2016 Poker Hall of Fame Nomination Process Begins as Does Annual Xenophobia Debate

World Series of Poker officials have officially opened the voting process for the 2016 Poker Hall of Fame, and that means the annual xenophobic debate begins in earnest.

The nomination process for the 2016 Poker Hall of Fame has started suggesting it’s time for non-American poker enthusiasts to start their annual complaint process regarding the lack of non-Americans handed the highest honour bestowed in poker.

The main cat calls generally come from European mouths. The Poker Hall of Fame has enshrined 50 members since Benny Binion created it in 1979 and none of them are of European descent.

Last year, cries of xenophobic attitudes reached fever pitch after the late Dave ‘Devilfish’ Ulliott missed out and American citizens John Juanda and Jennifer Harman got in.

Euro 2016: Spain Stunned by Croatia; Northern Ireland Qualify

The penultimate round of Euro 2016 group matches saw Northern Ireland scrape through to the qualifying stages despite a defeat at the hands of Germany, and Spain will face Italy in the Round of 16 after losing to Croatia.

Germany, Poland and plucky little Northern Ireland all qualify for the Round of 16 as the action in Group C grinds to a halt.

Northern Ireland knew that a point against the world champions would have been enough to send them through to the last 16, but Turkey’s 2-0 win against the Czech Republic means Michael O’Neill’s side make it nonetheless.

The knockout phase would have been a poorer place without the green and white army. Northern Ireland hasn’t set the world alight on the pitch, but their fans have been illuminating off it, and this tournament, more than any, needed fans who preferred singing over fighting.

Chinese city to promote cockfighting as tourism draw

China’s autonomous region of Xinjiang is banking on cockfighting to give its tourism industry a boost.

According to a recent report by China’s Xinhua news agency, officials in the city of Turpan are touting cockfighting as a way of making their city stand out from the others looking to lure the growing number of tourists visiting the autonomous region along China’s northwest border.

The region saw tourism revenue rise 15% last year and Turpan official Perhat Kadir says plans are underway to brand the city as the go-to source of cockfighting, “just like Spain is famous for bullfighting.”

Turpan is one of four Chinese cities that has an established reputation for cockfighting, and Turpan can trace its cockfighting tradition back nearly three centuries. Xinhua claimed around one-sixth of the city’s 600k residents relies directly or indirectly on the game-fowl trade.

Poll Arranged by Opposers to Online Poker in California Find That People in California Oppose Online Poker

Two days before politicians reconvene to discuss the future of Senator Adam Gray’s Californian online poker bill, a survey organised by the opposition reveals that 52% of those polled don’t want online poker in the state.

After Tony G offered to bet the United Kingdom Independence Party (UKIP) leader, Nigel Farage, £1m to prove that the United Kingdom would remain a part of the European Union (EU) in the wake of Thursday’s EU Referendum, the Lithuanian asserted that the odds lines are a more accurate indicator of public opinion than the polls.

If that’s the case, the online poker community will welcome some odds lines on online poker’s chances of emerging from the chrysalis as a fully regulated and licensed market in California.

We don’t have odds, but we do have polls, and a coalition of Californian American Indian Tribes who ardently oppose legalisation of online poker has financed the latest bit of data crunching.

New Zealand KFC worker wins $10.1m playing online slots at Casinoland

A New Zealand man has won over $10m playing an online slot, which will likely spur the government to accelerate plans to clamp down on international online gambling sites.

On Tuesday, Rawiri Pou (pictured left) attended a press conference at an Auckland hotel where he was presented with a giant novelty check for NZ $10,144,395.82 (US $7.2m) for winning the Mega Moolah progressive slots jackpot on Casinoland.com.

The 27-year-old Pou, who currently works for a Kentucky Fried Chicken in Matamata, said he originally won $1,500 playing the slot but decided to roll over his winnings, leading to the giant payday on June 17. A Casinoland spokesperson said the company was thrilled for Pou and promised that the “life-changing amount of money” would be in his bank account by Friday.

Pou says he has no plans to quit his KFC job, perhaps because he admitted that he still “doesn’t know what to feel” about his good fortune. That said, he did apparently feel a little smug about his parents having previously scolded him for wasting his money on gambling sites.

WSOP Results: Ortynskiy Wins First Russian Bracelet of The Summer

Russia has their first bracelet of the summer after Viatcheslav Ortynskiy defeated 580 entrants to win Event #30: $3,000 Six-Handed Pot-Limit Omaha; Daniel Alaei is in an excellent position to defend his title in Event #32: $10,000 Omaha Hi-Low Split-8 or Better, and more.

The Russians have their first gold bracelet of the summer after 34-year old Viatcheslav Ortynskiy defeated 580 entrants to win Event #30: $3,000 Six-Handed Pot-Limit Omaha. The event created $1,583,400 in prize money, 87 players finished ITM, and Ortynskiy picked up $344,327 for his win.

It was a sweet moment from the Krasnoyarsk native, after finishing third, fourth, and fifth in World Series of Poker (WSOP) events. Ortynskiy is a regular on the European Poker Tour (EPT) circuit, but his largest scores have come in the greatest festival of them all.

WSOP’s Nolan Dalla said that Ortinskiy ‘demolished’ the competition, and that’s some feat considering Randy Ohel had a seat in the final six. Ohel, who is having an outstanding WSOP, finished third. He has cashed four times this summer, and they have all been Top 10 ITM finishes with an 8th in the $1,500 Dealers Choice Six-Handed, 4th in the $10,000 Dealers Choice Six-Handed Championship, and 10th in the $10,000 H.O.R.S.E World Championship. He is also a former bracelet winner.
