Pechanga Survey Says 52 Percent of Californians Oppose Online Poker Regulation

The Pechanga coalition is determined to put the kibosh on California online poker, viewing it as a threat to the alliance’s land-based venues, much in the infamous Sheldon Adelson vein. To that end, the group commissioned a survey, and like many surveys, it was designed to elicit a particular response to support the group’s agenda. […]

Cowltiz tribe dubs its new Washington gaming venue the Ilani Casino Resort

The Cowltz Indian Tribe’s in-development casino in Washington state has finally been given a name: the Ilani Resort Casino.

Work began on the new $500m gaming venue in Clark County last September but the development – a collaboration with Connecticut’s Mohegan Tribal Gaming Authority (MTGA) – had operated under the less than glamorous title of the Cowlitz Casino Project.

On Monday, Cowlitz spiritual leader Tanna Engdahl explained that Ilani meant ‘sing’ in the Cowlitz language. Engdahl said the tribe “have always believed in the power of singing” and hoped the property’s guests “will find their ‘inner Ilani’ upon visiting out beautiful resort.”

The casino is scheduled to open in “late spring” 2017 with a 100k-square-foot gaming floor offering 2,500 slots, 75 gaming tables, 60 high-limit slots and five VIP tables. Non-gaming amenities will include a variety of lounges, restaurants and retail facilities, as well as a 2,500-seat multi-purpose room. A second phase including a hotel will follow in three or four years.

Hills in Anthony Joshua’s corner; Lads inks World Series of Darts title sponsorship

UK bookies William Hill have laid claim to a spot in the corner of IBF World Heavyweight Champion Anthony Joshua (pictured left).

On Monday, Hills announced it had signed a deal with promoter Matchroom Sport to serve as title sponsor of Joshua’s next three fights, starting with the undefeated Joshua’s first title defense against the equally undefeated Dominic Breazeale this Saturday (25) at the O2 Arena in London.

Hills and Joshua aren’t strangers, as Hills sponsored the boxer’s last two tilts, including his claiming of the IBF belt from incumbent Charles Martin this April. The new deal allows Hills’ brand to be visible in the ring, on ring posts and ropes, as well on media backdrops and promo material. No word on whether this includes Joshua’s spit bucket, but here’s hoping.

China sports lottery to rebound thanks to football, Olympics, online reboot

China’s sports lottery business is primed for a resurgence in 2016 after a tough 2015, according to market watchers.

China’s sports lottery sales are expected to surge over the next couple months, thanks to the Euro 2016 and Copa America football tournaments, as well as the upcoming Olympic Games in Rio.

The 2014 FIFA World Cup gave sports lottery numbers a significant boost but Everbright Securities analyst Jiang Hao suggested the European Championship and Copa America events would prove even more popular with Chinese sports lottery bettors, in part due to the ‘all-star’ makeup of the teams involved.

Jiang suggested June’s lottery numbers would show “a multiple yearly increase” over the same month last year, particularly in the match betting category. Match betting was already on a tear in 2016, posting year-on-year gains of 71% and 49% in March and April, respectively.
