Sands China gets another extension to complete Parisian Macao

The Macau government gives Sands China Ltd. another seven-month extension to complete its $2.7b Parisian Macao resort casino.

According to a statement by the Land, Public Works and Transport Bureau made to Tribuna de Macau, the deadline has been extended to November 2016, despite having a requirement to be completed by April of this year.

Sands China notified the authorities that its property on Macau’s Cotai strip might not meet its April 2016 opening target in May.

Sands initially planned to have a partial launch of The Parisian in November 2014 and a full launch in March 2015. But Sands did not meet the scheduled plan and confirmed that The Parisian will open its doors for business in April 2016.

William Hill to sponsor IBF World title fight

UK betting giant William Hill is banking on brand exposure through boxing as it signed a deal with Matchroom Boxing to sponsor the IBF world heavyweight.

Two undefeated boxers Charles “Prince” Martin and Anthony Joshua are set to face on April 9th at the O2 Arena in London, which will be screened on Live Sky Sport Box Office. The match is touted as one of the biggest sporting events this spring.

“Martin v Joshua is going to be a mega heavyweight title showdown and we’re delighted to have a real heavyweight global brand like William Hill on board,” said Eddie Hearn, Managing Director of Matchroom Sport. “I think it’s 50/50 fight. I normally agree with the bookies odds – but I think this fight will be a lot closer than William Hill have it.”

Martin travels to England for the first defense of the title that he landed in Brooklyn in January against Vyacheslav Glazkov. He also holds a 23-1-0 record with 21 wins by KO. While, Joshua, the 2012 Olympic champion in the super heavyweight division, is looking to extend his 15-0 record and win his first world title.

Police expose Macau hotel’s blue card scheme for frequent Chinese gamblers

An illegal immigration case led authorities in Macau to stumble upon a hotel’s scheme for its frequent Chinese gamblers, local media reported.

Local police arrested a Chinese man at the Outer Ferry Terminal last week, according to the Macau Business Daily. The man, surnamed Chen, had a blue card on him that identified him as a cleaning worker at a hotel in the city state. A blue card is a work permit issued to a non-resident who wants to work in Macau.

The man, however, told investigators that he was not a worker in the hotel, but he bought the work permit in 2014 from the hotel “to more easily facilitate his visits to the city for gambling.” Chen said he paid HK$50,000 (US$6,225) for the blue card, which he got through a friend in 2014.

Judicial Police refused to identify the hotel—but hinted that it was located “in the central area of the Peninsula”—because they are “still chasing” its agents and staff. Authorities believed the hotel “applied for blue cards for frequent Chinese gamblers to make money.”

Australian betting giant Tabcorp is ready enter the UK and Irish gambling markets in spring.

Tabcorp, in partnership with Rupert Murdoch’s News UK, is scheduled to launch Sun Bets within six months, reported The Financial Times.

“It is a natural step for us,” said David Attenborough, Tabcorp’s chief executive. “We have worked with News Ltd. closely in Australia and built up a high degree of trust. They have one of the strongest brands in the UK with half of the UK betting population regularly reading or engaging with The Sun.”

US insists John McManus not an Irish citizen when he won $17.4M

The government of the United States refused to back down on its stance that John McManus was not a resident of Ireland when he won close to $20 million from gambling in the United States, even though the businessman held an Irish passport.

The 64-year-old investor, racehorse owner and gambler filed a complaint in September at the U.S. Court of Federal Claims, in which he claimed the U.S. government “wrongfully withheld” $5.22 million to cover the taxes of his $17.4 million gambling winnings.

McManus—one of Ireland’s richest—won the money playing “either backgammon or poker” in 2012, but the payer sent $5.22 million to the Internal Revenue Service as withholding. This prompted the businessman to file a non-resident U.S. federal income tax return, citing a 1997 double-tax treaty between the U.S. and Ireland.

Income from gambling is taxable in the United States, but McManus’s lawyers said the man was a resident of Ireland in 2012, and under the country’s provincial tax structure, whatever income he earned outside the country is not subjected to tax. Instead, McManus has to pay a flat tax of €200,000 under the domicile levy.

The 88th Academy Awards Betting and Odds

Were you planning on betting the 88th Academy Awards? Well then do I have 1,500 words just for you! Yes, this is something you can actually bet on and in some categories the odds are so ridiculous that you can probably expect a likely outcome. But there is some underdog potential at this year’s Oscars, or as I like to call it: “Mad Max Versus The World”.

ODDS TO WIN BEST PICTURE

The Revenant -160, Spotlight +200, The Big Short +300, The Martian +6600, Mad Max: Fury Road +6600, Room +6600, Bridge of Spies +15000, Brooklyn +20000

Yes, like all of you I’m betting the 88th Academy Oscars as if Mad Max: Fury Road is stealing the show but it’s not happening. The George Miller instant classic is a +6600 outside shot along with one of my favorites from this past year in The Martian.
