Sixfold rise in Australian online bookies’ re-loadable debit card use

Australian sports bettors’ use of online bookmakers’ reloadable debit cards has risen sixfold in just one year, leading anti-gambling campaigners to warn that the cards make it too easy to wager.

Queensland-based payment processor eMerchants says $90m was loaded onto bookmaker-branded debit cards in the first half of the last financial year, up from $15m in the same period a year earlier.

The surge reflects the number of deals the ASX-listed eMerchants has struck with Aussie-licensed online bookies over the same span. Ladbrokes Australia got the ball rolling in 2014 and eMerchants has gone on to ink deals with Lads’ competitors CrownBet, Bet365 and Sportsbet.

Originally designed for withdrawal purposes, the cards allowed punters easy access to their winnings via cash machines and EFTPOS terminals. eMerchants has since launched its EachWay system, which allows punters to deposit cash to their online betting accounts and have the funds instantly available for wagering purposes.

New Jersey releases temporary regulations for skill-based casino games

New Jersey gaming regulators have released temporary regulations governing skill-based gaming products on casino floors.

On Tuesday, the Division of Gaming Enforcement (DGE) released its guidelines for skill-based games in Atlantic City casinos, making good on a promise it made to game developers and casino operators in October 2014.

The temporary regulations (viewable here) are modeled on guidelines adopted last year by Nevada regulators. This sincerest form of flattery is meant to ensure that a skill-based product approved in one state won’t have to undergo vetting delays in the other state.

The DGE has offered a further carrot for developers via its New Jersey First provision, which allows companies to fast-track the approval process if they submit their product to New Jersey prior to or simultaneously with any other jurisdiction or testing lab. Under this program, companies could have their product on casino floors within 14 days of submission.
