Bet365 first betting operator to secure naming rights on Premier League stadium
Privately-held UK online betting operator Bet365 has burnished its relationship with its hometown of Stoke-on-Trent by inking a naming rights deal for Stoke City FC’s home stadium.
On Thursday, Bet365 announced it had inked a six-year deal with the club to rename its home ground Bet365 Stadium starting with the 2016-17 English Premier League season. The stadium had been known as Britannia Stadium, but that brand was recently phased out following its absorption by The Co-operative Banking Group.
The deal marks a milestone in UK betting sponsorship ranks, as some operators have inked deals to get their name on a particular stand of a football ground, but Bet365 is the first betting operator to secure an EPL venue’s headline naming rights. The new deal will also see Bet365 extend its shirt sponsorship of Stoke City by another three years.
The negotiations were undoubtedly assisted by the fact that Stoke City FC is owned by the Coates family, whose patriarch Peter founded Bet365, while daughter Denise and son John run the betting company.

Russia’s plan to impose new 10% online sports betting tax has bookies spooked
Russia’s bookmakers are blinking back disbelief after their government proposed yet another tax on their online activities.
On Wednesday, Russia’s Ministry of Finance published a notice of its plans to amend federal law via the imposition of a 10% tax on online betting sales, effective December 2016. Public comment on the proposal is being solicited until May 5.
The 10% tax is on top of the recently announced RUB 2.5m to 3m (US $36,600 to $43,900) fees Russian bookies must pay each of the country’s 12 economic regions in order to accept online wagers from punters in those regions. Bookies have also recently been ordered to pay RUB 60m ($890k) per year to Russian sports federations.
As if that wasn’t bad enough, Russian bookmakers have expressed some confusion over what portion of their business will face the new 10% tax. The Ministry’s notice states that the tax applies to ‘sales,’ which most observers are reading as ‘revenue,’ but the actual bill has yet to be published and some bookmakers have suggested the tax will apply to online betting turnover.

Betfair US, Monmouth Park to launch New Jersey exchange wagering site on May 10
The US division of UK-listed online gambling operator Betfair will launch America’s first exchange wagering site next month.
Betfair US, now part of the Paddy Power Betfair behemoth, along with their Darby Development partners at New Jersey’s Monmouth Park racetrack, announced this week that exchange wagering would officially commence in the state on May 10.
A closed beta version of the site was made available on Monday to customers of 4NJBets, the New Jersey advance deposit wagering site run by Betfair offshoot TVG. Betfair also operates an online casino in the state in conjunction with Atlantic City’s Golden Nugget casino.
Betfair US was issued America’s first exchange wagering license last November, ending what had been a seven-year stretch of frustration and futility. Betfair US is believed to have spent upward of $10m in an unsuccessful attempt to convince racing stakeholders in other US states of the merits of exchange wagering.
