Canada Supreme Court ruling casts more doubt on Quebec’s IP-blocking plans

Canada’s Supreme Court has handed down a telecommunications ruling that throws further doubt on Quebec’s plans to block the domains of online gambling sites the province doesn’t like.

On Thursday, the Court unanimously ruled that a Quebec municipality couldn’t block telecom provider Rogers Communications from installing a new cell tower at a particular address.

Rogers had sought and received permission from a federal department to put a cell tower on land it was leasing in Châteauguay, a suburb of Montreal. Rogers said the tower was necessary to improve the quality of its local service.

Châteauguay had expressed opposition to Rogers’ plan due to (a) the tower being “visually disagreeable” and (b) alleged fears regarding potential threats the tower posed to local residents’ health and safety. When that gambit failed, the city rezoned the property as a “land reserve” that put the kibosh on Rogers’ plans.

South Africa’s casino operators protest gov’t decision to issue new license

South Africa’s casino operators are planning legal action to block the government’s plan to issue a new casino license.

Minister of Trade and Industry Dr. Rob Davies recently announced that the government would issue a new casino license in the North West province, the first time that the number of casinos has increased since the country legalized gambling in 1995.

Davies said the National Gambling Policy Council had justified the new venue because recent changes to municipal demarcations meant the North West’s Morula Sun Casino – a Sun International property – was now in neighboring Gauteng.

Davies also argued that, while the Gambling Review Commission had concluded in 2009 that 40 was indeed an appropriate number of casinos, the National Gambling Act “does empower consideration to increase the limit” should the government decide expansion was desirable.

Dafabet ink two-year Burnley FC shirt deal; Marathonbet rethinking Liverpool ties?

Asian-facing online gambling operator Dafabet has inked a shirt sponsorship with English Premier League side Burnley FC.

On Wednesday, Dafabet announced it had inked a two-year “record, multi-million pound deal” to get its name on Burnley’s home and away kit. In addition to the newly promoted Burnley, Dafabet also has a deal with EPL side Sunderland and last month added a long-term deal with Scotland’s Celtic FC.

Burnley had previously been sponsored by Asian-facing operator Fun88 but Burnley’s head of commercial affairs Anthony Fairdough said Dafabet’s “proven track record” with the EPL had helped the operator to beat out “many different companies of stature all over the world.”

Dafabet’s sponsorship guru John Cruces called Burnley “deserving winners” of last season’s Champitonship and he hoped the club would continue that momentum into the upcoming EPL campaign. The new home kit will be unveiled on June 24 and will go on sale on July 9.
