Editorial: Squeeze Georgia Lottery to keep HOPE alive

State lawmakers are rightly trying to squeeze more revenue out of the Georgia Lottery Corp. to support the state’s popular but struggling HOPE scholarship and pre-kindergarten programs. During a joint meeting of the temporary committees created by the House and Senate to study the issue, lawmakers are looking for ways to address the shrinking share of tuition that the scholarships cover.

Aquis to give Canberra casino a $330 million makeover

Tony Fung’s Aquis Entertainment is giving its newly-purchased Canberra Casino a $330m revamp to lure additional 700,000 visitors annually.

The two-stage revamp proposal includes VIP and mass gaming facilities, six-star villa accommodation, a five-star hotel, retail food and beverage and a shopping mall. A 3,300 sqm extension to the National Convention Center is also part of the plan.

Aquis Entertainment Executive Director Justin Fung said the current Canberra Casino, which Aquis bought in 2014 for $6m, is a small, local gaming facility lacking a “wow factor”.

Research conducted by Deloitte Access Economics noted economic gains from the casino redevelopment such as creation about 200 full-time construction jobs; 420 new jobs ongoing; and Gross Territory Product of up to $61m per annum.

Georgia lawmakers consider casinos, horse racing to fund scholarship programs

Georgia voters may soon decide whether to allow casinos in the state, with some of the proceeds going to the HOPE scholarship and pre-kindergarten programs.

A discussion between lawmakers regarding legislation that would allow casinos to set up shop in Georgia took place at a standing-room only hearing on Monday.

Atlanta is one of the largest metropolitan areas in the US that does not have some form of Las Vegas-style gaming, but efforts to introduce a casino bill in the past has been met with short shrift by the legislature.

State Rep. Ron Stephens has introduced legislation in March proposing a constitutional amendment to overturn the state’s ban on casino gambling, as well as a bill that would limit the number of casinos in the state to just six in five specific geographic areas.

DFS lobbies for blessings of Florida lawmakers; NJ court calls on leagues to respond to sports betting case appeal

Daily fantasy sports sites FanDuel and DraftKings are setting their sights on getting the blessings of the Republican-led Florida Legislature.

The two companies have set aside their rivalries to hire a prominent lobbying firm in Tallahassee as concerns over the legality of daily fantasy sports in the state arise, Bay News 9 reported.

According to the news outlet, Fantasy Sports Trade Association hired lobbyist Brian Ballard and his team “to establish a presence in Tallahassee and begin educating legislators about the dynamics of fantasy sports.”

In an interview with Legal Sports Report, FSTA Chairman Peter Schoenke said they “continue to boost the FSTA’s resources in states with a large number of fantasy sports players to ensure that residents there can continue to fully play.”
