Portugal’s Online Gambling Licenses Expected in June

Portugal’s online gamblers will have to remain patient after a meeting between the gambling regulator Serviço de Regulação e Inspeção de Jogos do Turismo de Portugal (SRIJ), and the pro-online gaming faction Associação Nacional de Apostadores Online (ANAon) reveal the first licenses will be delayed until June.

And the date keeps getting knocked back.

It must suck balls to be an online gambler living in Portugal right now. Things were bumping along rather swimmingly until the Serviço de Regulação e Inspeção de Jogos do Turismo de Portugal (SRIJ) decided the whole system needed a shake up back in the early months of 2015.

The dam broke, murky grey waters rushed into the online gambling market, and rather than drown in the confusion of it all, most of the operators deflated their rubber dinghy and took it elsewhere.

Delaware Earns Record iGaming Revenues in March

Online gamblers in Delaware have been busy as the combined online gambling revenue from the state’s three racinos reached a record-breaking $260,539 mostly due to high video lottery numbers.

Supporters of the online gambling industry in Delaware are breaking out the party poppers as the state broke all previous records for combined monthly revenue in March.

Punters at Delaware Park, Dover Downs, and Harrington Raceway helped produce $260,539 in revenue, beating the previous best of $240,762 set in April 2014 by $19,777.

While the amount still represents a few winning hands of poker for the likes of Daniel ‘Jungleman’ Cates and co., it still represents an upward trend, one that has been following the same trajectory since the turn of the year.

Jose Mourinho Next Job Betting Odds: PSG Are Front Runners

Manchester United fans hopeful that Jose Mourinho will replace Louis Van Gaal at the end of the season will be a little worried after Sky Sports report that Paris St Germain is head hunting the former Chelsea man.

Jose Mourinho is the most sought-after coach in world football, a fact that has not sneaked passed the nose of Paris St Germain (PSG) chairman Nasser Al-Khelaifi.

When PSG crashed out of the Champions League to Manchester City, I questioned whether Laurent Blanc had taken them as far as he could? It was the fourth time that PSG had crashed out of Europe’s premier cup competition at the quarterfinals stage, and I knew the Qatar owners would want more for their significant investment. It seems I wasn’t alone in that thinking.

According to Sky Sports presenter Andy Burton, an unnamed source has told his news team that the PSG chairman approached Mourinho via his agent Jorge Mendes in the wake of that disastrous defeat against City. The ‘Special One’ has won the Champions League with Porto (2003-04) and Inter Milan (2009-10).

Canada’s ruling Liberal government opposes single-game sports betting bill

Canada’s push for single-game sports betting took a hit on Tuesday after the ruling Liberal party announced it would oppose the measure.

On Tuesday, Canada’s House of Commons held the second (of three) readings of Bill C-221, aka the Safe and Regulated Sports Betting Act, which would amend a single section of Canada’s criminal code to allow provinces and territories to decide whether to permit single-game sports wagers within their borders.

C-221 received a passionate introduction by its sponsor, New Democratic Party MP Brian Masse (pictured), whose voice was a little hoarse – which, in typical Canadian fashion, he blamed on having spent the previous day yelling at the youth hockey team he coaches – but whose oratory made sure his fellow MPs understood the opportunity at hand.

Masse repeated many of his earlier arguments in support of his private member’s bill, in particular the fact that single-game wagering is already taking place. Masse’s own research found that a Google search of ‘Canadian sports betting sites’ turns up around 530k hits.

Portugal Permits Online Poker Liquidity Sharing But Forgets to Legislate for Poker Networks

Portugal’s online poker and gambling reforms appear to be taking one step forward and two steps back at every possible opportunity. The good news is that the new gambling regime will permit liquidity sharing; the bad news is that someone forgot to create a B2B licensing system within the regulatory framework, which, for the time […]

Doyle Brunson Defeats Cancer Yet Again

Doyle Brunson is a tough man. Arguably the most legendary poker player of all-time, and maybe even the greatest depending on who you ask, Texas Dolly recently had another tough opponent on his hands…cancer. And just like he’s done at the poker tables for the past 50 years, Brunson came out on top. This was […]

New Jersey clarifies how dirty its online licensees can get in ‘grey’ markets

New Jersey’s gambling regulator has clarified its position on just how dirty its licensed online gambling operators are allowed to get via their dealings in legally ‘grey’ markets.

On Monday, David Rebuck, director of the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement (DGE), published an advisory bulletin on the “impact of operations in grey markets on suitability re licensure,” in which the DGE attempts to clarify what level of grey market operations it will tolerate among its online gambling licensees.

Rebuck says the DGE defines ‘grey’ markets as “jurisdictions where the legality of internet gaming operations is an open question,” while ‘black’ markets are those where governments have “taken affirmative, concrete actions to actively enforce laws that prohibit online gaming, or have issued unequivocal official pronouncements that online gaming is not legal.”

The DGE maintains that operators who do business in black markets “will not be able to establish the ‘good character, honesty and integrity’ required for licensure in New Jersey.”

GVC could face class action suit over aborted Canadian joint venture

UK-listed online gambling operator GVC Holdings is facing a potential class action lawsuit in Canada stemming from the collapse of an alleged joint venture involving its Sportingbet brand.

Ontario-based law firm Findlay McCarthy PC recently launched a website seeking submissions from Canadian sports bettors who registered with Sportingbet between 2005 and 2015.

The firm says it is considering a class action “seeking reimbursement on behalf of betters [sic] of all bets placed by Canadian residents” with Sportingbet during the period in question. The law firm said it also intends to seek “substantial punitive damages” against GVC should the allegations against the company prove correct.

The action is related to a suit filed last August by Doug Honeger, a Montreal-based sports and entertainment consultant, who claims his 37 Entertainment Inc (37E) entered into a joint venture with GVC to launch two Sportingbet-branded websites serving Canadian sports bettors.

Kentucky Lottery launches online draw ticket sales and instant win games

Kentucky’s state lottery has launched an online sales offering, bringing the number of US lotteries offering some form of online sales to four.

On Monday, the Kentucky Lottery’s website announced it was now offering online sales of both traditional draw tickets and instant win games. The state joins both Georgia and Michigan, which also offer draw tickets and instant win games, while Illinois currently offers only draw tickets online.

The launch of Play.kylottery.com, which is powered by International Game Technology, comes 18 months after the Kentucky Lottery Corp announced its intention to go online. The original launch target was Q3 2015 but encountered delays in ensuring the system was technologically secure, particularly in terms of geolocation services.

Players must have a verified Kentucky address and be physically present in the state to play online. Accounts can be funded online via credit or debit card or in person at the Lottery’s 3,200 retail points of sale. The Lottery has set online spending caps of $200/day, $500/week and $1k/month.
