Bigger than Royal baby: Brexit wagers break record for non-sporting events in UK

The referendum that marked a historic time for Britain and Europe was a momentous event for punters too.

Brexit vote broke the record for gambling on non-sporting events in the UK—eclipsing even the widely popular Royal baby and previous elections in the country—with punters putting down an estimated £120 million ($159.43 million), the Financial Times reported.

Not all bookies, however, are celebrating Britain’s unexpected decision to exit the European Union.

If you recall, majority of bookies—which had been able to correctly guess two previous major UK political events—predicted last week that Britain will not leave the European Union, making the “remain” camp the odds-on favorite and shortening their odds to as much as 2/9 chance of victory.

Disgruntled Video Gamer Sues Valve Corporation Over Facilitation of Skin Betting

A resident of Connecticut has filed a lawsuit against the video gaming developer, Valve Corporation, alleging that they facilitated the growth of the multi-billion dollar skin betting industry.

Gary Lineker.

I don’t know if he plays Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (CS: GO), but in 1985, that man was the bane of my life.

There was a gaping hole in my Panini sticker book. Everton was the only side without a full lineup. Lineker was missing in action. The search for the England striker turned me into a desperado. It didn’t matter how many packets I bought he remained as elusive as a Tasmanian Tiger.

Nevada approves pari-mutuel DFS license for USFantasy

If two is company, will the recent entry of daily fantasy sports (DFS) provider US Fantasy in Nevada crowd the already limited market of DraftKings and Fanduel?

Nevada regulators have greenlit the Henderson-based US Fantasy’s bid to provide DFS in the Silver State last Thursday. USFantasy comes during the on-going legal battles of DrafKings and Fanduel – both stand accused in several states of operating as illegal, unregulated betting systems.

Unlike the two DFS giants, the Nevada Gaming Commission described USFantasy as a fair DFS model, different from a traditional DFS product, where clients pay an entry fee and pick a roster of players, usually under a “salary cap” format.

While it will still resemble fantasy sports, USFantasy will implement a pari-mutuel-style fantasy game wherein players can also place bets like they would in horse racing, with exactas (picking the top two players), trifectas (top three players) or daily doubles (picking winners of two contests).

Euro 2016 Review: Germany Are Favourites

Lee Davy explains why he still backs England to win Euro 2016 after Poland, Portugal, Wales, Belgium, Germany and France all booked passage into the quarterfinals.

Germany is the favourite to win Euro 2016 after beating the Slovakians in Lille on Sunday. It’s the first time the French have been ousted from the top spot in the betting markets since the qualifying round ended.

The World Champions struck gold when pitted against a Slovakian side defeated against the Welsh in the opening group game, followed by a convincing win against the Russians, before the bore draw against England.

Nothing in those three games suggested Slovakia would pose much of a threat against Germany, and that included Marek Hamšík – the Napoli star who is always spoken of so highly but has largely failed to deliver – his wonder goal against Russia aside.

WSOP Review: Second For Mateos; Third For Gathy; Kozlov Denies Kitai a Fourth

Belgian Michael Gathy has won his third World Series of Poker bracelet in a $5k Six-Handed event; Adrian Mateos has won his second bracelet in the Summer Solstice event, and Australian Martin Kozlov prevents Davidi Kitai winning his fourth bracelet in the $10k Six-Max No-Limit Hold’em.

Adrian Mateos has become the second Spaniard to win a bracelet this summer, after taking down the $1,500 No-Limit Hold’em Summer Solstice event.

Mateos joins Cesar Garcia as the second Spaniard to triumph at the 47th Annual World Series of Poker (WSOP) after topping a field of 1,840 entrants banking a $409,171 first prize. Only three Spaniards have ever won WSOP bracelets with Carlos Mortensen making up that triumvirate.

Mateos owns two WSOP bracelets, and his loved ones are yet to poke 22 candles into the icing – that happens sometime next week. His first came when he won the World Series of Poker Europe (WSOPE) Main Event in 2013 for €1m. His victory in the Season 11 European Poker Tour (EPT) Grand Final, where he won his second €1m first prize, means he is only a World Poker Tour (WPT) title away from a Triple Crown.
