Bookie’s notebook shows Pete Rose bet on baseball as a player

ESPN has uncovered evidence that indicates Pete Rose bet on baseball games when he was still a player, which could derail Rose’s faint hopes of getting his name in Major League Baseball’s Hall of Fame.

On Monday, ESPN’s Outside The Lines reported obtaining a notebook belonging to Michael Bertolini, a convicted fraudster who handled Rose’s wagering with mob-linked bookies. The notebook, which was seized during a 1989 raid by US federal authorities and has been under court-ordered seal ever since, indicates that Rose placed wagers on baseball games in 1986, his final year as a player.

Rose was hit with a lifetime ban from baseball in 1989 after his betting activity was revealed but has been waging a campaign for reinstatement ever since. Rose, who amassed 4,256 hits during his lengthy playing career, would be a shoe-in for the Hall of Fame were it not for the suspension.

In 2004, after years of denials, Rose admitted to betting on baseball but has long maintained that he only bet on baseball while serving as the Cincinnati Reds’ manager. Bertolini’s notebook indicates that Rose bet on multiple games per day for days at a stretch in 1986, including wagers on Reds games, but there’s no evidence that Rose ever bet on the Reds to lose.

Latitude 360 acquire Major League Fantasy to support ‘fantasy sportsbooks’ plan

US restaurant and entertainment chain Latitude 360 has acquired daily fantasy sports (DFS) operator Major League Fantasy (MLF) in order to create the first live in-venue ‘fantasy sports books.’

Latitude 360 currently operates three properties in Florida, Indiana and Pennsylvania, with a new property under construction in Albany, New York and further expansion plans in Boston, Chicago, Minneapolis and New York City. Lattitude 360’s properties already include “HD Sports Theaters” which feature sportsbook-style video arrays displaying a variety of live sports events.

Terms of the deal weren’t disclosed, but Latitude 360 CEO Brent Brown promised that the new ‘360 Fantasy LIVE’ offering would be ready for this fall’s kickoff of the new NFL season. The plan is to add iPads to the sports theaters to enable DFS wagering, with new game modes, daily featured prize contests and “interactive tools not found on any of the current fantasy sites or apps.”

MLF CEO Jesse Merl said he couldn’t imagine “a better way to grow our audience than to make it accessible” to Latitude 360’s patrons. Merl said Latitude 360’s venues would ensure that “our competitors will be fighting for second place in the live real-money fantasy vertical we are creating.”

Chinese authorities arrest 14 Koreans for luring gamblers

Chinese authorities had arrested 14 South Koreans on Wednesday for allegedly trying to lure Chinese citizens into foreigner-only casinos in Korea.

The Koreans arrested were employees from travel agencies and two of South Korea’s largest casino operators— Paradise Co. and Grand Korea Leisure Co.

In February, China’s Ministry of Public Security Deputy Director Hua Jingfeng announced that authorities would pursue and prosecute operators from other countries who had “set up offices in China to attract and drum up interest from Chinese citizens to go abroad and gamble.
