Poll claims Thailand residents want legal casinos; Cambodia junket murder mystery

Thailand should legalize casino gaming to boost government revenue and eliminate the need for Thai gamblers to travel abroad, according to the results of a new survey.

Sungsidh Piriyarangsan, dean of Rangsit University’s College of Social Innovation, held a press conference on Thursday to reveal the results of a survey of 2,500 Thai residents on the question of casino gambling. Sungsidh claims the survey found broad support for legalizing casinos, particularly among middle-income earners.

According to local media reports, Sungsidh further claimed that legal casinos would boost Thailand’s international tourism by 40–50%. Quite apart from the tourism boost, Sungsidh believes the government stands to collect an additional THB 100b (US $2.8b) per year simply by licensing and taxing casinos.

Sungsidh also presented the findings of two other studies on the casino question, one of which held up Singapore’s regulatory model as a good template, particularly for its requirement that local residents demonstrate the financial capacity to endure gambling losses.

GPL Draft Round Up: Esfandiari Last Minute Drop Out; Moneymaker Gazumps Ladouceur and More

The Global Poker League Draft is in the books and what a night it was with Antonio Esfandiari dropping out at the last minute, Chris Moneymaker gazumping Marc-Andre Ladouceur and more.

If that’s what ‘sportifying‘ poker looks like, then I am hungry for more. The Global Poker League (GPL) Draft is in the books. The Team Managers now have a fortnight to fill in the missing pieces. Here is a full rundown of events.

A panel of Joe Stapleton, Eric Danis, Daniel Negreanu, and Phil Hellmuth orchestrated the event. The lineup was pure genius. Danis played the part of the stat geek to perfection, and Stapleton did an excellent job with the conductors baton.

I initially wanted to see both Negreanu and Hellmuth in the draft, but I’m glad they weren’t. Not only did they bring credibility to the table, but the wisecracks and ‘professional’ disagreements were hysterical.

Danish online casino and sports betting revenue rises, poker falls

Denmark’s regulated gambling market closed out 2015 on a high note, with significant growth in licensed online gambling operator revenue.

Figures released this week by Danish gaming regulator Spillemyndigheden showed combined sports betting and online gambling revenue rising 21% to DKK 910m (US $134.4m) in the three months ending Dec. 31, 2015. Spillemyndigheden started 2016 with 15 licensed betting operators and 35 licensed online casinos.

Betting was both the largest vertical and Q4’s biggest gainer, rising nearly 32% to DKK 560m. For the year as a whole, betting revenue improved 14% to DKK2.03b.

Sadly, Spillemyndigheden doesn’t break out separate numbers for online and land-based wagering. Regardless, the betting market picked up speed throughout the year, having posted average quarterly growth of between 5-10% over the first nine months of 2015.

Champions League Round of 16 Update: Messi Inspired Barcelona Cruise Past Arsenal

Our round-up of the Champions League Round of 16 sees Lionel Messi hitting two to push aside Arsenal, Cristiano Ronaldo scoring his 12th of the campaign in a victory over Roma, and Man City take a peek behind the door of the last eight for the first time in the clubs history.

Barcelona remains the favourites to retain their Champions League crown after a comfortable victory over Arsenal at the Emirates in the Round of 16.

It seems the only way to play against Barcelona is to let them have the ball, hope the trident up front has an off day, and to capitalise on some sloppy defending at the back.

Amaya’s PokerStars and Full Tilt brands to launch in New Jersey on March 21

Amaya Gaming’s PokerStars and Full Tilt brands will launch in New Jersey’s regulated online gambling market on Monday, March 21.

On Thursday, Amaya announced the long awaited return of PokerStars and Full Tilt to US shores, nearly five years after both sites’ forcible expulsion from the market following the April 15, 2011 Black Friday online poker indictments.

Amaya said it expects to conduct an interim testing period with the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement (DGE) and a beta period with a limited player base will commence in “mid-March.”

Both brands will operate via the Pokerstarsnj.com domain – Amaya began migrating Tilt players to the Stars platform earlier this month – and will be available via desktop, tablet and mobile devices. In addition to its flagship poker product, the site will also offer a full slate of casino options, including slots, blackjack, roulette, baccarat and video poker.

Donald Trump mulling Las Vegas casino joint venture with Phil Ruffin

Fresh off winning Nevada’s Republican presidential caucus, gerbil-headdress aficionado Donald Trump is reportedly looking to open his first casino in Las Vegas.

According to the Wall Street Journal, the Trump Organization – the holding company for Der Donald’s various business ventures – is mulling a 50/50 casino joint venture with Phil Ruffin, the billionaire owner of the Treasure Island Hotel and Casino on the Strip.

Ruffin and Trump are good friends and are already partners in the Trump International Hotel and Tower, which sits at the north end of the Strip across from Wynn Las Vegas. The proposed $100m casino would be built on a four-acre parcel of land adjacent to the hotel that currently serves as the hotel’s parking lot.

Ruffin, who was in attendance at Trump’s caucus victory party at Treasure Island this week, told the WSJ that the JV casino plans were very preliminary, and that there were as yet no architectural renderings, land surveys or other tangible signs that the plan is more than just talk. However, Ruffin said he plans to move this ball forward this year.
