Gamesman beat Target by 100%

Gamesman marked its 19th consecutive appearance at ICE, with a record breaking donation to charity.  The gaming equipment components and systems manufacturer confirmed that it had raised a total of £50,000, to be shared between the Royal Marsden Cancer Charity and Mesothelioma UK.  The total is double the fundraising target Gamesman set itself 12 months previously at ICE 2015.

Reflecting on the success of the campaign, Gamesman’s Mark Smith said: “When we made the pledge to raise £25,000 for our two charity partners, it was to be honest, something of a leap in the dark.  However, and thanks to the fortitude, determination and tremendous generosity of the team at Gamesman, our colleagues and our customers in the international casino industry, we not only achieved our target – we doubled it!  £50,000 is a wonderful sum and I know that Mesothelioma UK will be using its share to help pay the salary of one of its nursing team.”

He added: “James Cove, our Technical Director and dear friend, contracted this particularly aggressive form of lung cancer aged just 43 and it was fantastic that he was with us at ICE, as he has been for each of the previous 18 years.

“My sincere thanks go to everyone in the industry who has supported us so generously and to Kate Chambers and the team at ICE for, once again, putting on such a magnificent event for the global industry, for helping us to launch Target 25K at ICE 2015 and complete, what turned out to be Target 50K at ICE 2016, Gamesman’s ‘home show’.”

UFC 196 Predictions – What Have You Done To My Main Event?

The great irony surrounding UFC 196 is that it was supposed to have a different main event. The March 5th card, which takes place at MGM Grand, will be headlined by Conor McGregor and Nate Diaz. The latter is filling in for lightweight champion Rafael Dos Anjos, who is out with a broken foot.

UFC 196 was originally headlined with a UFC Heavyweight Championship match between Fabricio Werdum and Cain Velasquez. Things changed when Velasquez suffered a back injury to go along with his hampered shoulders and knees. So Stipe Miocic happily threw his name in to the octagon…only for Werdum to pull out of the fight (very conveniently) with a back injury.

So Dana White and the brass upstairs decided to shift UFC 196 from pay-per-view to free television, giving it a new main event where the unheralded Stephen Thompson throttled former welterweight champion Johnny Hendricks. The event was re-branded UFC Fight Night 82.

To recap, the UFC 196 main event has featured eight guys ranging from the current featherweight champion all the way to the current heavyweight champion. It’s been a mess. The whole things feels cursed.

Swedish school gunning for country’s next female eSports star with elite gamers’ training

A school in Sweden is on the lookout for its next eSports star.

And in its hopes to find the country its next top female gamer, adult education center Strombacks Folkhogskola is gearing up to launch a one-year course in eSports that focuses on the Counter Strike franchise.

In an interview with The Local, course administrator Johan Agren said they were inspired by a school in Norway, which has a similar course. That school was the Garnes Videregående Skole, the first educational institution in the West to add eSports to its curriculum. At the Norwegian school, students have the option to select five hours of gaming instead of participating in sports such as soccer, basketball or baseball.

“Part of our job as educators is to be where the people are, and this is incredibly huge at the moment,” Agren told the Swedish news outlet.

Revenant fever: The gaming legacy of Indian tribes

This weekend will see if the film, The Revenant, will collect a plethora of film awards, including Leonardo DiCaprio’s coveted Oscars. But before we go into the game of will he or will he not—win the best actor award, that is—let’s take a look into how the Native Americans invested in areas, particularly gaming, in the nineteenth century.

The movie, directed by Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu, is a classic survival tale that follows fur trapper Hugo Glass as he traverses the wilderness of North America. At the same time, the film also offers a glimpse at the tribes who called these territories home.

But what has become of these tribes today? There are currently 326 Indian reservations with 566 federally recognized tribes. One of these groups was the Arikara—the tribe that Glass came into contact with several times—now live in the Fort Berthold Reserve and form one of the federally recognized “Three Affiliated Tribes” in North Dakota. And like many other tribes, the Arikara have gone into the gaming industry and founded the 4 Bears Casino in New Town.

Casinos have played an important part in enabling tribes to get an income. According to a Unibet study, the success of Indian casinos began in 1970 when the Supreme Court declared that “not only do states not have authority to tax Indians on Indian reservations, but they also lack the authority to regulate Indian activities by Indians on Indian reservations.”

The Global Poker League (GPL) looks more like a league after the bulk of the jigsaw pieces merged during one hell of a night at the SLS Hotel in Beverly Hills.

Wynn shelves Everett project indefinitely as Somerville refuses to back down on casino issue

The planned spring groundbreaking for Wynn Resorts’ Everett casino and other activities related to the project are now “effectively on hold,” the casino operator announced on Thursday.

In a press conference, Wynn Everett President Robert DeSalvio said the move was a result of Somerville Mayor Joseph Curtatone’s appeal that questions the environmental permit that Wynn Everett received from the Department of Environmental Protection early this year.

“All of that, due to this appeal that was put in by the city of Somerville,” DeSalvio said, according to Boston.com. “With these announcements, basically, the construction of the Wynn resort is effectively on hold.”

In addition, a project-related hiring freeze will go into effect. This new setback is expected to not only affect the thousands of construction workers who will build the casino resort, but also the thousands others who are expected to be hired when the complex opens.

Why I Quit Print Journalism for Online Gambling

I was always convinced I would make my living writing about sports. I just never imagined it would be like this.

A dozen years ago, at the tender age of 24, I interviewed members of the Indianapolis Colts in their dressing room while Peyton Manning was getting dressed five feet away. I sat courtside at the media table at an NBA game. I conducted 1-on-1 interviews with young hockey prospects who later developed into NHL stars.

And I thought nothing of it. This was my path. This was normal.
