Iovation on The Cusp of a Nevada Gaming License

Tech company Iovation is on the cusp of being granted a Nevada Gaming license to offer geolocation services to regulated online gambling sites in the state despite having ties to one of the largest scandals in online poker history.

It’s May 2013, and Ultimate Poker decide to severe all ties with tech company Iovation after players react angrily to the reminder that they were the company that created the software for Ultimate Bet (UB), and the infamous ‘God Mode,’ that allowed Russ Hamilton and several key executives to steal $20m+ from unsuspected players.

Two years later, and the name of Iovation has risen to the surface of the Nevada online gambling scene once again, after freelancer Steve Brogan picked up that the Nevada Gaming Control Board (NGCB) had conditionally recommended them for a Nevada gaming license. Iovation co-founder Greg Pierson is one of those former UB executives thought to have benefited from the ‘God Move’ functionality.

The Nevada Gaming Commission (NGC) plan to make a decision during a hearing scheduled for Feb 18 at 10 am. If approved, they will be able to provide geolocation software to anyone looking to do business in the online gambling industry in Nevada.

Tatts Group profit rises thanks to “exceptionally strong online traction”

Australian wagering and lottery operator Tatts Group boosted its profits by over 5% in the first half of its fiscal year thanks to “exceptionally strong online traction.”

In the six months ending Dec. 31, Tatts revenue was up 6.5% to A$1.6b while net profit after tax gained 5.2% to $147m. Tatts credited the uptick to an online performance that was “nothing short of outstanding.”

Tatts’ mainstay lottery operations posted record revenue of $1.11b, up 9.6% year-on-year, thanks in part to 24 jackpots over the psychological $15m barrier, six more than the same period a year earlier. Online lottery sales were up nearly 35%, accounting for 13.2% of all lottery sales, compared to just 10.8% a year ago.

Tatts’ wagering division reported turnover up 3% to $2.14b but revenue fell 4% to $326m thanks to a string of favorites living up to their reputations. Here too, online wagering enjoyed significant gains, with turnover up 20.2% to an all-time high. Digital wagers accounted for 28.8% of overall turnover, up from 24.8% a year ago.

6-Plus Hold’em to Debut on iPoker Network

The iPoker Network has announced plans to launch a new derivative of poker known as 6-Plus Hold’em, a game promoted in Asia by none other than Phil Ivey and Tom Dwan.

August 10, 2015, was the date when I warned you that an online poker room would add 6-Plus Hold’em to their menu in a bid to attract more recreational players to the game. Six months later and the iPoker network are the first to take up the opportunity.

According to press reports emanating from the kitchen at PokerStrategy, the new format will be added to the iPoker network on February 22, which by the way, and completely irrelevent to this story, was the date in 2006 when Apple’s iTunes store sold it’s billionth song.

Canada considers new single-game sports betting legislation

Canadian politicians have new sports betting legislation to consider, but it remains to be seen whether this latest effort will have any more success than its long-suffering predecessor.

On Wednesday, Brian Masse (pictured), member of parliament for Windsor West, introduced legislation in the House of Commons aimed at legalizing single-game sports wagering.

The bill,, which Masse has dubbed the Safe and Regulated Sports Betting Act, would delete a single section of Canada’s Criminal Code that would allow provinces and territories to authorize wagering on “any race or fight, or on a single sports event or athletic contest.” At present, the provincial lottery monopolies are restricted to multi-game parlay wagering.

Masse issued a statement suggesting that there may be a role for private firms to join the sports betting party. Masse described the current single-game sports betting environment as “nearly completely unregulated” but claimed that “firms operating in the so-called grey market sports are asking to be regulated.”

William Hill says merger of Gala Coral and Ladbrokes would be anti-competitive

Bookmaker William Hill has told the UK’s competition watchdog that the proposed merger of rivals Gala Coral Group and Ladbrokes would result in a “substantial lessening of competition” in the UK betting marketplace.

In a detailed submission filed last month, Hills urged the UK Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) to reject the proposed merger of Coral and Lads, much as the CMA did the last time these two parties tried to hook up in 1998.

Coral and Lads currently operate around 4k retail betting shops between them, and the CMA’s approval of a merger is expected to require the firms to sell off several hundred shops. Hills suggests that this divestment may address local competition concerns but “may not be capable of re-establishing the third national force which would be lost as a result of this merger.”

Hills acknowledges that the UK betting marketplace has undergone changes since 1998, particularly via the introduction of online gambling, but believes “those changes reinforce the concerns set out in 1998.”
