Scottish librarian scores record mobile jackpot playing Gala Bingo slot

Online gambling technology provider Playtech and online gambling operator Gala Coral Group claim to have set a new record for the biggest mobile slots jackpot in the UK.

On Monday, Playtech announced that an unidentified librarian from Glasgow had won £4.5m playing the appropriately named Jackpot Giant slot on GalaBingo.com.

The company claims the prize is the biggest mobile slots prize ever handed out to a UK punter, the largest ever on a Playtech-powered bingo site and its second biggest progressive jackpot payout behind only a £6.2m prize in 2012.

The unknown librarian claimed to have picked up her mobile and begun spinning slots reels while at home watching TV, apparently because whatever was on the telly was insufficiently captivating. The winner, who spent just £4 on her lucky spin, claimed to still be in “a complete state of shock,” which probably explains why she went back to work the following day instead of immediately moving to Ibiza.

UK lottery jackpot winner could lose out on £33m after accidentally washing ticket

An English granny may have scrubbed her chances of collecting a £33m lottery jackpot after accidentally washing the winning ticket.

On Sunday, UK media identified 48-year-old Worcester resident Susanne Hinte as one of two winners of the National Lottery’s record £66m jackpot earlier this month. Trouble is, the grandmother of four isn’t sure she can collect after accidentally leaving the ticket in a pair of jeans that she put through the wash.

According to Hinte’s daughter, the winning numbers on the ticket are faded but still legible. However, the washing machine managed to scrub off the ticket’s date, bar code and serial number, and National Lottery operator Camelot is noncommittal about Hinte’s chances of cashing her alleged winner.

A Camelot spokesman said the company had instructed Hinte to submit the ticket along with as much identifying detail as possible regarding where and when she purchased the ticket, as well as whether or not she selected the six winning numbers by herself or let the machine choose the numbers.

Swedish internet service provider sounds alarm over gambling IP-blocking plans

An internet service provider in Sweden is sounding the alarm over the government’s plan to IP-block unauthorized online gambling sites.

Over the weekend, leading Swedish ISP Bahnhof released a statement saying it had received an email from an investigator hired by the Swedish government to consider ways to “efficiently” prevent unauthorized online gambling operators from offering services to Swedish gamblers.

Sweden’s government is in the process of revising the country’s legal landscape for gambling, which will see the end of state-owned operator Svenska Spel’s online betting monopoly and the licensing of independent online operators.

As part of this process, specifics of which won’t be made public until March 2017, steps would be taken to ensure that operators who lack a new Swedish license are unable to serve Swedish punters. Bahnhof says the government investigator has asked for a meeting in which to discuss the ISP’s role in this plan.
