Thailand should have casinos, says National Reform Council group

Some influential political figures believe Thailand needs to legalize casinos, if only to keep Thai gamblers at home where they belong.

On Monday, Major Arnun Watcharothai told The Nation that there were currently 22 casinos clustered just beyond Thailand’s borders and 80% of the gamblers inside these casinos are Thais. Arnun wants to permit casinos in specific areas like Pattaya so that Thai citizens – and casino taxes – don’t fly the coop.

Arnun is one of a dozen members of the National Reform Council (NRC) that have banded together under the banner of ‘NRC members who love Thailand.’ (Aim higher, guys.) The 250-member NRC, which was formed following last year’s military coup, has been tasked with implementing reforms across the Thai landscape, including the economy, society, law and justice.

The increased surveillance during the coup revealed that there are plenty of small illegal casinos already operating within Thailand, along with a thriving illegal sports betting market. But efforts to convince the pre-coup government to legalize the practice met with opposition from Buddhist groups and the matter was always dropped.

MGM Resorts says no new Vegas casinos, but mobile sports betting on the way

MGM Resorts CEO Jim Murren says his firm is done building new casinos in Las Vegas.

Speaking to the Las Vegas Review-Journal’s Howard Stutz, Murren said that it’s “not my expectation during my career here that we will build another casino resort in Las Vegas.” Murren says he doesn’t “see the value proposition, the need and the business case that could be made” for spending billions on another Vegas casino.

MGM boasts more properties on the Las Vegas Strip than any other casino operator, but Murren believes “the era of expanding casino floors is over.” With gaming’s share of overall Strip revenue currently down to a little more than one-third, Murren believes “the evolution of the casino floor will be to shrink them.”

This new vision is being driven by younger Vegas visitors, who have shown little appetite for parking themselves in front of a slot machine for hours at a stretch. Most of these visitors have casinos in their home states, and Murren believes they come to Vegas seeking “one-of-a-kind experiences” they can’t get back home.

Fan Duel, DraftKings Ramp Up Their Content Play

Fan Duel, DraftKings Ramp Up Their Content Play

Last Wednesday at the worldwide headquarters of Topps, media types from outlets big and small gathered to talk to San Francisco Giants star Buster Posey as he talked about his new role as ambassador with the company, as well as the no-hitter he had caught the night before. The usual suspects were there for a piece of Posey, Sports Illustrated, Yahoo, AOL Sports and Fan Duel.

Wait, Fan Duel? Was there a pay fantasy element involved? Nope, but Brandon Lee from the company’s news site, was there asking questions about the no-hitter and the world of trading cards, with nary a fantasy question being bandied about. Why? Good content to keep the die-hard fantasy player more engaged on the site, and through search, to probably pull in more casual fans interested in news for now, but maybe, just maybe, they will become brand loyal enough to join in for a paid daily game or two down the line.

It is a strategy that Fan Duel Insider is embracing more and more, and as expected is also being taken on more and more by DraftKings, who, according to a weekend story in the Boston Globe, have made a huge push in hiring their own editorial staff for their content platform, Playbook, just for the same purpose; provide original non-fantasy content that feeds the needs of the fan while keeping the core player interested and on the site just a little bit longer. Engaged core players may play a bit more, while new fans may come back.

Now this is not to say that the core news and information on both sides won’t be tied to analytics and the core gamer and fantasy news. Providing that audience with core news that helps them address fantasy issues is still tantamount. However, fantasy players cannot live by stats alone, so feeding in additional anecdotal news, video highlights and original content lifts the interest and the engagement of the anyone with an affinity to sports news. The other thing such news may do will keep engaged consumers on the site, versus going to traditional news sites like ESPN or Yahoo or SI.com for the non-fantasy information. If you can hold their attention, the better chance of building more engaged audiences for things other than fantasy.

The expansion into original content follows some of the other larger marketing initiatives that both companies have used to gain the attention of the consumer. While not into boxing per se, Fan Duel spent money to sponsor Floyd Mayweather Jr., while Draft Kings cashed in on a somewhat unconventional spend against the Belmont Stakes, grabbing great exposure in places like the cover of Sports Illustrated with their signage. Neither spoke directly to the core pay fantasy audience, but it helped remind casual fans that the companies are engaged on the business of sports, albeit mostly in the pay fantasy business.

Will such investments pay off? According to the Globe article, since a redesign in March, average page views per visit have increased 52 percent and time on the site is up 152 percent for Draft Kings, while Fan Duel’s insider content has also seen a spike in visits. Neither can say yet if that spike has led to more pay fantasy money being spent, but the feeling is probably more eyeballs more of a chance of engagement. The use of news content is also much more cost-effective than some of the other high ticket promotions and ad spends the company has done, and with partners coming on board more prolifically; ESPN and MLB with DraftKings, the NBA with FanDuel, the ability to share content and gain traffic is probably just a bit easier, especially if their staffs can become accredited members of the media with the ability to gain content at events. That content would probably include unique video, which remains king for drawing audiences.

So while you will probably continue to see ore on the sponsor spend side than on the news gathering side for both, or any, fantasy sports company, it is interesting to see how important well-rounded and expansive content is becoming as the battle for casual engaged consumers heats up across the summer.

Will Macau allocate scarce new gaming tables to Louis XIII luxury casino?

Doubts are being raised as to whether the Louis XIII luxury hotel-casino project currently being built in Macau will be allocated any gaming tables.

Last week, Macau Legislative Assembly member Au Kam San made an inquiry into whether the government had plans to approve casino operations in Coloane, the 7.6-square-kilometer district adjacent to Cotai. Au Kam San specifically mentioned the long-stalled Golden Cotai No. 1 project backed by Hong Kong businessman Cecil Chao Sze-tsung as well as the infinitely more current Louis XIII project, which is believed to be targeting a mid-2016 opening.

In response, Macau’s Secretary for Economy and Finance Lionel Leong Vai Tac issued a statement saying there were no apparent legal restrictions against operating casinos in Coloane but that the government would “heed the people’s views” on adding gaming to Macau’s “only casino-free island.”

Speaking later to reporters, Leong clarified that the government had yet to receive any requests to open casinos in Coloane. Without mentioning either of the proposed Coloane projects by name, Leong noted that only Macau’s licensed casino concessionaires have the authority to make requests to open new casinos.

Evolution Gaming inks Games Marketing deal, appoints new Malta CEO

Live dealer casino specialist Evolution Gaming has inked a six-year deal to incorporate Games Marketing‘s proprietary games content and side bets into Evolution’s offering.

The six-year deal expands on the companies’ existing relationship, which incorporated the London-based Games Marketing’s side bets into Evolution’s Live Blackjack product. The new deal adds six titles from Games Marketing’s 40-game portfolio, the first of which will begin to appear on Evolution’s offering later this year.

Evolution recently appointed Martin Carlesund (pictured) as the new CEO of Evolution’s Malta operations. Carlesund, who previously served as CEO of the Highlight Media Group affiliate operation, will report directly to Evolution CEO Jens von Bahr. Evolution launched its Malta studio last year to complement its 1,000-strong staff at its primary hub in Latvia. Von Bahr said the appointment would allow him to “focus solely on building long-term shareholder value on group level.”

Evolution is preparing to launch its new live dealer studio in Belgium’s Casino de Spa by the end of this month. The Belgian Gaming Commission has warned all live dealer outfits currently supplying services to BGC- licensed operators that they must have Belgian-based studios up and running by July 1 or both they and their clients will face the BGC’s wrath.
