Hospital charity pulls prize home from lottery over legal pot grow-op

An Ontario hospital foundation pulled a Toronto-area home from its annual lottery prize offerings this week after realizing it backed onto a residence where legally grown marijuana sent out an “an intrusive odour,” but police in the community say there’s little they can do about such situations. The incident involving the Markham, Ont., home meant to be a prize in the Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation’s 2016 home lottery has highlighted the issue some neighbourhoods face with residences that hold Health Canada licences to grow marijuana for personal use.

Sands Casino leads Pennsylvania January gambling revenue

Sands Casino Resort Bethlehem once again led the pack in total gaming revenue in January.

According to figures released by the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board (PGCB), total revenue at the state’s 12 casinos in January came to $255.9 million compared to the $247 million that was collected in the same month last year. The Keystone State collected $108.85 million in gambling tax revenues

Slot machine operations generated a total of $184.8 million, representing a 2.1% improvement over the $180.9 million that was taken in January 2015. Parx Casino was the top earner gross slot machine revenue, making $30.9 million, followed by Sands Casino Resort Bethlehem with $23.4 million and Rivers Casino with $21.3 million.

According to PGCB, slot machine revenues were 5% higher during the first 21 days of the month, but a winter storm made it difficult for patrons to reach state casinos, and therefore resulted in lower than usual weekend revenues for gambling operators. Still, the state collected $98.75 million in slot machine tax revenues in January.

AFL club rejects sports betting deal, keeps poker machines

Australian Football League (AFL) club Richmond becomes the seventh Victorian club that traded a bookmaker sponsorship for a responsible gambling commercial hook-up.

The Tigers has signed a three-year partnership with the Victorian Responsible Gambling Foundation (VRGF), a deal which would precludes the club from having sports betting sponsors.

The club were sponsored by Sportsbet last year, but the deal was not renewed for this season.

Richmond now joins the majority of Victorian AFL clubs North Melbourne, Collingwood, Western Bulldogs, Hawthorn, Essendon and St Kilda that signed up for the foundation’s responsible gambling charter, leaving Carlton, Melbourne and Geelong as the remaining Victorian clubs to have relationships with sports betting agencies.

30 Resorts World Sentosa workers lose jobs amid gaming downturn in Asia

At least 30 people bade farewell to their jobs at Resorts World Sentosa during the Chinese New Year period.

In an email to CalvinAyre.com, Resorts World Sentosa clarified what happened was “not a lay-off but part and parcel of Resorts World Sentosa’s annual team member performance review.”

“We constantly review our operational resources to stay relevant in this rapidly evolving business environment,” a Resorts World Sentosa spokesperson told CalvinAyre.com. “As part of our efforts to improve our service delivery in our resort, staff performance appraisal and movement is integral of this effort.”

Seminole compact inches forward in Florida Senate

Gov. Rick Scott’s $3.1 billion gaming compact with the Seminole tribe is finally moving ahead in the Florida Senate—albeit in a different form—which could throw a wrench in the lawmakers’ ability to pass a gambling bill this session.

Senate President-designate Joe Negron, R-Stuart, believes “a pure gaming compact won’t pass,” which was why he submitted an amended proposal that will not only see six counties get slot machines, but will also allow race tracks with slots and card rooms as replacement for live racing.

The Senate Committee on Regulated Industries voted 8-4 in favor of Negron’s version.

In his speech before the Senate committee, Negron said the compact needs the vote of the lawmakers—divided between those who refuse a gambling expansion of any kind and those who represent constituents who want slot machines in their counties—to get further ahead in the Legislature.
