Nevada casino gaming revenue falls despite record sports betting handle

Nevada casino gaming revenue fell in January despite state-licensed sportsbooks setting a new January record for betting handle.

According to figures released Friday by the Nevada Gaming Control Board, statewide casino gambling revenue fell 2.87% to $925.3m. Things were worse on the Las Vegas Strip, which reported gaming revenue down 7.7% to $522.3m, while downtown was up 8.8% to $42m, Laughlin improved 6.9% to $42.4m and Reno slipped 2.8% to $42.6m.

As one has come to expect, baccarat was the primary cause of the Strip’s decline, as the game’s win fell 26% to $101.8m despite a respectable 16% hold. Blackjack was also down, falling 6.8% to $91.1m, while roulette gained 1.5% to $35m and craps rose 12.9% to $31.7m.

The rest of the table game chart reads as follows: three-card poker ($12.6m, -7.6%), pai gow poker ($9.1m, -5.2%), mini-baccarat ($8.5m, +23%), let it ride ($2.8m, -13.1%), keno ($2.2m, +16%) while ‘other games & tables’ improved 9.7% to $17.2m and poker fell 2.9% to $9.5m. Slots revenue was up 3.2% to $579.3m.

The fight over the Wynn casino, explained

Wynn Resorts announced this week that construction of its planned Everett casino and hotel was “effectively on hold,” and that a spring groundbreaking would be delayed. The company blames Somerville Mayor Joe Curtatone for the delay because Curtatone’s administration filed an appeal of an environmental permit for the $1.7 billion resort.

Florida Poker Player Robbed After Casino Win, Suspects Captured by GPS on Victim’s iPhone

A South Florida poker player who was robbed can thank his phone’s GPS location services, and the less-than-brilliant acumen of the suspects who allegedly robbed him. Scott Robbins, a 49-year old professional poker player, had just won $2,000 at a casino in Pompano Beach, Florida. Robbins, a native of Massachusetts, was probably feeling pretty high […]

House committee backs casino gambling in Georgia

The Regulated Industries Committee has unanimously approved a bill and accompanying constitutional amendment that would allow up to four casinos around the state

The constitutional amendment, House Resolution 807, would ask voters in a statewide ballot this fall whether they allow casinos in the state. If it’s approved, voters in each region would then decide if they want a casino in their area.

Meanwhile, under a new version of the House Bill 677, casinos’ state tax rate increased to 20% from the original 12% proposal. At least 90% of the tax would go toward education, including the HOPE Scholarships program.

The number of the casinos has also been reduced from six casino resorts to four, which a primary and secondary to be located in the metro region and the two in other parts of Georgia.

American Poker Awards Honour Mike Sexton & Kevin Mathers

The Global Poker Index American Poker Awards are in the bag. Mike Sexton and Kevin Mathers were honoured with a lifetime achievement and special jury awards

The Global Poker Index (GPI) American Poker Awards (APA) are in the bag. My plan was to stay awake all evening and tweet win-by-win but the speed of the Global Poker League (GPL) Draft made that impossible.

Talking about speed:

Byron Kaverman was awarded the GPI Player of the Year award. Kelly Minkin picked up the Female Poker Player of the Year award.

Gamesman beat Target by 100%

Gamesman marked its 19th consecutive appearance at ICE, with a record breaking donation to charity.  The gaming equipment components and systems manufacturer confirmed that it had raised a total of £50,000, to be shared between the Royal Marsden Cancer Charity and Mesothelioma UK.  The total is double the fundraising target Gamesman set itself 12 months previously at ICE 2015.

Reflecting on the success of the campaign, Gamesman’s Mark Smith said: “When we made the pledge to raise £25,000 for our two charity partners, it was to be honest, something of a leap in the dark.  However, and thanks to the fortitude, determination and tremendous generosity of the team at Gamesman, our colleagues and our customers in the international casino industry, we not only achieved our target – we doubled it!  £50,000 is a wonderful sum and I know that Mesothelioma UK will be using its share to help pay the salary of one of its nursing team.”

He added: “James Cove, our Technical Director and dear friend, contracted this particularly aggressive form of lung cancer aged just 43 and it was fantastic that he was with us at ICE, as he has been for each of the previous 18 years.

“My sincere thanks go to everyone in the industry who has supported us so generously and to Kate Chambers and the team at ICE for, once again, putting on such a magnificent event for the global industry, for helping us to launch Target 25K at ICE 2015 and complete, what turned out to be Target 50K at ICE 2016, Gamesman’s ‘home show’.”
