UK online gambling ranks grow slightly more feminine in Q1

The ranks of UK online gamblers took on a slightly more feminine quality in the first quarter of 2015, according to the UK Gambling Commission’s latest gambling participation survey.

The percentage of study participants who gambled at least once in the past four weeks fell five points to 51%. Excluding the National Lottery, participation fell two points to 31%. Lotteries remain the top gambling choice, with 36% participating in National Lottery draws, 13% playing other lotteries and 9% buying scratch cards.

Sports betting participation – including the online variety – was unchanged at 4%, although the standalone online betting stat fell one point to 3%. The overall online gambling participation score (including lotteries) fell one point to 16%, while the non-lottery online stat fell one point to 9%.

In gender terms, the ranks of male gamblers fell six points to 55% while female participants fell three points to 48%. However, when it came to online gambling, male participants fell four points to 17% while female participation rose two points to 13%. Even when you exclude National Lottery online play, men were down two points to 11% while women gained one point to 8%.

Reports says NBA in talks with European betting firms over exclusive sponsorship

The National Basketball Association is reportedly talking with European online gambling companies about a potential marketing tie-up.

On Tuesday, BleacherReport.com reported that its sources were saying the NBA was having talks with several online sports betting firms – including but not limited to Bwin.party and William Hill – about becoming the leagues’ official betting partner in regulated European markets.

The NBA is allegedly seeking a “multiyear, multimillion-dollar sponsorship deal” that would include cross-platform branding on the NBA’s European broadcasts and the lucky betting firm’s sportsbooks.

Bwin.party’s New Jersey-licensed PartyPoker site already has a sponsorship deal with the NBA’s Philadelphia 76ers, although there’s no indication that this gives Bwin.party an inside track (and they’re not exactly rolling in spare cash). Whichever lucky firm rises to the top, the parties reportedly hope to conclude the deal this summer in time for the start of the new season in the fall.

Hogan names new Maryland lottery and gaming director

Former New York State Lottery chief Gordon Medenica has been named by Gov. Larry Hogan to head the Maryland agency overseeing five casinos and the state’s lottery system. Maryland Lottery and Gaming Control Agency director Stephen Martino, who oversaw the launch and rapid expansion of casino gambling in the state, is resigning at the end of the month.

Controlling Board approves lottery contracts, helicopter for highway patrol

The two companies involved with Ohio’s lottery games got multimillion-dollar unbid contracts, and the Ohio Highway Patrol got approval to buy a new helicopter in action Monday by the state Controlling Board. The legislative spending oversight panel approved a two-year, $72.5 million contract renewal for Greece-based Intralot, which has been operating the state’s traditional lottery and video lottery terminals since 2008.
