Bankruptcy judge rules bitcoin is ‘intangible property’

A U.S. district judge considering bitcoins are “intangible properties,” at least for the purposes of a bankruptcy case in California.

The court’s decision was in connection with a case filed by the bankruptcy trustee for bitcoin mining firm HashFast, which declared bankruptcy in 2014, CoinDesk reported.

The trustee wants Mark Lowe, a former promoter for the bitcoin mining firm, to return some 3,000 bitcoins that he claimed were “fraudulently transferred” to Lowe before HashFast’s collapse. The lawsuit, in turn, prompted the bankruptcy court to determine whether the digital currency should be treated as property or as currency.

If the virtual currencies were treated as currencies, Lowe will have to return the bitcoins at the value on the day they were transferred, which amounts to about $360,000. However, if the bitcoins were considered as properties, Lowe will have to shell out $1.3 million—the appreciated value of that 3,000 bitcoins.

Tasmania: Expect policy position on Federal Group’s gambling monopoly by Easter

Mark your calendars, ladies and gentlemen. The government of Tasmania vowed that its policy position on the extension of Federal Group’s exclusive gambling monopoly will be ready by Easter.

Federal Group, which operates the Wrest Point casino, has been enjoying a gambling monopoly in the state of Tasmania for a number of years. Federal Group’s current arrangement with Tasmania will expire in 2018, but the operator has been concerned that the government might change its gambling policy stance and finally allow other players to enter the local market.

On Monday, Treasurer Peter Gutwein announced that the government’s position on the gambling monopoly policy would be announced within six weeks.

Media outlet abc.net.au quoted Gutwein saying, “There will be no secret deals, the government will clarify its position within the next six weeks, and then Tasmanians will have the benefit of an open and transparent process.”

We Need to Talk About Sheldon

Both the Guardian and Politico ran stories today about Sheldon Adelson, last seen triggering the Las Vegas Review-Journal ‘s rapid self-destruction , and the GOP’s growing panic over his increasingly obvious absence from the primary process-or his money’s, really. Adelson, who spent upwards of $100 million trying to sway the 2012 presidential election, is essentially a single-issue candidate : His driving concern is not only maintaining but supplementing the diplomatic and military cover that the United States offers the state of Israel.

Topbetta pleads guilty to illegal gambling advertising over ‘No Lose Saturday’ campaign

A promotional campaign that Topbetta launched in 2014 is now causing trouble for the Australian sports betting company.

The NSW-based gambling company was ordered on Tuesday to pay more than AUS$15,000 in fines after pleading guilty on three counts of publishing gambling advertising on its website for its “No lose Saturday” campaign that ran between October 2014 and May 2015, according to Liquor and Gaming NSW.

The gambling regulator said Topbetta’s promotions offered NSW residents “a refund on any losing bet up to a maximum of $100 for all wagers placed on certain horsing events.” The perk was available to new members who joined and deposited money during the promotional period.

According to Liquor and Gaming, the advertising went against NSW’s Betting and Racing Regulation 2012, which forbids licensed gambling operators from publishing any promotion that “offers NSW residents any inducement to participate in gambling activity or open a betting account.”

Partypoker has experienced unexpected downtime on Saturday due to a system upgrade.

An unspecified network error has crashed PartyPokers system a day before the Powerfest kicks off on Feb 21st. According to the company, the system’s downtime was caused by “a routine update to the software deployed earlier this week.” Because of the interruption, Partypoker has chosen to back out from the update until the end of the four-week Powerfest Series.

“We understand the frustration felt by our players who had their tournaments cancelled and rest assured that we will honour all of the guaranteed prize pools in full for those tournaments that started before the technical issues arose last night,” said PartyPoker in a statement. “The customer support team is working around the clock to process these refunds. As you can appreciate this is a substantial task, but should you not receive your refund in the next day or two, please contact customer support who will be happy to assist you further.”

Powerfest series, starting with the Featherweight Week on Sunday, will collectively offer $5 million in guaranteed prizes and runs from Feb 21 through March 20. A total of 98 no-limit Hold’em tournaments will take place at PartyPoker tables
