Marina Bay Sands turns five; Resorts World Sentosa turns stingy

Five years after it opened, the Marina Bay Sands (MBS) integrated resort casino has become one of the Singapore skyline’s most distinguishable features.

MBS, which opened its doors on April 27, 2010, cost $5.7b to build and generated $1.7b in earnings for Las Vegas Sands in 2014. The property’s success story has made it the first stop for legislators from other jurisdictions that are considering opening up their casino markets.

Perhaps even more importantly to Sands boss Sheldon Adelson, MBS has become an iconic facility, infinitely more recognizable than its crosstown rival, Genting Singapore’s Resorts World Sentosa (RWS).

Genting Singapore held its annual general meeting last week, and its lack of visual appeal was a far less pressing concern than its growing bad debt problem. The amount of bad debts at RWS grew nearly 42% last year to US $262m – 13.3% of its total VIP revenue – prompting chairman Lim Kok Thay to proclaim that the company had since become a little more discerning in choosing who gets credit.

Casino magnate Sheldon Adelson takes shots at ex-CEO in court

Billionaire casino CEO and chairman Sheldon Adelson says he doesn’t oversee day-to-day business of Las Vegas Sands Corp. but lawyers representing a fired former executive of related company Sands China Ltd. suing the company and Adelson for wrongful termination argue Adelson decides everything from firing to stock bonuses to seating inside his Macau casino’s restaurants. Adelson spent Tuesday morning testifying in a Clark County courtroom often offering unprompted his low opinion of former Sands China CEO Steven Jacobs causing his own lawyer to object at one point.

Content Marketing Tip of the Week: Further Reading – Contagious

theMediaFlow Managing Director Nichola Stott gives an overview on the book Contagious in this edition of CalvinAyre.com’s Content Marketing Tip of the Week.

This weeks’ tip is a bit of homework; which is further reading for those of you looking to get more of a thorough academic understanding of “virality” and what common properties there are with the kind of content that spreads.

Contagious: How to Build Word of Mouth in the Digital Age is written by Jonah Berger, Professor of Marketing at Wharton Penn. and is the result of decades of analysis into thousands of case studies, distilling success-factors into six common principles. As an example one of [the factors] is “emotive” in that messaging that has the right emotive power has the potential to be shared very widely within the group for which it resonates. If you think about the amazing Kony2012 video it broke every rule for video content on social media. Well over three minutes and a hard hitting message, but the emotive power was phenomenal and it racked up 100 million views in 6 days.

Caveat: I’m not sure one can explain the success of Gangnam style however…

Like Father, Like Son: Phil Hellmuth & His Son Both Cash in SugarHouse Comp

Lee Davy goes off on a father like son yarn after a week that sees 16-year old Mick Schumacher win his first Formula Four race, and Phil Hellmuth and his son Phillip both cash in an event at Sugarhouse Casino.

As a father, I spend most of my time gently nudging my teenage son around all of the Sarlacc’s that I fell into when I was his age. It’s not easy. A combination of hormones, and any confidence you have injected through their early years, creating a stubborn, unbreakable resistance.

Of course, what you are really doing is trying to help them become as perfect as humanly possible. You want them to imbibe your greatest qualities, launch from a foundation of your values and beliefs, and drop all the crappy parts that you have been trying so hard to shed for so many years.

‘Like father, like son’, is not quite accurate. ‘Like father, without all the crappy defects, like son’, is more like it.

Boring, Boring Chelsea?

Lee Davy gives his opinion on the recent claims that the soon-to-be Premier League champions, Chelsea, are boring.

As a Manchester United fan, watching football is not the same as it used to be. I started watching the game when I was seven years old. That was back in 1982 when Liverpool kept a Luther Blissett inspired Watford away from the league title.

I think we finished third that year, as we did in 81. It was tough back then. Liverpool won everything, and because of that you hated them. It was the way you were raised. You hated the best teams, never spoke of their strengths, and searched high and low for their weaknesses. I can’t even blame my old man for the hatred. He was a Liverpool fan.

Then the 90s kicked in. Oasis set my ears alight and United set my eyes alight. They dominated football throughout the best times of my life. During the Alex Ferguson era a United fan always expected to win. It didn’t matter who we played. We always felt we had enough in our locker to come out on top. More often than not, we did.

Ryan Jones Wins the WSOPC Main Event in Cherokee

Ryan Jones wins the World Series of Poker Circuit Main Event after defeating David Williams, in heads-up action, to take the first prize of $235,804 at Harrah’s Cherokee.

Ryan Jones has booked a berth at the $2 million guaranteed World Series of Poker Circuit (WSOPC) National Championships. The 24-year old from Burlington, North Carolina, defeated David Williams (not the David Williams) in heads-up action after entering the final table with a slight chip lead.

It’s been the greatest year in the poker career of Jones. After a few years of creating nothing but ripples, Jones first big wave came at the turn of the year when he finished fourth in a $2m guaranteed event at the World Poker Tour (WPT) Borgata Winter Open in Atlantic City. He picked up $119,582 for that finish, after proving he could wade through a huge field after 4,179 entrants signed on the dotted line.

Momentum begets momentum, and a few months later, a few hours from his hometown, he beats 786 entrants, and doubles that score.
