Friendly Fraud

Noam Grinberg, Head of Risk Management at SafeCharge, gives 7 tips to online merchants to minimise the problem of friendly fraud.

“Friendly” fraud? It sounds ironic doesn’t it? This is a term for chargeback fraud, where a consumer makes an online transaction with their own credit card and subsequently requests a chargeback from their card issuer after the event, denying they had the goods or claiming they did not make the transaction.

Friendly fraud can vary a lot between types of online transactions. Some industries (for example financial services) are more affected by friendly fraud as the transactional amounts are much higher than in other sectors, and it is easier for the users to process chargebacks, claiming that they didn’t receive the service or didn’t authorise a transaction. In financial service business it is estimated that 70 % of the total transactions reported as fraud are friendly fraud, so it’s a big problem.

So how can online merchants reduce the risk of friendly fraud? It’s best to use a third party payment provider that can offer 3D Management where security is increased and conversion is reduced. Use sophisticated real-time rules engines that can block or flag suspicious sales, a risk platform to handle the system’s alerts and negative/positive lists. Have a system that can support combatting friendly fraud by setting limits and flagging excessive users but is also built to primarily address real fraud users.

Confessions of a Poker Writer: The Dichotomy of Truth

Lee Davy continues his confessions series by talking about the dichotomy presented by revealing truths within the industry that whilst entertaining could harm the industry’s growth.

Sometimes I think life was so much easier when I was younger. Back then I only had to think about myself. As I age, my thoughts drift to the needs of others. I find myself in moral dilemmas all of the time. I don’t know whether to take the blue pill, or the red one?

This week I conducted the greatest interview I have ever been involved with. It was a discussion about life with two of the best players in the business: Bryn Kenney and Sorel Mizzi. The interview took place in a beautiful park in Amsterdam, a city where tolerance seems to be the buzzword.

What constitutes a great interview?

Vietnam sentences M88 defendants; Korean soap opera leads to illegal casino bust

Vietnamese authorities have handed down stiff sentences for those 59 individuals connected with online gambling site M88.com.

On Tuesday, a Ho Chi Minh City court sentenced 52 defendants to lengthy stints in prison, while seven other defendants received suspended sentences. The 59 defendants were caught up in the January 2013 bust of a ring tied to the Philippines-licensed M88, which Vietnamese authorities have dubbed the country’s most popular online betting site.

Amazingly, only six of the accused were agents working on behalf of M88, while the rest were simply gamblers whose names were found in the agents’ files. The agents were convicted of ‘organizing gambling’ and handed sentences ranging from two to seven years along with fines of up to VND 50m (US $2,300). The site’s main agent in Vietnam, Nguyen Vo Hoai Tram, remains at large.

As for those 46 gamblers, they received sentences ranging from one-and-a-half to four years in prison simply for placing wagers. Among those receiving four-year sentences was Dao Ngoc Quy, who wagered VND 8.8b ($404k) on football, losing VND 6b to the site. The gamblers were also fined between VND 5m to 30m apiece.

Report: Galaxy Macau Phase Two gets 150 new gaming tables

Macau casino operator Galaxy Entertainment Group (GEG) has reportedly been awarded 150 new gaming tables for Phase 2 of its Galaxy Macau resort.

News of the 150 tables, which was broken by Portuguese-language newspaper Jornal Tribuna de Macau, has yet to be confirmed by Macau authorities. The paper offered no word on GEG’s request for 444 slot machines for Phase 2.

The table allocation is less than half the 400 tables GEG had requested for its new property, which has its grand opening on May 27. There’s nothing preventing GEG from putting 400 tables into the Phase 2 venue, although doing so would require the company to shift tables from Galaxy Macau’s Phase 1 or GEG’s StarWorld Hotel.

Macau’s government has played coy regarding its table allocation strategy, insisting that it planned to stick to its plan of restricting annual table growth to 3% until 2022, while simultaneously suggesting that the gaming table cap had some flexibility built in, with consideration granted to operators who did their utmost to diversify their new properties beyond gaming. Understandably, GEG is said to be disappointed by the Macau government’s decision, given its dedication to boosting Phase 2’s non-gaming amenities.

G2E Asia 2015 Day 2 Recap

The second day of G2E Asia 2015 has just wrapped up in the Venetian Macau, one of the largest events of the year dedicated to the Asian gambling industry and beyond.

Today’s turnout was similar to day one, with a bustling expo floor and conference hall, tonight with a promise of numerous networking events and gatherings at the Venetian’s hotspots, followed by Club Cubic for the diehards.

This year we’ve noticed a strong presence of the American Gaming Association at G2E Asia, co-organizers of the event with Reed Exhibitions. Geoff Freeman, President of the AGA, delivered over twenty interviews just today and has been in high demand since his arrival.

Freeman told CalvinAyre.com he is delighted with the growth of G2E Asia and confirmed the AGA is also sharing their knowledge with developing jurisdictions in Asia such as Japan, where he was prior to his arrival in Macau, in fact. Freeman is not alarmed by the revenue decline in Macau and is confident things will start picking up again – the gambling industry often experiences ebbs and flows, he said.

China LotSynergy launch Cambodia sports lottery, ink two more Chinese provinces

Chinese lottery technology supplier China LotSynergy Holdings has successfully launched a sports lottery offering in Cambodia.

Last year, China LotSynergy’s wholly owned subsidiary Ace Metro Limited inked a 10-year exclusive deal with Cambodia’s National Sport Lottery Company Ltd. to develop Cambodia’s national lottery business. On Tuesday, the partners made their plan a reality via the launch of betting terminals, lottery games and a telephone-based ‘hotline transaction system.’

In exchange for an undisclosed share of revenue, Ace Metro has agreed to provide roughly 7k betting terminals, making this Cambodia’s largest lottery transaction system. China LotSynergy said its system could support up to 10k terminals.

Ace Metro will also provide transaction and management applications systems and is responsible for game development, new media lottery sales operation and management, customer service, technical support and maintenance, plus point-of-sales training.

Poll shows two-thirds of Pennsylvania voters support legal online gambling

A new poll shows two-thirds of Pennsylvania residents want online gambling legalized, regulated and taxed.

The poll, commissioned by the Harrisburg-based Bravo Group lobbying firm, surveyed 769 registered voters between May 9-15. Of those surveyed, 66% want state politicians to “pass a law that will tax online gambling so the money can be used for education and other vital state programs.” Only 20% of those surveyed expressed opposition to such a proposal.

The poll’s findings are in stark contrast to the farcical survey results released earlier this month by the Sheldon Adelson-supported Coalition to Stop Internet Gambling. That much-derided ‘push-poll’ – which salted the mine by reading participants highly loaded and seriously dubious statements about online gambling – claimed that nearly three-quarters of Pennsylvania voters wanted to see online gambling operators’ heads impaled on spikes.

Both surveys reveal how the phrasing of a question can skew the results. In the Bravo poll, 58% of participants said they supported passage of a law that licensed and strictly regulated online gambling. That’s still a significant majority, but eight points less than the question that included mentions of funding for education and whatnot.

Danish online gambling survey finds one in seven gambling with international sites

The Danish Online Gambling Association (DOGA) says one in seven Danes continues to play with sites not holding a Danish license.

Denmark’s regulated online gambling market grew 20% in 2014 and the country’s transition from a monopoly enjoyed by state-owned firm Danske Spil to a competitive online gambling market has been celebrated as a model for other European states to follow. But a new DOGA survey says sites licensed outside Denmark continue to enjoy significant popularity.

DOGA enlisted the MyResearch agency to conduct a survey of 4,131 Danish adults’ online gambling habits. The survey, conducted over a couple weeks spanning April and May, found that 21% of respondents had placed an online sports wager, while online poker and casino games each notched participation rates of 8%.

Of these online gamblers, 14% had patronized international sites not holding a Danish license. Sports betting attracted the lowest international participation rate (8%), while casino (23%) and poker (27%) scored significantly higher. Internationally licensed sports betting sites captured 10% of total Danish online gambling spending, rising to 17% for casino and 19% for poker.

America’s Best Racing Pays Homage to David Letterman – Sort Of

By @TheDailyPayoff
As the hype builds toward the Belmont Stakes next month and the final leg of the Triple Crown series, America’s Best Racing is joining the parade.
Seizing on the David Letterman end-of-an-era craze – Dave’s last show is happening tonight – ABR thought it would try its hand at at Top 10 list.
Except for the fact that Letterman took over The Late Show five years into the Triple Crown drought and will leave before the spell has been broken, we are not sure what else the two have in common.
But like two weeks ago when the May-Pac fight and the Kentucky Derby happened on the same day, the convergence of the two major media events does have one goal in common.
As Letterman retires on a high note, American Pharoah also will attempt to go out a winner.

Here’s ABR’s Top 10 List
