Thailand proposes ‘great firewall’ to police internet content

Thailand’s government is denying reports that it plans to introduce a Chinese-style ‘great firewall’ to block objectionable internet content, including international online gambling sites.

Last week, word surfaced that Thai authorities were planning to create a single entry point for international internet traffic, through which all existing gateway facilities would be required to route their services. An official report from a cabinet meeting said the gateway would allow the government to “control inappropriate websites and the influx of information and news from overseas to Thailand.”

Public reaction to the proposal has been stridently negative and Thailand’s Minister of Information and Communication Technology Uttama Savanyana has attempted to dampen the outrage, saying the gateway was intended to “serve basic economic needs, not for national security purposes.” Uttama told the Bangkok Post that the government wouldn’t force existing gateways to share facilities “but will ask for voluntary access to the gateway.”

On Monday, Agence France Presse quoted a ministry spokesman saying the Thai public would be updated on the proposal soon. The original cabinet document, which was finalized in July but only published last week, specified a target date for implementation by the end of the current fiscal year, which closes out Sept. 30.

Men take greater financial risks after exposure to masculine stereotypes

Gambling firms would do well to include more stereotypical examples of masculinity in their marketing, as researchers have concluded that men take greater financial risks after exposure to such material.

Francesco D’Acunto, a researcher at the University of California, Berkeley’s Haas School of Business, conducted a series of experiments designed to examine if risk-taking behavior can be manipulated by priming test subjects with examples of gender identity. D’Acunto’s research showed men were far more likely than women to take greater risks after exposure to such material.

D’Acunto ran a series of tests in which subjects were asked to play a lottery-style game with varying degrees of risk and reward. Male subjects were then asked to read blocks of text containing stereotypical examples of how a masculine person behaves, while female subjects read examples of stereotypical feminine behavior, and control subjects read text describing ayurvedic principles for a healthy lifestyle.

The subjects were then presented with another round of lottery games. The men who’d been primed with examples of manly men doing manly things were found to be more risk-tolerant in their lottery choices, while the effect on women was negligible.

Junket Neptune Group considers shutting down VIP business

Macau junket operator Neptune Group has posted a net loss of HKD828 million ($103m) for the fiscal year ended June 30 due to the “spectacular slowdown” in the local VIP gaming industry.

According to its filing with Hong Kong Stock Exchange on Friday, Neptune Group Ltd’s gaming revenue is down by 33% year-on-year to HKD473.6 million, driven by the plunges in revenues generated by its three VIP rooms in The Venetian Macao, Sands Macao and Grand Lisboa, which dropped 38.2%, 32.3% and 25.2% year-on-year, respectively.

The revenues generated by its previous VIP room in StarWorld Hotel, of which the business has already ceased, also dived by nearly 60% for the year.

The decline in VIP gaming business led its EBITDA loss to reach HK$997.8 million, a huge slide of 292.8% year-on-year to HKD1.52 billion, compared to an EBITDA of HKD517.6 million last year, a loss prompting the company to think about shutting down the business.

Bookmakers drop Michel Platini as favorite to replace Sepp Blatter

Michel Platini’s dream to succeed Sepp Blatter is under threat as both to be under investigation by FIFA ethics committee.

The Office of the Attorney General of Switzerland (OAG) opened a criminal investigation against FIFA president Sepp Blatter for possible criminal mismanagement and misappropriation of FIFA money.

The OAG said in a statement that Blatter made a “disloyal payment” of 2 million Swiss francs to Platini in early 2011 for work carried out between 1999 and 2002. Allegations also relate to World Cup broadcasting contracts Blatter agreed to with disgraced former FIFA vice president Jack Warner in 2005.

“There is as suspicion that, in the implementation of this agreement, Blatter also violated his fiduciary duties and acted against the interest of FIFA,” the OAG said.
