Italian police busted network of Malta-based illegal online betting platforms

Another “wide network” of Malta-based illegal online betting platforms were uncovered by authorities in Italy, the Malta Independent has reported.

The operation, dubbed Master Bet, has led to the house arrest of at least 13 people, while 46 others had their commercial assets seized. In addition, some 107 people were interrogated in connection with the alleged fraud.

According to police in Catania, Sicily, “millions of euros each month” were laundered through complex networks of gambling websites operated by two criminal groups through their gaming platform situation in Malta.

Investigators said groups owned Italian-facing websites, which were being operated without permits using platforms registered in Malta. Catania police were able to trace the operations back to the two organizations “by monitoring telephone calls and other forms of communication,” according to the report.

13 Poker Players Who Would Make The Perfect X-Men

After Mystique showed that she can’t walk in a Christian Dior dress without falling on her ass, Lee Davy looks towards the world of poker to see if we have X-Men in hiding ready to take her place.

The world needs better X-Men.

Jennifer Lawrence may kick ass as Mystique but she can’t walk in high heels. The X-Men: Apocalypse star tripped and fell while collecting her first Oscar in 2013, and did the same on the red carpet in 2014. However, her work was not done. In 2015, she stumbled and fell at the Madrid premiere of one of those awful Hunger Games movies, and last night she nearly went tits up at the London premiere of X-Men Apocalypse.

The world can’t have their superheroes falling over their Christian Dior frocks. A new era of X-Men needs to emerge from the shadows and reveal themselves to the world and what better place to look than the poker industry.

Wynn finally bags city building permit for Boston Harbor project

Only one obstacle left before Steve Wynn can finally build his Boston Harbor project.

On Monday, city officials issued a building permit to casino operator Wynn Resorts for its proposed $2 billion casino development in Everett, the Boston Herald has reported. Mayor Carlo DeMaria called the permit “a major milestone” for the casino company, and “another positive step forward for Everett and beyond.”

There wasn’t a doubt that the city, which had been eagerly waiting for the project to proceed “for years,” will greenlight the casino development. But the permit also signifies that Wynn is all set to build the “24-story curved-glass hotel and vast casino,” provided that it clears the final regulatory huddle—Somerville Mayor Joseph Curtatone.

Early this year, the casino operator was forced to put on hold work on the site, including the removal of contaminants such as lead and arsenic on the long-condemned 33-acre site, after Curtatone filed an appeal questioning the environmental permit that Wynn Everett received from the Department of Environmental Protection.

GVC Should Enjoy Its 16-Month Grace Period

GVC reported earnings late last month and while they were quite positive on paper, once again the issue with GVC is not what the company emphasizes, but what it conceals through sleight of hand. Not in any illegal way of course – no accusations intended here – but GVC does have a way of putting crucial information on paper without bringing too much unwanted attention to it.

Before we get to that, CEO Kenny Alexander’s firm has been doing some things right. Right out of the gate, he has changed the bonus structure for Bwin.party’s executives to being performance-based rather than automatic. The term “bonus” is a bit misleading here though because it implies a salary above market rate for the job, which is not really what a bonus is. The final price for labor after all factors are accounted for is the market rate for the job, regardless of the nomenclature one may attach to different aspects of the price. Just like discounts are really a reflection of a lower market-clearing price for a good rather than an actual below-market price, bonuses are simply part of the market-clearing price for an executive in charge of a lot of capital. Simply put, if the number of buyers and sellers are equal, you are at the market price whether you call it a discount, a pay cut, a bonus or whatever.

Back when Bwin.party was being criticized for dishing out “bonuses” to an executive staff presiding over acute shareholder losses, the conundrum was that Bwin.party had to pay them because denying them would have made them look even worse. The real answer though is that the market sets the rate for high level executives, and failing to pay bonuses, which are part of the market price, means you are paying a below market rate for a job. And that means that labor migrates elsewhere. Losing your staff in the midst of turmoil is not ideal, so Bwin.party kept paying.

What GVC has done is not exactly “change culture” in Alexander’s words, but simply follow the supply and demand curve for executives. With the merger, the supply of executives at GVC/Bwin.party has gone up, and the demand to retain those executives has diminished because the combined company can now replace them more easily. Higher supply and lower demand means a lower price for the labor, and now the bonuses will be contingent on value creation, which if successful will up the market price. The test of whether GVC has hit the market price here is if Bwin.party execs start leaving the group. If they don’t, all that has happened is a new market clearing price. Either way, the move is a good one for the group.
