full gaming-related license to be issued in New Jersey to a European-owned company.”

Sportech Racing processes wagers for the state’s racetracks, off-track betting facilities and the state’s only advance deposit wagering online race betting site. Sportech’s data and operations center in Mt. Laurel handles over $11b in annual wagering from racing punters in the US, Canada, the Caribbean and South America. Sportech is also operating online casino gambling for Atlantic City’s Resorts Casino Hotel as part of the SNG Interactive joint venture with NYX Gaming Group.

Sportech CEO Ian Penrose celebrated receiving the DGE’s “gold standard” approval, calling it “an endorsement of our standards of operations and the qualifications of our directors and senior employees.”
