Connecticut bill could block tribes’ commercial casino plan

A new bill that would require Connecticut to study its plan to build a third casino could put the Mashantucket Pequots and Mohegan tribes’ joint venture in danger.

In a Thursday meeting of the Connecticut House commerce committee, Rep. Chris Perone raised a concept for the bill that would require the state to study “the costs and benefits of establishing commercial gaming.”

The study would be an analysis on how a third casino would affect jobs and revenues in the state, as well as consider whether to broaden the site search beyond the I-91 and Hartford corridor.

“Let’s make decisions based on the analysis of our overall gaming climate in the state of Connecticut,” said Perone. “That’s what this is really about.”

Kangwon Land casino unfazed by South Korea’s tourism decline

South Korea’s Kangwon Land casino shrugged off last year’s market struggles to once again outperform its domestic competitors.

Kangwon Land, the only one of South Korea’s 17 casinos that local residents are allowed to access, reported revenue up 8.6% to KRW 406b (US $329.6m) in the three months ending Dec. 31.

Operating income improved a more modest 0.8% to KRW 120b, reflecting higher labor costs and increased contributions to a fund related to the region’s former coalmine, the closure of which devastated the local economy and prompted the decision to open the resort 16 years ago.

Kangwon Land’s Q4 profits nearly doubled to KRW 93b, in part due to a favorable comparison with Q4 2014, during which the operator was saddled with a one-off non-operating expense.

Indiana few steps away from legalizing daily fantasy sports

The debate over the legality of daily fantasy sports is intensifying but a number of states agree on one thing: it needs to be regulated.

S.B. 339, a bill that would legalize daily fantasy sports in Indiana, went before the House Public Policy Committee on Wednesday, after it passed the Senate by a vote of 38-11 earlier this month.

Discussion of the bill centred around whether the minimum age for players should be 18 or 21, and whether fantasy sports should count as a game of skill or a game of chance.

If passed, S.B. 339 would allow Indiana’s racinos and off-track betting operations to create their own fantasy sports games or sign contracts with an existing company. The bill would require companies to purchase licenses ranging from $175,000 to $335,000 a year.

Portugal’s Online Gambling Market May See New Licensure in March

Portugal’s online gambling market may see new licensure in March, according to reports emanating from Serviço de Regulação e Inspeção de Jogos headquarters.

The Portuguese online gambling market has resembled a spaghetti western for some time now.

The doors of the once vibrant online gambling halls are hanging from their rusted hinges; tumbleweed rolls down the dusty streets, the good guys have gone, and the undesirables have pitched up a few tents in the hope of grabbing the attention of those that are stuck.

It’s been more than six months since the likes of PokerStars, Full Tilt, and William Hill decided to shut up shop and leave the Portuguese market. It wasn’t a Bridges of Madison goodbye, more of a ‘see you soon’ sort of farewell.

UK bookies group slams The Times for “litany of non-evidenced” FOBT assertions

Sky Betting & Gaming has become the first online-only gambling operator to join the UK betting industry’s self-regulatory body.

On Thursday, Sky Betting & Gaming was officially welcomed as a member of the Senet Group, the betting industry watchdog whose charter members include prominent bookies Coral, Ladbrokes, Paddy Power and William Hill, along with more recent addition Scotbet.

Sky Betting is the first Senet member that conducts business purely via web and mobile channels, and Senet chair Wanda Goldwag said it was important that the group “have a leading operator in this space to inform the development of our code of conduct.” Sky Betting CEO Richard Flint said he was looking forward to “helping shape the group’s work on online gambling issues.”
