Things to Know about the city of Baltimore

On Tuesday, swaths of East and West Baltimore erupted in flames amid riots that followed the funeral for Freddie Gray, a 25-year-old man who died a week after suffering a critical spine injury while in police custody. In a startlingly segregated city struggling with failing schools, failing infrastructure, a failing economy and a police department under federal investigation, it seemed only a matter of time before this side of Baltimore boiled over.

Gov. Bently says gambling won’t solve the budget problems in Alabama

Senate President Pro Tem Del Marsh is set to introduce a bill that could pave the way for a lottery and table gaming in Alabama but Gov. Robert Bentley said gambling revenue won’t solve the budget problems.

Marsh is drafting the bill, citing the results of the study of Auburn University in Montgomery that showed implementing a lottery would create $400 million in new revenue for the General Fund, 11,000 new jobs, and would create up to a $1.2 billion impact.

Marsh said a few members were adamantly opposed to legalize gambling but most senators agreed that the idea needs to be considered.

However, Gov. Bentley, who visited to the State House to talk to lawmakers about his tax proposals, said the state “cannot be dependent on gambling for the 2016 budgets or for future budgets.”

Mayweather-Pacquiao Betting Record Setting

It’s the fight of the century. It’s good versus evil. It’s sublime speed vs. an impenetrable defense. It’s the two best fighters of this generation going toe-to-toe. It doesn’t matter how you describe it or how much hyperbole is attached to the pre-fight build up, when Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao step in to the ring this Saturday May 2 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas Nevada it will be special, not only for boxing fans but all of the sportsbooks booking action on the fight.

The current fight odds at Bodog have Floyd Mayweather as the -220 favorite, bettors would need to risk $220 for every $100 they want to win and a bet on Manny Pacquiao would profit bettors $175 for every $100 they risk on the Filipino congressman.

Online sportsbooks rarely give out total handle on individual sporting events but we’ve been told by a couple of online sportsbooks that this fight between Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao is by far the biggest booked fight in the history of online betting. One Las Vegas bookmaker told me that the total action is already rivaling Super Bowl and could become the biggest single betting event this year. More prefight hyperbole perhaps?

We were able to glean a bit of extra information from our friends at Bodog.  Currently the money line is split down the middle. Since the line opened at -350/+250, they’ve seen a steady stream of money coming in on Pacquiao to drive the odds down.

Defense asks US judge to toss out FBI ruse case against Paul Phua

After several exchange of motions, objections and evidence hearings in the illegal sports betting case centered on Wei Seng “Paul” Phua, his defense attorneys in Las Vegas are now trying to get the FBI ruse case thrown out.

Attorneys David Chesnoff and Thomas Goldstein also asked U.S. District Judge Andrew Gordon to end pre-trial GPS monitoring and let their client Paul Phua to travel abroad, in  time for his 51st birthday.

“He is not a flight risk and has had the courage to remain and fight for his liberty,” attorneys Chesnoff and Goldstein said in an email Tuesday.

The request came a week after U.S. District Judge Andrew Gordon ruled that federal prosecutors couldn’t use evidence obtained in Phua’s Las Vegas Strip suite and that the FBI had violated Phua’s privacy rights in pulling off their investigative tricks.

Sports Information Traders Buys Big Time Sharps Handicapping Service

Los Angeles, California – Sports Information Traders a U.S. based sports analytics company announced today that they have purchased the rights and assets of Big Time Sharps a popular sports handicapping service that launched last football season.

A deal with undisclosed terms is the first announced acquisition of the second quarter  of 2015. Sports Information Traders which is owned by lead handicapper Jon Price has acquired Big Time Sharps, otherwise known as BTS Analytics, through one of the biggest acquisitions in the last decade aside from Big Stick Medias buyout of Don Best Sports for $16,740,000. Bill Davis ,who is the analytical genius behind BTS Picks and mathematician behind the companies famed formula released a statement earlier this week when news originally broke of the potential acquisition, saying that he’s looking forward to joining one of the biggest and most reputable handicapping services in the country as he finalizes his deal to part of the team at Sports Information Traders.

Bill Davis’ formula gained him great acclaim throughout the sports handicapping world over the last 10 years as he’s been one of the first to prove that through the use of mathematics and various algorithms of probability, the outcome of sporting events can be predicted accurately with around a 70% success rate, which is far and beyond what most handicappers and touts are capable of. It’s understood that Professor Davis’ equation is the root cause of SIT Consulting’s purchase, as they will own the exclusive rights to Bill Davis’ famed proprietary “Davis Equation.”

Jon Price, whom also has a background in mathematics like Professor Davis, has always relied on formulas for his picks as well, and has openly been a fan of Bill Davis’ Davis Equation for many years. Mr. Price often touts about sparing no expense in delivering the absolute best possible product, and he feels like this latest acquisition of BTS Analytics and Bill Davis’ formula are a progressive step in ensuring that goal. This deal should lead the way for more acquisitions and mergers in the sports betting tips industry.

eBay’s Davide Cervellin on Data and Analytics

Rebecca Liggero talks to Davide Cervellin, Head of Europe Analytics for eBay as he discusses data and analytics and how it helps the business.

“First of all, we are very lucky because we have a lot of data since day one; everything has been tracked. What we basically do is we have designed an organization that empowers data to be at the center of the decision making process. Having analytics reporting into finance, which means there is a CFO, the highest visibility on metrics and every decision is made in finance on the business cases that were built. So really I think it’s down to creating the set up to empower the people to be visible to the leaders of he company and all the business cases and all the numbers visible so they can make an informed decision at what they do,” said Cervellin.

As per data about customers, Cervellin said the company created a customer centric view from the data gathered from what the users do on their website and sister companies’ website to fully understand buyer behavior, understand what they want and give something better to the buyer.  Have someone on staff who can evaluate what the buyers want and make sure this person participates in senior discussions, allowing them to paint the picture with numbers.

Cervellin also said that for gambling industry, the companies have to let go of the willingness to control the user. They have to design experiences that adapt themselves based on algorithms that they design and maintain and evolve so that they can feed the user with what they wanna know at the right time on the right device because this is what empower the business to go away from the strategy of men controlling everything into a strategy of man controlling the processes that the machine owns.
